About this property

100yr Old Log Cabin On Autrain River Near Pictured Rocks And Lake Superior

Conveniently located in the heart of the upper peninsula just minutes from Pictured Rocks, Lake Superior, dozens of waterfalls and endless outdoor activities and adventures. AuTrain River Cottages are located in a private association that is quiet and beautiful. There is about a 100 yards of river frontage to enjoy and relax next to. Cottages are pet friendly and range from one bedroom to 4 bedrooms and can accommodate from one to 8 guests. Each Cottage has all amenities included like WiFi, towels, linens, blankets, pillows and cooking supplies. There is a fire-pit area for guests to enjoy a fire w/a view of the river and wood can be purchased locally. Also included is a gas grill w/propane, and one free standard kayak rental from Da Ya Shak. Launching of the canoe is on site and shuttle service is available. Additional kayaks are available for rent. A fishing boat w/motor are available to you on site for a discounted rate. Mooring your own boat is a possibility, contact me for details.

DA Spruce is a bigger one bedroom Log Cabin. The original part of the cabin is nearly 100 years old and was added on to in the 50's. The old logs are still in tact and make for a very authentic feel inside. This place is perfect for a couple, or a small family. The kitchen is fully stocked and has a dining table for 4. There is A/C, WiFi, and a 42" TV with cable. There is a queen in the bedroom and two futons in the living room, with plenty of room to move around. Cabin could easily accommodate 4 adults. New in 2017, a large bathroom was installed with a 36" shower stall and adjoining closet area for guests luggage and gear. 2016 was it's first rental season in 25 years, and since people couldn't have been happier. If you want to step back in time but have modern amenities available, this is your place!

The AuTrain River provides excellent swimming, and canoeing/kayaking as it winds 12 miles through the Hiawatha National Forest. Further down river puts you into Lake Superior and quite possibly the best beach on all of Lake Superior. Up river is the beautiful AuTrain Lake which provides a wonderful place to enjoy water sports, fishing or just a relaxing cruise. Bass, Walleye or Pike are your most commonly fished.

Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore located in Munising is only 15 minutes away and there are over a dozen waterfalls within a 30 mile radius. The National Lakeshore provides days worth of outdoor activities. If you are into fishing, Trout and Salmon are the most commonly fished in Lake Superior.

I have seen nearly everything in this area and am a great resource during your stay. I will meet with you after you arrive and give you advice about the area and things you can enjoy during your vacation.

100 year old cabin

The listing for this cabin is accurate. It is a 100 year old cabin, but it is very functional and comfortable for 2 people to stay. From where the cabin is located it is very easy to access the Au Train river or go to Munising or Marquette for activities or restaurants. There are also plenty of hiking or biking trails in the area. We will definitely be coming back to this area.

A Place to enjoy the UP

Close to all the attractions on the UP! Host had a fantastic notebook with suggestions and links to all there is to do. The place was as shown...not the palace, but a throwback to simpler times when a cabin was a cabin! We enjoyed our stay...comfy bed, hot water, and the inside of the cabin was well-cleaned.

Log Cabin Lounging

This very quaint log cabin is exactly as you see in the pictures. It gets very cold in the fall/winter, so bring extra layers and blankets. The gas fire place can be a bit tricky to get the right temperature. There are plenty of kitchen utensils to use including pots, pans, and dishware. The cabin is located in a convenient location near the lakeshore, a small store, and plenty of trails. The cabin sits in a quiet and secluded neighborhood. Cell service was not great, but there was strong wi-fi.

Rustic cabin but comfortable. The location is on the river as well as close to the lake and nearby attractions. For the price, it was well worth it.

Quiet Getaway Stay in Great Location

This small but quaint cabin had everything we needed for our 3 night stay. It was very quiet at night! Loved being in AuTrain. This was a great place to stay that allowed us to take day trips to Grand Marais and Munising, and to explore the surrounding area.

Au train river cabin

Perfect place for a small group of friends or family! Right off of the au train river which is perfect for kayaking or snorkeling and a good halfway point between Marquette and Munising. Great place to stay if your looking to do hiking around the area and an absolutely beautiful location!

Cabin with good location

Great spot for sightseeing. It was pretty cold when we stayed and the propane heater was nice but didn’t feel comfortable sleeping with it on so there were some COLD mornings until it warmed up again. Netflix didn’t work due to the sharing changing nationally that weekend. Small but good for two!

A cozy cabin

My wife and I reserved this location for our anniversary and ended up having to bring our two young children. It was just the right size for us, because we didn't spent much time in the cabin. I think this location would be ideal for two people, but it can sleep more; I wouldn't say comfortably though. The cabin was clean and had a positive ambiance. I could tell the owners put deliberate TLC into improving the cabin. The facilities worked well, and the internet was a lot better than expected. The area it is in was a little bit busy with other cabins, but we rarely saw other people. It's about a 10-15 minute drive from Munising and it was really easy to find even after dark. I'd recommend going here and would consider it again in the future. Maybe next time without the kids. 😁

Picture Rocks trip

The pictures of the cabin are spot on. Lots of storage for your stuff. There wasn’t a view of river from this cabin but a short walk. The campfire site by the river is community but really feels like it belongs to sites on the river. We were about 30 min from Munising. Nice scenic drive plenty of road side spots to stop and dip your toes into the lake. We took advantage of canoeing down Autrain river. But be advised the yak shack doesn’t honor the free kayak or canoe as advertised in listing. After long conversation they did give us a 25.00 credit towards a canoe ( so we paid 20). Definitely worth it. It’s a slow winding river. Lots of spots to stop and have lunch. Will definitely consider coming back. But getting a cabin closer to the water.

Not what we wanted

We were not happy with our cabin. The bed and pillows were very uncomfortable, as was the furniture. The cabin was too rustic and small. We were not able to contact anyone, and we got a hotel.

Cute little cabin! Perfect for one or two people, but I don’t think I’d try to fit any more than that! A bit out of the way, but not far off a drive into Munising, an hour from Marquette, 30-60 minutes from Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore, depending on what end you start exploring from. Only issues I had with the property were that the coffee maker needed to be cleaned well before I made coffee (bugs floating on top of the water once the reservoir was filled) and the cloth futon really needs a cover (you could feel the dirt and grime on the cloth as soon as you touched it!). Other than that, it was an adorable little place, nice and quiet and private.

The rental was exactly what we thought it would be. It was clean, quite, and perfect.

The location to Pictured Rock is perfect. There was internet and Netflix. It was surrounded by other cabins but it felt secluded and private. We tired to fish but didn't catch anything. The price was better than a hotel.

About the host

Plain and simply, I am a Yooper. I live locally year round and am a wealth of knowledge when it comes to exploring our area. I graduated high school and college here and I am an avid outdoors-man, I camp, hike, bike, kayak, ski, snowshoe, ATV, motorcycle, snowmobile and Jeep nearly the entire U.P. and if you have heard of it, chances are I've been there, or done that. I also know some places 'slightly off the radar' if you are looking to get away from the tourist areas. Just ask, I'll be happy to give you advice.

Why they chose this property

I was a transplant to this area during high school years ago and left then came back. I couldn't stay away forever, this area is unlike any other. Sure there are beautiful places all over the country, but no matter where you are from, this place is special beyond words... This cottage is part of a private association with it's own river frontage. The property has a beautiful view, clean water with sandy bottom and plenty of space to relax. There are 10 cottages on this property (it was an old resort) I own/manage 7 of them for vacation rentals. I purchased these cottages with the intention of providing people a great place to stay, and the opportunity to enjoy our beautiful area. Overall, if someone doesn't enjoy staying here, it would be a first.

What makes this property unique

It is within 2 minutes of Lake Superior, one of the best beaches in all of Michigan, 15 minutes from Munising and the Pictured Rocks, dozens of waterfalls, hundreds of miles of hiking trails, biking trails and ATV/snowmobiling trails.(all available right from the cottage doorstep). AuTrain lake is accessible by boat right from the cottages and has tons of recreational opportunities.
