About this property

Private Island with a hand scribbed log cabin on beautiful Burntside Lake

Stay on your own 2 1/4 acre private island on beautiful Burntside Lake near Ely, Minnesota. One of the country's most beautiful lakes, studded with approx. 125 islands and ringed with coves and bays. Water sports paradise: swimming, snorkeling, canoeing, boating and fishing. A deep water lake of over 7000 acres. Fishing centers around Walleye, Northern Pike, Smallmouth Bass & Lake trout. Lake Trout & Walleye have been stocked by the DNR for decades and there is a healthy population of each.

The cabin is hand scribed logs from the Isabella area and constructed in 1984. (the outhouse is also constructed of hand scribed logs). The main level has one bedroom, kitchen, dining area, 'bathroom' consisting of a small vanity and shower, and the main living area with a wood burning stove. The area above the living area is open to the vaulted ceiling. The loft is open to the living area and has a double and single bed.

The island was 'spared' from logging in the early 1900's due to size, therefore we have first growth red pines. BEAUTIFUL!

Watch & listen to loons and ducks swim by. View sunrises and sunsets from one of the three decks. If you're lucky, you can view Aurora Boreallis from the dock.

We have an outdoor firepit for campfires or cookouts.

Bring your own boat and motor or contact us for options.

Ideal Northern Minnesota getaway
This is the cabin I've been looking for the past 10+ years! It's private/secluded but not too remote; it's rustic but has everything you need; and it's located on one of the most beautiful lakes in Minnesota. Our family thoroughly enjoyed our stay and will be returning next year!

Most beautiful place!!
Everything about this property is amazing. The location of the island is close to the boat ramp and an unlimited number of places to explore. The cabin is beautiful and so very cozy! This was our second year there and we have booked next year.

The perfect Up North MN experience
Our family has stayed at Pork Chop Island several times throughout the years; it is a true Northern MN woods experience on the edge of the Boundary Waters. The cabin has a rustic feel, however, modern conveniences are provided such as a full kitchen, electricity, and hot water for dishes and showers. Clean linens and towels are provided as well. The cabin has a television and radio too, however, we choose to "unplug" and enjoy the secluded surroundings. Staying on a private island is special, rarely is anyone heard from the shoreline. Watching the hummingbirds fight over the feeder from the kitchen window during the day and listening to the loons call to each other at night are our highlights. With little light pollution, you can see the Milkyway and complete constellations at night. The lake is large and clear; a great lake for fishing. There are not many noisy boats buzzing by to disturb the serenity of the island. The lake is a short drive to Ely which has a grocery store for any forgotten supplies. Ely also has a bait shop, several boutiques, and restaurants that make for a great day trip. Pork Chop Island provides the perfect Northern MN experience with memories that will last a lifetime.

Your own private island on one of Minnesota's most beautiful lakes!
We had a very nice time here. We have friends that also have a cabin on an island on Burntside Lake, so we were familiar in general with the lake. It's gorgeous -- if you close your eyes and think about the "land of sky blue waters", this is the place. (In fact, this lake and Pork Chop Island were featured in many of the print ads for Hamm's Beer way back when...) The cabin was very comfortable and cozy. The wood stove provided plenty of warmth on the chilly September nights, and the beds were comfy. Being in the wilderness and still having access to hot showers, a gas stove/oven, and plenty of places to sit and read made it a luxurious alternative to camping. We also brought our 2 basset hounds, and it was fun to let them roam around without worrying about them getting lost. (And yes, we picked up after them - as should everyone considering visiting this special place with a dog). Would definitely like to go back - next time we might try a little earlier in the season, but you really can't go wrong with this property or lake. Oh, one last thing: we rented a pontoon from Lady Bug Lodge and that worked out very nice. We called and they met us at the landing with the boat -- they handled putting it in and taking it out. We just had to hop in and boat over to the island which wasn't too far from the landing.

Beuatiful Cabin and location on Burntside Lake
Our Family had a terrific time staying on this very private island and beautiful cabin. It was great for the dogs as well as you really don't have to worry about them running off because the Island is a perfect size. Great swimming area on the island and directly across from the island. I would highly recommend to anyone looking to stay on a n island on the most beautiful lake in all of Minnesota.

Nobody could ask for better hosts. We were hesitant to do a review, because we don’t want to share this gym in the wilderness. Our first day there we reserved a week for next year. The cabin is stocked with anything and everything you could ever want for a week, the bed and pillows were amazing, and the island itself fabulous. We caught fish on every fishing trip, and fishing off the dock I cut 19 fish and 20 Casts. We are so blessed that the owners of this island and Cabin are willing to share their paradise with others.

What's not to like about a genuine, hand built log cabin on Burntside lake? Good owners. Well kept. Beautiful surroundings. Don't book this property. We don't want to see more "flat landers" in paradise.

Mixed feelings ...
I mean about telling anybody about this wonderful place. It's everything you could possibly dream of in a wilderness vacation ... Burntside Lake, the wonderful cabin. But alas, we have our wonderful week booked 'til eternity (or at least until the Hilpert's decide not to rent it out anymore) so sharing this piece of valuable information is truly a gift to anyone who heeds my advice.

Great stay at Hilpert's Hideaway
We had a wonderful week at the end of August, 2012, on Pork Chop Island. Burntside Lake is beautiful, clean, undeveloped, and full of little, rocky islands like Pork Chop Island. The cabin was extremely comfortable and very much in keeping with its surroundings. It was clean and fully stocked with all the equipment we needed to cook up a storm. While the outhouse was no one’s favorite place there is a great shower indoors so we were happy. If anything, the cabin and island are even nicer than pictured on the website. The owner and property manager were very easy to work with and great at answering any questions we had. There were no notes with lists of "don't" s that you sometimes see. It felt like we were staying at a friend’s home that we would take care of and respect, not a rental property, which was very nice. The pictures can’t convey the fresh air and the sounds of nature we enjoyed. It is difficult to find a place these days where you can’t hear a lot of man made sounds; neighbors, traffic and airplanes. We loved sitting outside at night and hearing only the crickets and loons and seeing no lights from other cabins. We saw a few boats, heard the occasional voice from across the lake, but it was very unobtrusive. All this while still having running water, electricity, and window screens. There is a TV but we decided to pretend it wasn’t there so didn’t turn it on. It was wonderful being able to turn an eleven year old girl and a dog loose in the morning and not having to worry about either of them, knowing they could wander and daydream all they wanted and not get into too much trouble. Unfortunately, there aren’t many places you can do that.

Fantastic Family Vacation on Private Island!!
Unforgettable vacation!! The privacy of the island combined with the beauty of Burntside Lake made this a truly memorable vacation for the entire family. The private dock provided all the kids with easy access to fishing and the beach area provided easy access to swim and cool off during a hot day. The entire cabin was very clean and amply supplied with all of the cooking utensils and kitchen items that you need to prepare family dinners at the end of the day. We fished around the island and across the lake on both banks using the canoes provided and caught plenty of fish to have a big fish fry before our departure. We also rented the Lund fishing boat and were able to fish many different areas of the lake including a trip up the Dead River to the Twin Lakes. The Bald Eagles were plentiful and the Loon's are always a treat. We even found 2 separate Falcon/Hawk (will need to look at the pictures to properly identigy) nests that we were able to photograph and observe. The owners were wonderful hosts and very friendly to work with leading up to our vacation answering all of our questions and providing additional lake and local history information. The staff were professional, courteous and prompt in their pick up, drop off and assistance in getting us to an from the island. We can't say enough good things about our vacation and we are planning on making the trip to Pork Chop Island an annual family vacation! Thanks again for a truly amazing week of rest, relaxation and family time on Pork Chop Island and we look forward to our trip next year!

Great Family Vacation
The listing and photos did not do this wonderful island justice. THe place is amazing. Our family had the most amazing time. The cabin was clean and decorated wonderfully. The communication between the owner and us and also the guide that welcomes you to the island was fantastic. The cabin had all the amentities that anyone would need. Watching the sunrise and sunset, listening to the loons, exploring the island, and the amazing burntside lake was fantastic. I would recommend this cabin to anyone. My daughter was 2 1/2 and she had the most amazing time boating, swimming at the beach on the island, canoeing, and also having campfires. Spending a week at a cabin on an island was amazing. The public dock was not too far away, so if you do want to go into Ely for the day it isn't trouble at all. Seeing and staying on Burntside Lake needs to be on everyone's vacation list.

August 7, 2009 Our Vacat...
August 7, 2009 Our Vacation was such a welcome respite before the end of sommer. Interestingly, our kids didn't even ask about the TV. (we told them it did't work last year). We found an extraordinary patch of blueberries, picked a couple of hours and left a million more for the next pickers. We enjoyed fabulous pancakes and muffins for the next few days. Our days would usually end with a twilight canoe paddle listening to the Loon's evening calls. Can't wait to return next season.

We had the pleasure of va...
We had the pleasure of vacationing at Pork Chop Island back in 2009 and will be back in 2010. Having the luxury of your very own private island is unexplainable! The kids (5 & 7) woke up, came down for their "fort" (the loft), grabbed a granola bar and put on their life vests and headed for the lake. They experienced nature at it's finest. Fishing was thier priority but also managed to swim from the dock and beach area as well as other locations around the island. One fish after another and a few that were very respectable were caught all day long. This allowed my wife and I to sit on the dock, deck or in the adirondak chairs, chat, connect and supervise from afar. The water is crystal clear and to quote the kids, "REFRESHING". At night, we enjoyed a camp fire outside and roasted hot dogs and smores. No problem getting the kids to sleep after a full day of sun, swimming and fresh air. We were surprised to still have light on the lake at 10pm. What a great place to make memories that will be cherished forever. Of all the vacations we have taken, the kids still talk the most about Pork Chop Island and are anxious to get back. What a lovely retreat from the hustle and bustle of life. Thank you for sharing your treasure with us. See you later this year. The Jake Malone family Barrington, Illinois

Porkchop Island is an amazing place! Fish, waterski, swim or just relax on the deck with a book and listen to the loons. The cabin is rustic, but with all the conveniences of home. The woodburning stove keeps the cabin cozy on cool summer nights, as does the outdoor fire pit. Burntside Lake is has to be one of the most beautiful lakes in MN. We can't wait to go back! Burntside Lake is a beaut...
Burntside Lake is a beautiful Lake. The cabin was perfect for our family. The boys enjoyed sleeping in the loft. Swimming was the favorite. The water was so clear, not a weed. The boys loved fishing off the dock. Tommy caught a fish every time his hook hit the water. Dan reeled in a 25 inch walleye. We can't wait to come back next year.

My sisters & I had the blessing of "growing up" on the island since our parents purchased it & ultimately had the log cabin built. This was not our residence rather a retreat from the city. Now our children (6 combined & all adults) have also "grown-up" on the island. My wife Carolyn & I along with our adults kids Olivia & Andrew reside in the NW suburbs of Chicago. We are very fortunate in that we can spend a fair bit of our time at the island during all 4 fantastic Minnesota seasons & are excited to be sharing our slice of heaven with you all.

Why they chose this property

Our parents fell in love with Burntside Lake on our first family vacation on the lake.
Shortly thereafter they learned of this undeveloped island for sale. Our father had a childhood dream of someday owning a log cabin. Together with our mother that dream was realized & on a private island to boot.

What makes this property unique

We love having the entire island to ourselves. It is so quiet & peaceful. The lake is one of the clearest & cleanest in the state. Boat activity is drastically less than lakes in all of Minnesota.
We can view both sunrises and sunsets from one of the decks which also has a 360 degree view of the pristine waters of the Majestic Burntside lake.
