About this property
Elegant apartment, WIFI, dining terrace, 2 bath, Bagni di Lucca
The Piazza Apartment is an independent apartment located upstairs in Casa Tolomei, which is a beautiful and well-known villa in Bagni di Lucca, Tuscany.
The apartment takes up a whole upstairs wing of the villa and comprises 2 to 3 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms (one of which is an en-suite with a luxuriously large bathtub), a modern fitted kitchen with lovely large, adjoining terrace shaded by the roof, a snug living room, and a balcony at the front of the house. Free Wifi internet throughout.
The rooms are high-ceilinged and bright, and most have antique frescoes on walls or ceilings.
Guests have shared use of the lovely walled garden of the villa.
The apartment is on the first upstairs floor of the villa and is reached via a shared stairway from the garden.
The kitchen has all new appliances including an electric oven, dishwasher, fridge, microwave, etc. It has very large glass doors opening onto the generous terrace, which is surrounded by wisteria and ideal for al-fresco dining. Alternatively there's a large gazebo in the garden with a picnic table.
Casa Tolomei is a stunning historic villa located in the centre of the famous spa town of Bagni di Lucca, steps away from restaurants, cafes, shops, supermarkets and banks. No need to take the car every time you need to buy something, or to dine out - everything is right here. Even so, you will feel hidden away from the world in the magical walled garden with mature palm trees and (in summer) the pool .
It's also a perfect starting point for trips to nearby cities such as Lucca, Pisa, Florence, or Viareggio and its beaches.
In the immediate vicinity of the house one can find nature walks (including the Poets Walk along the river, accessed via steps across the road from the house, and a circuit through the woods which can include the thermal baths at Bagni Caldi) and all services such as restaurants, banks and supermarkets. Nearby there are stunning villages nestled among the hills and mountains, the Canyon Park (a well-known adventure park), and a famous ski resort - Abetone. The walled historic centre of Lucca is not to be missed.
The English poets Robert & Elizabeth Barrett-Browning were summer residents here during the 1850s, writing many letters and working on their poetry. Later, in the early 1900s, composer Giacomo Puccini was a regular guest as he was a close friend of the owner of the house at that time.
The front facade of the villa is famously decorated with Liberty (Art Nouveau) period frescoes, while the garden facade has the classical period design dating from the 1700-1800s. Inside, several rooms exhibit original antique frescoes, including the stunning grand sala which is entirely covered in frescoes.

About the host
Hosted by Laura & Andy at Casa Tolomei

We live in an independent apartment on the ground floor of the villa, together with our three young children, and we're usually available if you need help or advice. Andy is English and Laura is an Italian language teacher who can give private lessons. We speak Italian, English, German, and Spanish.
Why they chose this property
Casa Tolomei is a very special villa, known to everyone in the area. A surprising number of the elder local population seem to have grown up playing inside the house or in the garden. We found the house in a woeful condition and have spent almost 4 years performing a sympathetic restoration, retaining all historic features including ancient tile floors, frescoes, original doors and windows, and so on.
The house is internationally known because the English poets Robert & Elizabeth Barret-Browning were summer residents here in the 1850's and wrote many surviving letters from this address, while working on their poetry. The house contains much reference material concerning the visits of the poets.
Furthermore, the world renowned composer Giacomo Puccini was a regular guest as he was the lifelong best friend of the villa's owner Adriano Bastiani. Puccini is known to have slept here in one of guest bedrooms, played piano in the frescoed sala (sadly the piano is no longer there), and played with the children of the family in the garden after arriving in his motor car, of which he was one of the earliest proponents.

What makes this property unique
Staying here is an experience in itself. It's an original noble Tuscan villa which allows guests to step back in time and experience the dolce vita lifestyle in original surroundings.
Wonderful frescoes adorn the inside and outside of the house - the main facade of the house has had its early Liberty (Art Nouveau) period frescoes uncovered and retouched during the recent restoration, and several rooms have frescoes on walls and/or ceilngs.
The house is located in the historic town centre of Bagni di Lucca, a few steps from the Tourist office, with a lovely cafe a few doors away on one side (serving their freshly made pastries and other treats) and a well-known restaurant virtually next door on the other side. Banks, the bookshop, the newsagent, bars, all the well-known restaurants, the Irish Pub, and supermarkets are all within a few metres.
Despite the convenient location, guests will find the split-level garden to be a tranquil and private spot, and from here one can admire the impressive garden monument, the mature palm trees and the neo-classical facade of this side of the Villa which incorporates the original window decorations. In summer there is a pool (5.5 m x 3 m, depth 1.2m) plus tables, chairs and umbrellas.
In the immediate vicinity of the house one can find nature walks (including the Poets Walk along the river, accessed via steps across the road from the house) and all services such as restaurants, banks and supermarkets. In the locality there are adventure opportunities such as kayaking, horse-riding and the Canyon Adventure Park.
