The perfect peaceful hide away!

Cozy place!! Close to our favourite beach, Rissers. We fell asleep to the beautiful sound of the rain tap dancing on the metal roof. We were awakened to the sweet morning greetings of song birds and a rooster crowing. Enjoyed our morning tea on the front porch to the curiosity of chickens clucking all around us. Monika and Karl’s property is an absolute gem!!

Beautiful, idyllic place

Exceptionally kind and friendly hosts, beautiful property and lovely small house. Enjoyed visits from curious chickens and turkeys during the day. A cozy woodstove inside and a fire pit under the stars out in the yard. I will definitely be returning!

Thoreau's Walden on Nova Scotia's South Shore

What an amazing experience. I truly wish I could have stayed longer. I was at the cottage during the end of June and was surrounded by beauty. Wild flowers, scenic landscapes, and nature's chorus. (I'd forgotten how the city drowns out the singing of birds.) Mostly, serenity and calm. I was so relaxed, I actually slept twelve hours one night, compared to my usual count of seven or eight. Other things to note: 1. Both Karl and Monika bend over backwards to ensure their guests' comfort and are extremely respectful of privacy. 2. Crescent Beach is less than a five minute drive from the cottage, and if you need additional food or supplies, the town of Bridgewater is 20 minutes away. 3. Chickens! They are really cute. In the end, the question isn't "if" I would return to the Hilltop Farm Cottage; rather, it's "when." I highly recommend it.

Like going home

My son and I made our second trip to HillTop a few weeks ago, and, like the first time, the experience was a lovely one. The cottage was as cute, cozy and accommodating as before and Karl & Monika were, as expected, excellent hosts. Upon our arrival, I said to my nine-year-old that, "It feels like I'm coming home from somewhere after being away a long time." There is just something about the spot that puts your everyday stress and nonsense on standby soon as you get there. There were some new additions to the barnyard family, including one yearling calf and a spring-born calf named Junie; a nest of barn swallows (protected species). There was a great little farmstand on site where I loaded up on freshly harvested, organic veggies at a fraction of the cost you'd pay in a store. Monika even went so far as to provide me with extra beets for canning! Karl took my son on a morning walkabout 'round the farm, the first morning, helping him to pick me a nosegay of sweetpea flowers while I slept in (I'm SO not a morning person, haha), showed him some of the newer plants they've introduced, changes to the greenhouses and how the irrigation/well system is set up. There was the usual visit with "Quack" the chicken, the new rooster and egg gathering, too, of course! As if planned, the weather was perfect for trips to the nearby community shops, markets and white-sand beaches of the area. Looking forward to a visit again next summer - maybe two! I have and would, again, highly recommend to anyone needing a break from the daily grind to stay here.

Restful, relaxing...one feels like time has stopped!

Hilltop Farm is a beautiful get-away, especially for those who wish to avoid the crowds in campsites or resorts. It’s a lovely, tranquil organic garden and small farm that provides a unique sanctuary. Yet, it is close to all the amenities...movies on a rainy day, ocean front beaches and markets or shopping. Wonderful hosts!

Breathtaking

Within 20 minutes of arriving at HillTop Cottage with my 7 year-old son, I already knew we'd be returning next year for an even longer duration. The cottage was absolutely precious and had everything needed to have a comfortable stay. The property was absolutely beautiful with wild and cultivated flowers, greenhouses and gardens full of organic vegetables everywhere; a rustic chicken coop with dozens of laying hens offered the opportunity to collect eggs; a large, old barn was home to three beautiful cattle...one, Mabel, just two months old. Down through the lush, old and new growth forest, behind the cottage was a great pond, complete with beaver dam, ducks, an abundance of frogs and dragonflies of all sizes. The forest was carpeted in beautiful mosses, ferns and several varieties of interesting fungi. At night, stars peppered the sky and coyotes sang a few songs with the crickets. By day, butterflies, crickets, locusts, birds... We were even lucky enough to catch a peek at one of the shy resident cats, Georgie, spying on us from the pumpkin patch. All of this, within ten minutes or so of two large and very beautiful, white sand beaches... and the owners/hosts...well, what can I say? Absolutely wonderful people. Karl took my son under his wing and had him collecting eggs and milking a cow the day after we arrived. He even got him to eat kale, fresh from the garden. Monika was chatty, funny and the kind of person you feel you've known for years even if it's only been a few hours. Together, they are the kind of people you hope to be lucky enough to have as friends and I know we will keep in touch. My son and I were both teary-eyed when it was time to pack up and go. I simply cannot put into words the overall happy, peaceful, stress-free feeling of being there. It's a way of living that one dreams about. Five stars isn't enough.

We are Karl and Monika and we have been on the South Shore of Nova Scotia since 2011. We have a hobby farm where we do some market gardening, have laying chickens and farm cats. A working homestead and we love it. We have traveled and experienced many places and definitely consider this home.

Why they chose this property

This was the best ever case scenario for us. The property has acreage for animals as well as being able to keep the land that surrounds us protected. There is a lake in front and an incredible view in the back. We can even see on a clear day, a peak of the ocean from the upstairs of our home.

What makes this property unique

This is our home and homestead. There is nature all around and open spaces which makes us feel very grounded. We are also fairly close to the airport to pick up visiting family as well as a town that has all the amenities that we need.
