Modern Zen is a sophisticated and tasteful blend of modern and serene. Set in the redwoods of Cazadero near Austin Creek, this mid-century modern compound embraces stylish amenities like a hot tub, remodeled kitchen, outdoor shower and entertainment technology. Get away from it all in a two bedroom main house and separate private suite.

Outside is divine! The main deck sports a dining table for morning mimosas and alfresco meals, propane BBQ, large hammock (that gets a perfect amount of sunshine in the afternoon), plenty of welcoming seating and views up the hillside and into the redwood trees. It's the perfect gathering place between the main house and the private suite. Around the corner and completely private, a 6 person hot tub awaits. Just steps away is a private outdoor shower, hooks for towels and gate to the lower yard and fully fenced dog run.

In the main house the freshly remodeled kitchen has all new stainless steel appliances including dishwasher, a multi-tiered island and is open to the dining area and comfortable living room. The kitchen is well-appointed with quality cookware and colorful Fiestaware. This open floorplan is ideal for group cooking and congregating. No one is left out of the fun! Spread out in the living room to watch TV or stream music through the new flat screen Roku TV. Retreat to your cozy bedroom with a memory foam king bed and one with a queen bed. Each bedroom has a TV and sliding glass doors to the deck and hot tub. Get ready in the stylish main bathroom with heated floors, tiled shower/tub combo and marble counter top.

Cross the multi-level deck to the charming private suite with queen bed, separate comfortable seating area with TV and DVD player, full bathroom with heated floors and kitchenette with washer and dryer. This space is equally inviting when sun streams through the windows or rain patters on the roof. Make coffee in the kitchenette or grab a snack from the mini fridge before joining everyone in the main house for breakfast.

Native ferns, rhododendrons and thimbleberries thrive under the redwood trees with Japanese maples, climbing roses and camellias. Families, friends, dog owners and everyone else will love staying at this peaceful retreat in the woods - that's just a short drive to world class restaurants and wineries. Hiking in Armstrong Redwoods State Park or along the Sonoma Coast is minutes away.

Know Before You Book:

Maximum Occupancy and Quiet Hours: The maximum occupancy at Modern Zen is 6. Quiet hours are from 10:00 p.m. until 7:00 a.m. Outdoor amplified sound is prohibited at any time.

Parking: On-site parking is available for 3 vehicles. RVs, trailers and campers are prohibited, per the Sonoma County Vacation Rental Ordinance.

Bed Sizes: First Bedroom: King Bed, Second Bedroom: Queen Bed, Private Suite: Queen Bed.

Heat Source: The main house has central heat and wood burning fire place. The private suite has a gas fireplace.

A/C: The house does not have air conditioning. Being near the coast, the night time temps drop and just opening some windows is usually enough to cool the house.

Dog Run: A large dog run (approx. 1,500 square feet) with entrances through the deck off the hot tub and a gate at the bottom of the driveway has 4 foot tall fencing. The area is a combination of flat and hilly and may not be suitable for very small dogs.

Lovely, Relaxing Stay

We greatly enjoyed our stay at the home. Lots of space for family and dog. Kitchen was well-appointed. Management company was very responsive. We would love to come back and spend more time. Our stay was much too short.

Side trip before conference in Reno

The property was great. So quiet and peaceful, with beautiful surroundings. Great location for short trips to nearby places and also worth taking a longer drive to Avenue of the Giants. House was well furnished and equipped and full of information for local places to visit. Hosts provided great communication ahead of our stay with reminders while we were there. If we are ever so fortunate to return to the Russian River Valley, we will definitely book this property again.

We loved this peaceful retreat complete with redwoods, hammock and large hot tub, river flowing by across the street. The "suite", a second small house on the property, made the place very spacious.

Another stellar stay

This was our 2nd stay at Modern Zen in 2 months. I feel so at home here. Quiet, surrounded by trees, beautiful back deck area. The home is well cared for, well layed out, and like the pics. We look forward to another stay.

Lovely, restful home in the trees

We had a lovely rainy weekend at this house. We agreed that this is the best-documented vacation home any of us had stayed at. It's very well set up for guests. We appreciated the separate suite, the heated bathroom floors, and the hot tub. It was too rainy to use the outdoor hammock, but we hope to return another time to enjoy it. Overall, this was a great vacation home and we would happily rent it again.

Peaceful and relaxing stay

We had a great stay at Modern Zen. The pics in the VRBO website are pretty much spot on. The beds were very comfortable as was the sofa and chairs in the living room. It was quiet - not much too much traffic on Austin Creek Rd during our stay. Views of redwoods and the forest all around. The kitchen has updated appliances and had pretty much everything we needed (glad I brought coffee filters. The heated floors in the bathroom were unexpected and welcome. The furnace is very efficient, especially on a cold rainy day. Convenient o Guerneville and Monte Rio. I will definitely reserve this home again as it was a nice relaxing environment.

Beautiful week spent in the Redwoods

What a peaceful, amazing place to have had the pleasure of enjoying. Birds throughout the trees, fire pit to take the chill away after dark on the private deck, amazing access to the beach (ocean and river), just the perfect well spent at a stunning property.

Redwood retreat

Home is lovely. We had problems with TV but found ourselves outside most of the time. Great proximity to several tiny towns. We took advantage of local farmer’s markets. Would recommend to adults looking for a calm and quiet get away.

Clean house great stay

Overall the house worked great for us and we were impressed with how well appointed it was with everything we needed. very clean and organized with information on where to find everything. Great for the dogs. Dog run was different than expected not much room for play as it is on a hill, but we added fencing to cover hillside openings to the fenced deck yard and that worked well for our pups. Nice hot tub and outdoor shower was very helpful.

great reunion spot

I thought i had already reviewed the property. East Coast family met West Coast family at Modern Zen. Property was perfect. Young folk stayed in main house, old folk in private suite w/2 dogs. Well appointed, comfortable, beautiful trees! Dogs enjoyed the dog run and we enjoyed hikes, food, drinks in the area, always glad to return to hot tub and comfort,

Lovely home in the redwoods

The house was perfect for our family. The adult "kids" stayed in the main house and Mom and Dad enjoyed the separate guest house. The kitchen was very well equipped, we enjoyed cooking and using the grill. The location was perfect for going to the coast and wineries/towns. The hot tub was great, used every evening! The rental company supplied a mat for the front door as we had flood conditions the first few days and lots of wet feet. Would love to stay again if in the area.

Relaxacation

This place definitely will provide a relaxing vacation! House and suite were both very clean and organized making it easy to find everything! We loved hanging out on the deck with charcuterie and wine and meals by the fire pit. Living room in the main house was cozy and a great place with a large flat screen to watch football on Sunday. We all loved our stay and highly recommend to others if your looking for relaxation.

Nice place but wouldn't return

Very nice property. Suited our family's needs well. Lovely furnishings, enjoyed the hot tub. Location was peaceful yet close to several small local wine country towns. Having stayed at several VRBO properties in the past, I feel I should honestly point out a few issues. Lack of a few basic supplies: no hand soap, very little shampoo or laundry soap, no supply of toilet paper. What left us with an overall negative impression was our communication with the property management. We were emailed instructions for check in, which I printed and brought with me. There were various instructions about getting keys from the lockbox (try this code, if that doesn't work try this other code). Neither code worked so we called the manager. The property manager seemed somewhat annoyed and stated that she had followed up with an email stating the lockbox wasn't working and that the key had been left in a certain location. During our stay a person came to look at the lockbox but it was not fixed. Upon leaving we left the keys in the same location we found them. We had no negative issues during our stay and had a pleasant time. I believe we left the property in proper condition upon checkout and left well before the expected time. Not long after leaving I received a phone call from the property manager asking if I was aware of damage to the hot tub. And by damage, I mean two small wooden decorative exterior panels (approx. 4"x6") which appeared to have fallen off. I stated that this was the state of the hot tub when we arrived and that we had nothing to do with the situation. The manager said how unfortunate it was that they had not been notified before the end of our stay so the issued could have been resolved. We did not notify the manager because it had no impact on the function of the hot tub and honestly we did not see it as a pressing issue. Again, the manager seemed somewhat annoyed and I questioned whether she believed my explanation. Overall awkward experience which left us happy to leave.

A truly wonderful and unique find

We (two adult couples)stayed at Modern Zen for a week over the July 4 holiday and loved the property. Everything is as advertised or better. Mostly better. The area is totally peaceful, nestled in the redwoods, with little traffic nearby. The kitchen is fully equipped and included everything I could have imagined, from a Kitchen-aide stand mixer to a rapid bottle chiller. The one minor issue we had was quickly resolved to our full satisfaction. We would definitely stay here again if in the area.

In 1980, D&G founders and owners Michael and Patty saw a need in the area for habitable, affordable housing. At that time, many of the little cabins along the Russian River, originally built as summer cabins, were unsuitable for year-round occupancy. D&G assisted property owners with fixing up and renting their cabins. As the largest property management company in western Sonoma County, D&G Equity Management continues to be a staple in the Russian River community.

Russian River Vacation Homes is an off-shoot of D&G. One fine day in 1985, Michael's client, Bob, asked "Hey Mike, can you rent my cabin out just for the week or weekend instead of by the month?" Michael said "Sure!" and Russian River Vacation Homes was born. As renting vacation rentals became more popular, Russian River Vacation Homes grew into a full-time business with its own office. Today, Russian River Vacation Homes professionally manages over 60 high-quality vacation rentals.

Modern Zen is located in the historic peaceful village of Cazadero amongst the redwood trees. Cazadero is 7 miles to the Sonoma coast, 8 miles to Guerneville,5 miles to Monte Rio, 3 miles to Duncan’s Mills and a short drive to Russian River Valley wineries. Cazadero has an old fashioned country stor!e and a coffee shop. Duncan's Mills, Guerneville, and Monte Rio have a number of great restaurants. Duncan's Mills has a number of boutique shops. Monte Rio has a public beach with boat rentals (June-September), a movie theater and a small store.
