About this property

TRINITY COTTAGE. Charming historic cottage just off the Quay in Appledore.

Trinity Cottage is charming old lighthouse keepers cottage in a fantastic location in the heart of Appledore, just off of The Quay. Situated on the historic Market Street, it is surrounded with cafes, art galleries, pubs, shops and restaurants, and possesses views at the rear of the property over the Old Buoy Store to the Quay front. The Cottage is just over a mile away from the long, sandy, surfing beach at Westward Ho!

Trinity Cottage’s spacious open plan sitting/dining area contains a wood burner, WiFi, Smart TV, DVD, Hi-Fi with Bluetooth, board games, jigsaw puzzles and books to provide the perfect environment for all-year-round relaxation.

This leads through to a modern and well equipped kitchen and bathroom with underfloor heating. Appliances include: Smeg cooker, induction hob, fridge with small freezer compartment, dishwasher, washing machine and microwave. Outside there is a lovely enclosed walled courtyard with seating and barbecue - a real suntrap! A side access gate leading towards the quay makes it ideal for storing bikes and surf boards.

The accommodation offers 2 bedrooms: 1 double with lovely views of the Quay front and over the estuary to Instow and 1 twin overlooking the historic Market Street. Bed linen, towels and electric heating are included. Dogs are allows for a fee of £35 per dog.

Appledore is a charming fishing village in North Devon, a maze of quaint narrow streets and chocolate box fisherman’s cottages with an abundance of galleries, craft shops, family friendly pubs, restaurants, shops and even a Maritime Museum. There is always something to do in Appledore; during the year there are many events such as the Appledore Regatta, the Carnival, the Mini Rally, the Literary Book Fair or the highly regarded Arts Fair. The village is steeped in history that can be traced back to the times of the Saxon’s or Viking raiders who, led by Hubba the Dane, were defeated here in the Battle of Bloody Corner circa 878AD. A plaque to the battle is visible between Appledore and Northam near the indoor swimming pool. Later on, in Elizabethan times, Appledore was one of the largest importers of tobacco so there are many tales of smugglers! To learn more you can even take one of the free historic tours organised by Docton Court.
The cottage is situated just off the Quay: a central focus of the village. It is here that you will find many activities occurring including fishing trips, crabbing, sometimes even performances from the local Morris dancers or the Appledore Band. Alternatively, you could choose to watch out for the sailing races, rowing fours, fishing trawlers or even the occasional ship whilst having finger licking fish and chips or an infamous Hocking’s ice cream locally made in Appledore.
Johns of Appledore caters for most of food and drink requirements, including a delicatessen counter and many locally produced foods. However, if you require a larger supermarket you will find Morrison’s, ASDA, Aldi and Lidl in the nearby town of Bideford. Travelling slightly further to Barnstable you will find most high street stores, Sainsbury’s, Tesco and even an M&S.
There are many pubs and restaurants in Appledore most of which are dog and children friendly. The Seagate is a very popular gastro pub (booking recommended), or try a pint and bite to eat overlooking the estuary at the Beaver Inn; often with live bands. The Champ also has lively bands and the option to ‘build your own burger’. The Royal George and The Coach and Horses are currently being refurbished but opening soon. For something a little more special try Bensons for fish or The Flame Factory for excellent freshly made pizzas but BOOK in advance of your holiday. There are two popular fish and chip shops in Appledore: Sylvestas and The Royal Place. Both offer take away, however, the Royal Place caters for eat-in dining or allows you to eat your fish at The Royal pub opposite (provided you are buying a drink there).

Parking is situated up and down the Quay front and is free at all times. If you cannot manage to park nearer the cottage, a large car park is situated 100 yards down the road. Moreover, there is a large slip way located in this car park which is ideal if you have your own boat.
Appledore is situated at the mouth of the Torridge Estuary. A costal path from the end of the village by the lifeboat station will take you across the 600 acres of Braunton Burrows Country Park with the oldest golf links in the country, to the golden sandy beach of Westward Ho! Ideal for surfing and family beach trips with life guard designated areas. The Braunton Burrows visitor centre will happily explain the different local fish, shells, crabs, birds you are likely to discover. They often hold ‘exploring mornings’ for children during the holidays e.g. at the rock pools. So it may be worth popping in to find out.
For older children (and adults) you may like to arrange a day or half day at Skern Lodge, which is located on the edge of Appledore. Fully geared up for sailing, surfing, kayaking, abseiling and much more. It is worth booking before you arrive to avoid disappointment. If children are over a certain age you can leave them there for the day, they will even supply packed lunches on request. Other popular activity venues are The Milky Way and The Big Sheep.
At the end of Westward Ho! Beach is the seaside resort of the same name. Immortalised by Charles Kingsley’s book it is a lively town with a promenade and amusements. From the far end of Westward Ho! a costal path takes you all the way to Cornwall (not to be done in a day!) If you did this you would encounter the beautiful views from the cliffs across to Lundy Island. You would come across little jewels like the village of Bucks Mills or Clovelly, a picturesque fishing village, which is a delight to explore with its steep cobbled streets leading down to a beautiful harbour. The heritage coastline continues to Hartland which is renowned for its steep rugged cliffs and many a shipwreck tale!
During the peak season there is a ferry going over to Instow (tide permitting) and in nearby Bideford you can hire bikes for the day or half day to explore the Tarka Trail - a disused railway line with wonderful views over the water leading all the way to Barnstable.

Appledore happiness
A lovely week in appledore. Trinity cottage was a great base in the town with everything in close proximity. Very relaxing and a beautiful view each morning of the quay across to Instow from the main bedroom made it even better. The back yard was brilliant with such excellent weather.

Trinity cottage
Felt it was over priced. No information leaflets about the area including tel. Numbers for local vets etc. review of beaches, pubs , cafes etc and things of interest in the area. No hairdryer!! Having said we did settle in and enjoyed the cottage with added bonus of the view from the bedroom. Difficult for dog owners as no nearby grassy areas for early morning and late walks as only the courtyard. Also had to pay £16 for parking.

Brilliant property
We stayed at Liza's lovely cottage for a few days and it was a really nice quaint experience in Appledore. It was exceptionally well furnished and decorated, with kitchen facilities being home from home, also the bathroom and shower was lovely (although downstairs). Appledore itself is a lovely little town, it has plenty of places to eat with a cafe literally next door and chippy 1 minute walk down the corridor of cottages, or you have westward ho 10 minutes away for a few more places to eat. Our only issue was the Noise was quite high from people jumping into the river from the side and couldn't leave the windows open for the baby to sleep, however that said we just got unlucky with this based on tides being late evening towards sunset. (Not sure they are that stupid to jump in with no water and the tide all out :)

Lovely cottage with great outside sunny courtyard
What a wonderful Cottage. There are a few important things for us when renting a holiday home, comfy bed, great shower, walking distance of restaurants and bars and outside space to enjoy a glass of wine or 2!! Trinity Cottage had all of these the courtyard garden has sunshine all day, the shower was very powerful and always had plenty of hot water and Appledore has everything you need to enjoy your stay!! The Weather helped as we had 27 degrees and sunshine every day, so spent the time, surfing, paddle Boarding and enjoying time on the beach. Also did some crabbing off the Quay, following the Colin the crab instructions of course!! Our Daughter would have liked WiFi in the house (she is 12) we thought it was great to have some WiFi free time!! Although had the weather not been as good we may have missed it a little more!! Thanks Liza for the information and for renting out your cottage for us all to enjoy. If we are back in the area we are sure to rebook. Jo, Pete and Molly

A lovely, spacious cottage with everything needed for a comfortable and relaxed holiday. The location couldn't be better and the little courtyard is a real bonus. Very well equipped kitchen and the bathroom well appointed; shower excellent for an over-bath one! Sitting room and bedrooms all spacious and comfortable; it's amazing what is packed into what looks from the outside quite a small place! Thank you Liza!

Lovely cottage in great location
Trinity Cottage is an ideal place to stay in Appledore right opposite the quay. The cottage is very comfortable, well kitted out and surprisingly spacious inside. The beds are very comfortable and the double bedroom has a lovely view of the quay. You can sit in the bed in the morning with a cup of tea and watch people running and walking their dogs along the quayside. The courtyard garden is a lovely place to soak up the sunshine on a sunny day and listen to music from the stereo in the living room. The shower in the bathroom is really good and the water runs fast for a nice bath. Correspondence with the owner was really good and Liza was very helpful and gave us a lot on information. The bottle of wine that was left in the fridge was a lovely touch. We had a lovely stay and would definitely return if we were travelling to Appledore again.

Very comfortable traditional cottage in a good location
We had a great week in Appledore and were very comfortable in this traditional cottage. Comfy bed, good shower and everything we needed kitchen-wise. We enjoyed watching the boats, rowers and people coming and going on the quayfront every morning when we woke up. Thank you for the wine and flowers. The Info does state no WiFi - we found we missed this more than we imagined but otherwise happy to get away at last! Lovely walk over the Burrows to Westward Ho!, into Bideford and then the coastal path to Instow. Would recommend The Beaver Inn and The Champ to eat and drink.

The property owner and manager were both exceptionally helpful. The house is perfectly situated in the town centre. A little street noise but nothing to keep you awake/wake you up. House has everything you need and is very comfortable. Car park near by with reasonable charges. Good facilities in town and lots of beautiful walks.

Why they chose this property

We have always loved Trinity Cottage. We have family nearby and Appledore has been a magical place to be. There is always something to do, surfing in the summer or walks with the dog and snuggling up in front of the woodburning stove with a jigsaw in the winter. Our 3 girls (now in their 20's) have holidayed with us here since they were babies and still love coming!

What makes this property unique

LOCATION! Right in the heart of the village, so you don't miss out on any of the fun stuff. Love having a cuppa in the morning looking out over the estuary watching the sailing races, Gigs etc. The thing that really sold us the cottage was the side access. It means you can park up in the Ope (small street alongside the cottage) and unload or load stuff, especially sandy surf boards, bikes etc. so you don't have to drag them through the house and can rinse them down outside. Easy level walking to shops, pubs and cafes. Fantastic longer walks too, often we don't use the car for a week when we are down!
