About this property

Lake James Historic Couple's Retreat 10 mins from Lake James, on Wine Circuit

This historic farmhouse is located in a picturesque country setting. Minimum rental period is 3 months. The location is on the winery circuit next door to South Creek Winery, and about 10 minutes or so from Silver Fork Winery. The home was built in the early 1900's from wood obtained from this farm tract. There was a civil war era cabin at the current home location where Daniel's great-grandparents, Adolphus Rowe & Annie Rowe Simmons, lived and some of the floor joists were kept and utilized when the home was built. Adolphus is the oval picture closest to the master bedroom and we are looking for a good picture of Annie Simmons. Daniel's granddad married his grandmother Anna Bowman, and her dad, Daniel's great grandfather Sam Bowman, is the oval picture to the left of the Adolphus picture. Anna Bowman is seen in a picture holding Daniel at the top of the steps. Daniel's 2nd cousin, Lewis Guy Flack, is in a picture on the fireplace mantle. He was the first casualty/death during WW2 from McDowell County. Daniel's uncle cline is the framed portrait picture in the living room. He is also seen in the master bedroom in the iconic picture with Dwight Eisenhower, soldier standing to the far right with a pack on his front, prior to the D-Day invasion. Daniel's grandfather, who was also named Daniel, lived in this home and told the story of troops coming through the area during the Civil War. Most of the community relayed this from one household to the next and word spread that troops were coming, so many of the household community were prepared. Troops were looking for food and valuables. Adolphus was in the war at the time so his wife, Annie Simmons Rowe and a farmhand, hid the livestock to keep it from being confiscated. Daniel's grandfather told him that the milk cow and other livestock were taken to a rock shelving/cave back through the woods and were not found by the troops. We have relatives that fought for both sides during the Civil War, hence the saying, "Brother Against Brother". Our family has an extensive military history and there are pictures in the home reflecting this. The home was first renovated after World War II when Daniel's dad and brothers came back from the War. They enclosed the rear porch and kitchen area to make it part of the home. The kitchen was detached from the home kitchen prior to that. The Sears & Roebuck cook/woodstove is still in the kitchen and this was used by Daniel's grandmother. You can see the lap siding in the laundry room that was on the outside porch before the renovation. The front gable, brick columns, and indoor plumbing were added at that time as well. The hardwood flooring throughout the home was installed and came from wood cut from the farm. Daniel & Ellen who are the owners, also worked on the home for several years recently and modernized it to some degree. There is central heat and air, dish TV, and Wi-Fi and the end goal was to add some modern conveniences, but keep it rustic as well. You will love it here if you love what we have described. This is one of 3-homes on approximately 100 acres. The home is about 10-minutes from beautiful Lake James and I-40 and about 35 minutes from the eastern part of Asheville. The home offers beautiful views, a peaceful country setting, comfort and roominess. The home rents for $2400/month. Friendly, house trained dogs are allowed but no cats due to owner allergies. All dogs must be leash walked. Puppies are not allowed. The main thing is to come and have a fun time!

Relaxing Retreat

This was a comfortable and relaxing getaway spot. It is exactly as described in the listing and was very clean. We are history buffs and really enjoyed looking at all the antiques and family photos on display. It was very convenient for our kayaking trip on Lake James and we enjoyed the winery next door and a nearby brewery. Our dogs had a great time too! We definitely want to return for a longer visit!

History and a Peaceful Rest

My husband and I stayed with our 2 dogs for the weekend, I wish the trip was longer. The house had so much history and the shower and bed were great! Very nice place to stay! The views were amazing and the sunrise was gorgeous. The yard was great for the dogs and the driveway was a nice walk. Close to Lake James, where we kayaked all day for a fishing tournament. Close to Marion where we hiked to Toms Creek Falls *dogs allowed*. Great vacation!

The Run-away

What a great place to run away to get away from it all. I was able to work remotely for my work with the available WiFi while I sat on the front porch enjoying the gorgeous view of the hills. The host and hostess was very responsive. It is a place to come back to,

Serene haven

This was our second stay at this gorgeous rural farm setting. We walked next door to the winery, but otherwise stayed put and got some much-needed respite from our work. Due to the pandemic we’ve not been anywhere but work, grocery store, or home for six months, and this felt like a safe haven, especially because we brought all of our own food along.

Perfect place to unwind

This property is amazing. The historic house is beautiful and takes you back to a simpler time but still has modern conveniences. Private location with beautiful scenery. The hosts are next door if you need anything yet they are very discreet. Comfortable beds and the ping pong table was a welcome bonus. Lake James is gorgeous and serene. We wanted to get away from the hustle and bustle and this trip did not disappoint. We would definitely return!

Christmas Visit

We visited family that live in the area for Christmas. This home met all of our needs. It is roomy enough for a small family and the surrounding property is quiet and peaceful. You will catch deer hanging on the property nearly everyday. The house is clean and has virtually everything you need to make your stay a comfortable one. If you like to hike, the woods behind the property offer some beautiful scenery. Daniel and Ellen are great hosts and make sure you have everything you need. This is our second stay on the property and we would come back for sure.

So Peaceful and Quiet

This was such a great place to unwind after a busy work week. We were able to rent it on a day's notice, and drive up after work on a Friday evening. The house sets back off the road down a long gravel lane. It's an old two story farmhouse that is actually the owner's homeplace, and it's furnished with lovely old furniture and antiques. It was also quite comfortable with individual climate control in each room. We spent most of the weekend just relaxing at the house, but we did go out to eat a couple of times. I have celiac disease, and we were able to find several restaurants nearby with great gluten-free options. We also visited the winery next door and enjoyed talking with the owner and listening to the band. Each morning we'd sit outside and have coffee, and watch the deer and turkeys. The deer would come up quite close and seemed to enjoy watching us as much as we enjoyed watching them! We hated to go home when Sunday rolled around, but we look forward to visiting again!

A really special place!

We had an extended stay here while building our house in Morganton. The house sits on 100 acres in a quiet area of Nebo, and while you feel like you are way out in the country, the interstate is minutes away giving easy access to nearby attractions such as wineries and Lake James. Morganton, with a variety of restaurant options, is about 15 minutes away. There is a 1/2 mile drive from the main road to the house which cuts through two huge fields of the property. A "resident" herd of about 15 deer wander through the fields early morning and in the evening. The owners, Daniel and Ellen, are a wonderful couple who live close by and are responsive to any needs you may have while respecting your privacy. Their number one concern is for you to be comfortable-and you will be! Upon our arrival, we were welcomed with a vase of fresh flowers, chocolates, and a bottle of wine from a nearby winery with a lovely note that included a history of the house. A very nice touch! This is a very charming house. It is rustic, but very nicely appointed with period furniture. We found it to be impeccably clean. The kitchen is rather small but fully equipped and there is a nice dining table and chairs. A new Weber grill is available for use on the front porch. The one bathroom is in the middle of the house and not attached to the bedroom on the main floor, as with most "modern" houses. But, this is not a modern house! The tub/shower has plenty of hot water and a great water pressure. There is one large sink to share. The towels, bed linens and bed covers are quality. There is a laundry room area with a washer and dryer to use, if needed. The house is furnished mostly with lamps that you turn on at the source. One of the charms of this lovely restored home! The bathroom does have a wall switch to turn on a light as you enter and there is also a wall switch for an upstairs hall light. For house "entertainment" the living room is equipped with a flat screen TV with satellite and a DVD player. A ping pong table is upstairs. Our cell phones worked fine. Due to the country location, the internet was occasionally "persnickety", but certainly functional, and Daniel was always just a call away to help with any minor troubleshooting. In summation, we loved staying here (and so did our dog!!!). It is so peaceful and quiet you will feel like you are miles from "everywhere". It is rustic, but very comfortable, and a perfect place to relax. Highly recommended.

Farmhouse experience

So much ambiance. Peaceful and tucked away but not far off the main roads. Loved sitting at the breakfast table on the porch overlooking hay fields. Everything was comfortable (beds chairs sofas). There was a hammock, a little grill and a ping pong table. I appreciated that there were soaps and shampoos and coffee filters. And a hairdryer. Really the best blend of what you would expect at a hotel and the comfort of a home. I wrote to the owner Twice before our stay and the answers came almost immediately. For my first VRBO this was a wonderful experience. Would highly recommend.

Nice quiet spot about 15 minutes from Lake James. Daniel and Ellen were great and very helpful! Our dog loved it also, great places to walk both on the property and at the lake nearby. There is a winery right next door with live music and tastings that was so much fun! So relaxing, would definitely come again!

Cozy getaway

We stayed in this cozy old house for a weekend of fall hiking and loved the feeling of being off the grid while still having close access to a lot. The property is beautiful and has a lot of deer. There is a fun ping pong table upstairs and the bathroom is small but fully functional and clean. The decor really takes you back in time and we enjoyed taking a closer look at it all, almost as if you're in a museum. Daniel and Ellen are very nice and helpful too!
