About this property

Family Beach House with 3 Master Suites

Casa Torotes is located on the sand of one of the most pristine beaches on the Sea of Cortez. The town of La Ribera and our beach, Playa Colorada, are still relatively off the beaten track and 2 hours from the bright lights of Cabo San Lucas. The serenity of the coastline is so captivating that time seems to slow down, and each day melts lazily into the one before. Casa Torotes can be many things: a multi-family retreat, a romantic getaway, or a fishing lodge for you and your friends. Our home is 10 minutes from Costas Palmas.

Our home can easily accommodate 3 families. We have 3 master suites with bathrooms, featuring double sinks and walk-in showers. There is also a 'dorm room' for overflow guests. Casa Torotes also features hand-painted walls, a laundry room, a large fully equipped modern kitchen, an outdoor barbecue, a spacious dining room with seating for 12, breakfast room, day room and living room. There are 2 fireplaces in the house, as well as an outdoor fireplace. A sunny courtyard and charming cantera stone fountain complete the picture in this delightful home. Extra housekeeping services and cooking can be arranged in advance

In Baja every day brings new opportunities and adventure is at your fingertips; this can include a trip to a once secret waterfall or hot springs in the mountains, kayaking or snorkeling off Punta Colorada or down at Cabo Pulmo, surfing at Todos Santos, or kite-surfing and windsurfing in Los Barriles. However, for many of our guests, the appeal of our home is simply enjoying life by the sea and doing nothing all day except taking a walk on the beach, soaking up the sun, floating in the sea and enjoying a good book.

For the fisherman, our home is situated on one of the most enviable locations on the Sea of Cortez; the famous Roosterfish Alley runs right out front! Every summer fishermen arrive from all over the world to take on the mighty Roosterfish, one of the most notorious fighters in the fish world. These fish are caught not only by boat, but also by fly casting from shore. Each morning the fishing fleets from Los Barriles and Rancho Leonero motor near our home to deep sea fishing locations off the coast to hunt marlin, dorado, tuna, wahoo, amberjack, grouper, snapper, triggerfish, pompano and more.

We have a wonderful house manager who can arrange meals, trips in the local area or fishing trips.

We built this home in 2000 and use it as an alternative family home and rent it out selectively to guests who share our sensibilities. There is no "owners closet". As an example we use the same dishwear and amenities as our guests.

It is a large (5,000 square foot) home. The open and shut fee of $250 reflects the fact that it takes 2 days for 2 local people to clean up after guests leave.

If you read our reviews, you will see that we have had 100% satisfaction ratings from all of our guests. Thank you, if this house meets your needs we'd look forward to sharing it with you.

Beautiful property
We loved the house so much! It was just my daughter and I. We had more family a couple houses away so it was a great escape. From the courtyard to the beach front porch it was so beautiful! We missed having a TV, but what a beautiful oceanfront property!

Absolutely perfect!
The house and property are more lovely and comfortable than I had imagined. It felt like a private beach out front. We did day trips to Cabo Pulmo and some other snorkel spots in the area, had a day of mountain biking in los Brailles and snuck in a little hiking. On calm days we were able to do long swims in the ocean out front. Just a perfect week.

Casa Torotes was perfect for our family of 9. It is located in a quiet neighborhood, not too far from the town of La Ribera. The house had EVERYTHING we needed. Charles & Erendida are the BEST! They were both very responsive & super helpful! We will definitely stay again!

Our stay in October
The house and location are amazing. Charles was a great communicator thru the whole trip and everyone we dealt with through our stay was very friendly and eager to help us out. We came in a day after a hurricane and knew there might be some hiccups, but they were minor and it was an amazing trip.

A great getaway for the whole family
This is a beautiful home in a stunning setting. The beach is your backyard. The home is tastefully decorated in the Mexican style and equipped with everything you need. There are great outdoor relaxing areas with hammocks, a courtyard with a fountain, and chaise lounges to sunbathe. So many many places to enjoy your morning coffee and evening margarita! For exercise you can run or walk up the beach both north and south or kayak, swim or beachcomb. The property manager speaks excellent English and can arrange for someone to cook meals, set up a fishing trip or assist in renting ATV’s. The owner was easy to communicate with and answered all of our questions promptly. We visited with 3 generations (ages 7-74) and we all had a great time.

Great House - La Ribera
Really nice stay in La Ribera. Communication with owner was terrific. House manager was instantly responsive on What'sApp (very popular in MX) - she helped arrange taxi runs to the airport. House was clean. Plenty of beds and bathrooms. Puzzles and games were used. Lot's of space. Beach right out the back door was wonderful for walks, sunbathing, etc. Courtyard was beautiful for the breezy days. La Ribera has many new places to eat that were excellent. Los Barriles only about 30 minutes away. Some VRBO properties can be very stuffy with many rules and regulations, this house has a very appealing casual vibe. Overall - great trip, will try and make it back.

Blissful beachfront retreat
We had an amazing beachfront (literally - it was right outside the door!) getaway at Casa Torotes. The home was beautifully and thoughtfully designed and appointed, and immaculately clean. We walked on the beach, played in the waves (it was a bit too windy to kayak and snorkel so we fully enjoyed the waves!), built sandcastles, rested in the hammock next to the fountain. Dinners were delivered to our group each night (thanks to Erindida and her sister), and we spent a spectacular day catching and eating fresh yellowtail with the crew at Buena Vida Sportfishing. We are already dreaming of a return visit!

Better than Photos
This property is nicer than photos depict. It’s huge with lots of beds. It was North winds when we visited mid December but we were visiting to attend a wedding at Las Barracas private property about 30 minutes south. So we did not spend much time at the house The caretaker Eren was excellent. We needed an iron for our wedding clothes and the house does not have an iron or ironing board (understandable, who needs that for an East Cape vacation??). Eren went out of her way to drop off a steam iron for us. She also was immediately responsive when there was an issue with the kitchen sink Highly recommend this place

Great Fishing Home Base
We were looking for a place to stay on the East Cape while we were fishing and wanted something near the beach that could accommodate all 8 of us. This home in La Ribera was everything we were looking for. It was just steps from the ocean and the house was unbelievably beautiful and unique. I can't wait to get back again it was an amazing experience.

2019 Christmas and New Year Vacation
Our family had a Fantastic time enjoying our holidays in this beachfront home, Casa Torotes. The home is beautiful, comfortable and well stocked. Especially appreciated were the helpful instructions to help us plan our local travels for sightseeing in the area as well as where to go for groceries and nearby restaurants. We arranged for a couple of homemade meals to be made and delivered and what a treat that was! We had enough delicious food leftover for the next day! Thanks to the owners and the property manager, Casa Torotes exceeded our expectations We look forward to a return in the future!

Gorgeous house on a quiet beautiful beach
This was a fantastic place for our family to spend Christmas! The house was in great shape and provided everything we could ask for - we didn't even need to buy water!! We cooked a lot and the kitchen was awesome in size and stocked well for feeding a large group. The beach was quiet and provided hours of beach combing and endless sand play for the kids. Overall the weather was beautiful altho cooler than I would have expected. The house provided a great many spots for people to spend time alone and to get out of the wind if desired. Bring sweatshirts!! The area is off the beaten path which was just what we wanted. La Ribera is tiny but we found a couple of good eats and basic groceries there. We will come back!! Thanks Kate for a wonderful time and sharing your house with us!

Perfect House Party on the East Cape!
The week we spent at Casa Torotes was the most restful I can remember. From walks on the beach to snorkeling and sunset dinners at nearby restaurants, we fell into an easy rhythm of seaside activity, camaraderie and, for example, reading on porch chaise longues that naturally led to the best siestas. We learned to stand on paddle boards (aka ‘SUP’), and move about the warm, calm waters that are 30 feet of beautiful beach from the Casa’s porch. This skill that had eluded us before our visit. By the end, though, we could pretty smoothly paddle about, as shown in photos we insisted our friends take of us. Living at Casa Torotes with 2 other couples, I can attest to its spacious, cool spaces that afforded each of us privacy and, when wanted, promoted conversation and interaction with our friends. If you don’t already know how to make a margarita, I can assure you that it’s easy to learn from the posted ‘house recipe’. Note: Fresh limes, cheese, crackers, etc are available a short drive away in the village of La Ribera. Important Foodie Info … The Casa has a fully equipped gourmet kitchen for cooking and entertaining, right down to the espresso and drip coffee machines. Wonderful local restaurants are within a 5-minute drive. Note: They also delivered right to our seashore vista. One adventure … I’d never driven an ATV (nor frankly had I ever thought of doing so), but it’s actually easy, and one of us was a good teacher. So when we wanted to go snorkeling I drove the ATV 3-4 minutes down the beach to a wonderful spot. Did I mention my wife sat behind me, holding on tighter than she has in years (something we’ve laughed a lot about since). Once settled, we waded a short way, then lost track of time floating and watching, and following myriad schools of colorful fish. One cool experience: Late one afternoon on the porch, over margaritas, we started seeing the occasional manta ray leaping out of the water. It turns out that our late April visit coincided with the their mating season, and that’s what they do. What an extraordinary sight, rays leaping several feet above the water and landing with a loud splash. And we had front row seats. No way did we get around to doing everything available. We didn’t make it, for example, to the secret waterfall. We hope to that (and a lot of relaxing) soon, when we next stay at Casa Torotes.

A perfect vacation spot!
Our stay at Casa Torotes was the perfect vacation: sparkling tropical water, miles of beach to explore, a spacious and beautiful house, and lots of other adventures to pursue in the area! Lovingly decorated with vibrant colors and locally crafted furniture and accessories, the house offers an amazing range of comfortable spaces to be together – or alone – whatever the weather or mood. The property and house are so extensive and well designed that a large group can easily gather for a meal or relaxing together or individuals can wander off to quiet spots either inside or out for some moments on their own. Our group of three couples enjoyed candlelit dinners on the front patio watching the spectacular sunsets and listening to the background music of the waves, as well as quiet suppers in the fountain courtyard when the wind picked up. The very well equipped kitchen – even a choice of cupcake tins for a birthday! – provided the cooks among us with everything needed to serve up delicious meals and snacks. For supplies, a short excursion to the friendly local markets in the village of La Ribera yielded nearly all we needed. Another day we headed to the bigger town of Los Barriles for a quick visit to the supermarket and an alfresco lunch at a local restaurant. We also treated ourselves to a scrumptious Mexican feast lovingly prepared and delivered by Eren, the property manager. Local activities include hiking to a waterfall, exploring the desert by all-terrain vehicle, deep-sea fishing, sea kayaking and other boating adventures, snorkeling, windsurfing or kite surfing, and shopping in Los Barriles. It’s also fun to explore the surrounding Baja countryside that still feels like Mexico and is as yet untouched by rows of resort hotels and the mass tourism of Cabo. My husband and I were most happy, though, wandering for miles down the nearly empty beach, swimming multiple times a day in the warm aqua waters of the Sea of Cortez, reading (and napping) in the shade on the rustic porch, and coming together with friends to squeeze the fresh limes for an evening margarita and start on that evening’s dinner preparations. We’re already thinking about a big family gathering there – can’t wait to go back!

Everything you could ask for!
We just returned from a week long stay here. As the title states, the house is everything you could ask for and more. It is secluded enough to give you privacy but close enough to town that you can make a quick drive. The layout of the house is absolutely perfect for large groups. The rooms are set off on the far wing of the house so ppl can go to bed early or sleep in and not be disturbed by the rest of the group. The house is well equipped to meet all your cooking needs. There is a large table on the outdoor patio facing the water. It was amazing to sit there and enjoy dinner with friends while watching the sunset over the mountains surrounding Los Barriles. The home owners were extremely helpful with answering questions prior to the trip and I felt extremely comfortable with the location and what I was receiving for my money. Honestly, the house setup could not be anymore perfect. The local housekeeper was also fantastic. She arranged transportation to and from the airport for our group. She answered any questions we had while there and arranged a local cook to deliver food two nights while we were there. I highly suggest you take advantage of this. We had enough food for two days and it was fabulous! I'm hoping to make two trips to Baja next year and will be booking this house if it is available. One with my parents and extended family and another with friends. We caught large snapper right off the beach! If you have a large group or multiple families on the trip, this is the house for you. The house is amazing, I cannot say enough about it. The views are incredible. If you have never been to this area, you will not want to leave. Both the owners and the local house keeper is extremely nice and helpful. I would suggest this house to anyone who is not looking for " in town Cabo type experience." You will fall in love with the place.

One week was not enough!
Our vacation at Casa Torotes last week was such a blessing for our family...total relaxation...beautiful views...long walks on the beach...kayaking...sunrises...ATV adventures...snorkeling in Cabo Pulmo...great swimming...hiking to flat top at sunrise...tacos at El Viejo in Los Barriles...and so much more! The owners provided us with detailed information about the house from the first e-mail inquiry and were very organized throughout the whole rental process. We have rented on VRBO several times and this has been one of our best experiences. The property manager, Eren, was delightful and delivered an amazing authentic Mexican dinner the first night for a reasonable price. The house was even better than we expected and had everything we needed. We loved it! Thank you K&C!!!!

About the host

Host profile image
Kate and Charles lived and worked in Orange County in California; and always lived near the water and together enjoyed most water-oriented activities. Kate died in 2021 after our 42 years of marriage. We have a son and a daughter, both of whom are married; we have 4 young granddaughters and 1 grandson. Filling Casa Torotes with our large extended family and many water-loving friends is a dream come true for us.

Why they chose this property

We took a vacation at Rancho Leonero in 1997 and loved the area. We bought our property, built our house and had it ready for occupancy by July 2001...this was long before there was a Costco or Home Depot in Cabo San Lucas! The 2 hour flight from Orange County makes it a breeze to get to the house and sink into the easy rhythms of life on the Sea of Cortez.

What makes this property unique

I encourage you to familiarize yourself with our area. Our home is between the new Costas Palmas 4 Seasons resort and Lighthouse Estates to the South/East. There are less than 10 houses (of which you may rent less than 5 from our neighbors) directly on the beach within this 5 mile stretch of pristine beach.
