Historic Barn conversion in the heart of Worcestershire, sleeping 7

Coach House Barn is a self-catering barn conversion situated in the picturesque village of Defford, just a short drive from Pershore, in the heart of Worcestershire. Originally the coach house to Defford House it has a fascinating history, dating back to the 1830’s. Allegedly Queen Victoria’s Aunt Adelaide, the dowager Queen, would visit the house en-route to visit her relatives at Croome Court.

Coach House Barn is located within the walled gardens of Defford House, however is a private residence and offers a tranquil retreat for families and friends. It is cosy but spacious providing three separate sleeping areas. It has been renovated to a high standard and care taken to retain the conservation and historic character of the building. With a wealth of exposed brickwork, oak beams, and bespoke features the Barn feels contemporary and modern.

The interior has been designed with a combination of modern and antique furniture with original art works dotted all through the property. It has three double bedrooms, one of which has a single bedroom attached and all have ensuite bathrooms. Children are very welcome, and a traditional cot can be provided on advance booking together with a highchair and stair gate.

The accommodation:

The large open plan living area has a dining table to seat seven, two sofas, an armchair and coffee table. There is also WiFi and a TV, with Netflix.

The kitchen is fully equipped with electric cooker, hob and hood, stainless sink, kettle, microwave, cooking utensils, fridge/freezer, dishwasher, washing machine, crockery, and cutlery.

In the hall there is a galleried staircase and barn glazed doors. There is a display case containing board games, DVDs and books. There are several books for small children. A cupboard under the stairs contains hoover and cleaning materials.

Off the hallway downstairs there is a double bedroom which has just been added to the property. There is a double bed, bedside tables, and small window with a shutter in this room. There is an ensuite bathroom with a single shower, small vanity, and toilet.

The two-tier staircase ends in a short mezzanine with a gallery and two separate sleeping areas to each side.

The master bedroom has exposed beams and brickwork, two skylights, king sized bed, bedside tables, double wardrobe, dressing table and full length mirror. The bed linen provided is Egyptian cotton with feather and down filled pillows and duvet. The ensuite has a separate bath, walk in double shower, toilet, vanity hand basin and heated towel rail.

Location:

Defford is a village on the edge of Bredon Hill and it’s renowned for its agriculture, specialising in asparagus and fruit. The village is situated off a main road, equidistant to Pershore and Upton-upon-Severn by about three miles. Both small towns are very popular with tourists and have a holiday atmosphere, with a range of activities, including a cinema, art gallery, theatre, boat trips and a range of good quality restaurants.

Coach House Barn is located within the walled garden of one of the Defford village’s Georgian historic buildings. The garden has been designed with attention to detail with box hedging and espalier apple trees. The sunny private courtyard has an abundance of planting ranging from Olive trees to Japanese Acers, suitable for relaxing and alfresco dining. There is outdoor seating and a parasol in the summer. The bins to the property are housed behind the gate and are out of sight.

Defford is well situated centrally in the country, and for visitors to the area traveling by car; it is just ten minutes journey time off the M5. It is relatively easy to get to from most areas in the country. There is a train station in Pershore, and Worcester, which are on the main rail network connecting country wide.

The rental includes exclusive use of a private courtyard; secure parking for up to two cars, central heating, and all utilities. Bed linen and towels are provided. For the comfort of all our customers we do not permit pets in the Barn, and smoking is permitted in the courtyard terrace.

Before your arrival to Coach House Barn, you will receive full and detailed directions. From 4:00pm the Barn will be ready, spotlessly clean and prepared for your stay with more details about the property such as WiFi code.

The Barn should be vacated by 10.00 am on the leaving day.

70th birthday celebrations at Coach House Barn
Coach House Barn was the perfect accommodation for my dad’s 70th birthday celebrations (4 adults and 2 young children). The barn is beautifully decorated, spotless and well equipped - great kitchen facilities and all the necessary cleaning bits, plenty of toiletries, comfy beds, blankets, books, board games, TV, dvds etc etc. Lisa & Nick were excellent hosts, greeting us on arrival and welcoming us with a food & drink hamper. A really lovely touch. Lisa was brilliant on the lead up to our stay, always quick to respond and happy to help with recommendations & requests. She was so accommodating when I asked for early check in. We would love to return one day as we had such a brilliant time. Thank you.

What a delightful property and excellent hosts
Our preference is to stay in self-catering over a hotel and this was one of the loveliest ones we have stayed in. It was very cozy, well laid out and everything we needed. The welcome basket goodies were so very much appreciated. It was exceptionally nice to find that basic amenities like tea, coffee, sugar, milk in the fridge was already stocked. Lisa and her husband were excellent hosts and utterly charming. Thank you for giving our visiting friends from the states a perfect example of English hospitality and charm.

Perfect location
We meet up with friends annually and the Malverns was ideal for us, being half way between Hampshire and Cheshire. Malvern Hills has some amazing countryside and is so handy for visiting the Cotswolds too. We particularly enjoyed our trip to Great Malvern. Lovely views from the Worcester Beacon followed by a very tasty lunch at Faun!

Beautiful Property
I was very happy with our stay. Beautiful property. Lisa and Nick were lovely hosts - very friendly and helpful during our stay. We had a lovely welcome hamper waiting for us on our arrival with a few basics and some yummy luxuries. It was most welcome. The only, minor negative aspect was that the directions to find the property on our arrival were pretty scant. Once I contacted Lisa by phone it was swiftly resolved. We all thoroughly enjoyed our weekend. Thanks to Lisa and Nick for making it a lovely break.

Perfect
Quiet but well situated property for getting around the region. Lisa was a perfect host- at hand if we had questions, warm and welcoming but not intrusive . Spotless inside with comfortable beds and well equipped. The gift basket was a lovely touch. If you have a family or friend who struggles with stairs the ground floor bedroom with enquire bathroom is great. Parking is right outside. We stayed in Sept but this would also make for a cosy winter break.

Heart of England experience
The property lived up to all expectations and more. Lisa and Nick , the owners, were wonderful hosts and have accomplished a great conversion of a former barn into delightful home from home. Situated in Defford, a village in the heart of the Evesham Vale, the property is ideally placed to visit local historic places of interest and the nearby Cotswolds. You will need a car to explore the nearby sights and there is ample parking next to the barn. The region is well known for its agriculture so there are numerous restaurants, pubs, farm shops that serve local produce nearby. If you are looking for a quintessential English countryside experience with all the comforts of home, I would , without hesitation,, recommend you stay here. Thank you Lisa and Nick for making our stay so memorable.

Walking in the Malverns
We had a lovely three days staying at the barn. Beautiful property, lovely master bedroom with large en suite, everything we needed for our stay and all very clean. The third bedroom would have been ideal for a grandparent - it's linked to the twin room, but is private and has it's own bathroom. The hosts were friendly and happy to provide local information and recommend restaurants. I would recommend the property to anyone wanting visit the area.

Cosy weekend stay
We spent a lovely weekend in this beautifully decorated and furnished barn. The location was just what we wanted and we all enjoyed the fresh air and were lucky enough to have warm and sunny Autumn days. We visited Upton-upon-Severn and had a lovely walk along the river bank before paying a visit to Clive's Farm. Thanks very much and we hope to see you again.

About the host

Hosted by Lisa S

Host profile image
I love hosting Coach House Barn and have enjoyed meeting the many different guests over the years. I am an experienced host and run the Barn form my house next door as well as working as an artist and writer from my studio. I am at hand to answer any questions and have designed the space for the guests feel private but secure.

Why they chose this property

Coach House Barn is well situated and easily accessible from major motorway networks. The local towns are Pershore and Upton on Seven and have a lot going on in terms of art, music and culture. There is a local pub The Defford Arms serving traditional food and five minutes drive away the village of Birlingham has The Swan pub serving excellent food. There are many other restaurants and pubs in the area as well as beautiful walks. Defford is in between Bredon Hill and The Malverns, which make excellent days out. Slightly further afield and easily reached within 30 mins is the Cotswolds.

What makes this property unique

My property has a unique background relating to the history of the village. It has been architect designed with attention to detail, retaining the historical character whilst creating a contemporary space. As owners of the property we live in the adjoining house, so we are mindful to create privacy for our guests whilst being at hand if required. Whilst the barn is cosy, visitors have been surprised by the spaciousness of the interior and privacy this allows. The three separate sleeping areas, have their own walk in shower and equipped bathroom. The bigger upstairs bedroom is a suite with a small sofa, dressing table and double wardrobe. The space suits families and friends meeting up. There are five beds, of which two are doubles, over four separate bedrooms. As well as being suitable for seven individuals one baby in a cot can be accommodated.
