THE NEIGHBORHOOD
Puerto Vallarta is located on Mexico's Pacific Coast. The town sits at the bottom of the mountains at the midway of one of the world's largest bays - the "Bahia de Banderas" or "Bay of Flags" in English. To the east of the city, the high mountains that comprise of the Sierra Madre, they protect to the bay of winds and serve like moderators of the climate that is semitropical and humid.
In the 1960s, Puerto Vallarta was a small fishing village of about 10,000 residents. The town became world famous in 1964 when Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton stayed there during the filming of Tennessee Williams's "Night of the Iguana”. Today, Puerto Vallarta has about 300,000 residents and is one of the world's top resort towns.
OLAS ALTAS
Olas Altas is a wonderful side-walk café strewn strip of land where the mountains are closest to the beach, is where everyone walks. Olas Altas has become something reminiscent of a Paris back street, lined with sidewalk cafés, but located in the tropics here in Puerto Vallarta. Along Olas Altas Street are several various restaurants and bars. All are the kind of places where you'll see activity earlier in the evening.
LOS MUERTOS BEACH
Los Muertos is located on the southside of Puerto Vallarta and is the busiest beach area in Vallarta, and one section of it is very gay: around the beach concession commonly known as Blue Chairs. Spread out under the Palapas (umbrellas) and spend the day enjoying the sun and the scenery.
NIGHTLIFE
The night clubs start to come alive after 11 PM and things really start popping later, usually after 2 AM. Most of the night life is based on Lazaro Cardenas including the very popular La Noche, and the earlier evening action is at Olas Altas.
MALECON (BOARDWALK)
Puerto Vallarta locals and visitors alike enjoy people watching on El Malecon, the city’s iconic boardwalk overlooking the Bay of Banderas. It’s the place for sunsets strolls, rollerblading, ice creams and admiring the many public street sculptures.
MARIETAS ISLAND
Situated in a sort of open sun-drenched crater, this beach is affectionately nicknamed the "hidden beach" or "beach of love" (Playa del Amor). You'll have the opportunity to discover the wonders of nature while watching dolphins, whales, giant manta rays, sea turtles and tropical fish, all in their natural environment! Complete with bird watching, swimming, snorkeling, scuba diving and kayaking in the warm waters that surround the Marietas Islands.
SAYULITA
The village of Sayulita is nestled in a gentle, palm tree-lined bay about one hour north of Puerto Vallarta. A cultural blend of beaches, shops, restaurants, activities and smiling people make Sayulita the perfect destination for an "off-the-beaten-path" Mexican vacation. It offers visitors and residents incredible beaches, lush jungles and a taste of rural Mexico. With cobblestone streets hosting dogs, chickens and playing children, Sayulita is a half-century away from nearby Puerto Vallarta.
