LOCATION
Villanova (Biddanoa in Sardinian language) is one of the four historic districts of Cagliari, founded in the thirteenth century at the foot of the eastern side of the hill on which stands Castello. The first inhabitants of the district were the farmers of the near “Campidano” who had commercial activities in the city. Villanova was created when these peasants decided to settle closer to Cagliari in order to promote their activities. Until the early decades of the twentieth century, the agricultural origin of the district was also revealed by the numerous vegetable gardens and vineyards that surrounded it. The district today presents itself with its old side, located between the Via Garibaldi and the embankment of Viale Regina Elena, characterized by simple houses built on one or two floors, several churches and numerous shops, and the most recent side, crossed by the central and busy via Sonnino with the palaces which arose from the 1930s that gradually occupied the countryside where some important monuments stood out, such as the Basilica of San Saturnino and the close by necropolis, today surrounded by the chaotic coming and going of the modern city. Villanova is home to two important archconfraternities, particularly involved in the rites of the Holy Week in Cagliari.
It should be noted that the "Villanova" district is located within a restricted traffic area (ZTL). Therefore, guests who have a car will not be able to park inside or transit the ZTL area between 09:00pm and 7:00am and from 03.30pm to 05.00pm
