About this property

The Lady Maxwell Room at Buittle Castle, Arts & Crafts Room in a Medieval Castle

Beautifully appointed, the Lady Maxwell Room at Buittle Castle offers the experience of staying in a working, privately owned Scottish Castle. The room is on the ground floor, with its own private access to the courtyard (with one step) and its own ensuite bathroom with shower. Full Scottish or Continental Breakfast is included, and is served in the room. We aim to offer the guests a true 'country house' experience.

As part of our effort to reduce our environmental impact, gourmet tea and coffee are provided by the house manager upon request.

The site which the present tower occupies was once the inner bailey of the medieval Buittle Castle, one of Scotland's royal castles and twice capital of Scotland. Buittle was home to Lady Devorguilla of Galloway and the Bailliol Dynasty, and later a Jacobite stronghold of the Gordon and Maxwell families, who re-constructed the original 13th Century keep into the present L-plan tower, c.1500. Buittle Castle, unlike many such buildings, remains very much a working building, and so retains the 'feel' that these buildings had when first built, surrounded by formal gardens, livestock, vegetable growing and pleasure grounds. It is currently home to James, the 24th great grandson of Lady Devorguilla, and his cousin Tobias, who have re-acquired the castle after roughly 60 years of it being out of family ownership. The site is also home to a working printing office specialising in craft letterpress printing and bookbinding, and a medieval chapel, with an interesting Jacobite history, in which services are regularly celebrated in the pre-reformation Use of Sarum.

A lovely overnight stay at a beautiful Castle
Me and my partner had a lovely peaceful overnight stay at this wonderfully charming Castle. We were welcomed by Tobias and made to feel at home. The room was decorated with nice period features and had interesting details to look at. We had the choice of eating in the Great Hall for breakfast which was amazing. There was plenty of outdoor space to walk around and the views were excellent. The local town of Dalbeattie was a good place to have a meal. We loved our peaceful stay, and would come back again.

Excellent, dog friendly location
We recently stayed one night at the castle and found the room to be comfortable and clean. The breakfast was as described and was brought to our room at the time requested. We particularly enjoyed the riverside walk around the castle which is easy to follow and met the approval of our dog.

Very memorable stay in Galloway
We stayed two nights after visiting other parts of Scotland. Buittle Castle was a fascinating location and we were lucky to be able to talk to our hosts about the history and the substantial improvements they have made in recent years. The Lady Maxwell Room was very comfortable and well fitted out. Dinner in the main hall was organised in advance and of a high standard with an interesting and good value wine list. Breakfast was also very enjoyable and we were able to arrange an early one on the day of departure. We will definitely consider coming back if ever in this area again.

Overnight stay at Buittle Castle
Arriving in the dark, we found Tobias waiting for us on site and due to the pouring rain we quickly made our way to our room. The room was spacious with a log burning stove which although there was wood we had no firestarting equipment to light it. That would've been a nice touch as the night got colder and the one radiator wasn't enough to heat the whole room. Bed was very comfortable and we had a great night's sleep. Bathroom was clean with ample toilet roll and hand soap. Main door could've used a mat to mop up the dirt and rain from our feet on entry and a couple of coat hooks behind the door for wet jackets. Tobias, really looked after us with silver service coffee once we had settled in. Choice for breakfast was excellent the produce was local and a perfect Gluten Free breakfast was available and tasty. Once the day light arrived we were surrounded by beautiful grounds and a lovely sunken garden. We would definitely return.

Buittle Castle Stay
Very charming place to stay. The room was clean and had all amenities listed. We loved the charming feel of staying in a very old castle, which is what we were looking for. The grounds are just gorgeous and peaceful. We indulged in the private dining in the Medieval Hall, I can’t say enough about that. It was so lovely and we felt like a Laird and Lady. It’s worth the extra cost. Our host Tobias was so gracious and helpful with any questions or directions. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Buittle Castle

A cosy, historic stay
We only stayed in the Lady Maxwell room for one night but would recommend it. The dog-friendly and spacious room had everything we needed. The booklet in the room explaining the history of Buittle Castle was an interesting read. Breakfast was delicious and it was a treat to get to eat in the historic great hall. The grounds are beautiful and the area was very peaceful.

Disappointing
By its nature the accommodation fitted in with castle but it was tired and needed attention. We lost sight of the number of cobwebs which had been there for some time. The bathroom sink was badly cracked the toilet seat needed replaced and there was black mould along the edge of the bottom of the shower the accommodation was cold when we arrived and took several hours for the room to be acceptably warm. We have pictures of all the issues we have highlighted. Just to finish Tobias could not have been more helpful but with these many issues this is not somewhere we could recommend

Tranquil getaway
We totally enjoyed the tranquil setting. Loved spending time walking the sunken garden and relaxing on one of the many benches around the estate and castle grounds. Tobias as co-owner and on site manager met us personally and reviewed room amenities. Basic are nicely covered. We truly enjoyed the great hall dining experience and the meal and service was excellent. Many thanks Tobias for all of your efforts and the evidence of ongoing work on your passion to create and restore an authentic getaway experience. My wife and I look forward to staying with you again on our next journey across the pond to Scotland.

Buittle Castle 🏰 Beautiful Property
What a beautiful spot. Tranquil and close to drive by towns. The Entrepreneurs, Chef and The Baron James de Balliol-Cavendish and Cousin Tobias Parker, owners have bought the Castle to another level and keeping some traditional alive. Excellent hosts and hard working team. Absolutely Carl and I would recommend a few days here. All the Best to Buittle Castle and their future businesses and keeping their legacy intact. Fabulous. Historic. Comfortable.
Such a great and unusual, quirky stay in a small castle. Steeped in history - but with a hot tub! Excellent communications, delicious well-cooked food and a great hall to eat it in, to boot. Unforgettable and highly recommended.

Fabulous Stay
This was our third visit to Buittle Castle and it was wonderful. Food was delicious and loved having the log burner in our room. Buittle is in a good location close to Kirkcudbright & Rockcliffe which are well worth a visit. Tobias & James were great hosts, thanks again for a special couple of days.

Perfect stay
If you are looking for a bed & breakfast stay that is just a bit different Buittle Castle is the place to go. We were greeted on arrival and shown to our room which was comfortable and had the benefit of a log fire with a good supply of logs to keep it going till bedtime. Breakfast was served in our room at a prearranged time and was first class. Delicious. The history of the place is amazing and the grounds were perfect for walking our dog. A very pleasant stay.

8/10 Good

Post visit review regarding short stay at Buittle castle
Overall the short visit was fully rewarding although there were a couple of concerns. Firstly, the door to the Lady Maxwell room was difficult to open and required considerable strength. Had the occupant been of frail stature then he/she would have been enclosed without a telephone to ring for help. Secondly, the hot tub was great but although we may have missed it in the dark a light above the tub may be useful. The visit in general was great and managed by both James and Tobias with enthusiasm and consideration. Will plan to return in the near future. Chris Williams

Highly charming place
Buittle Castle is a highly charming place and a perfect base from where to explore the area. The castle's sunken garden (with friendly local peacock), the hosts' attentiveness, and the delicious breakfast were all highlights of our stay. Recommended!

Incredibly Relaxing Experience
We had the privilege of staying 6 nights at Buittle Castle. We were looking for a quiet stay in the country with access to local gardens and castles. This property provided everything we were looking for. James, Tobias, and Tim were exceptional from check in to check out. Breakfasts were excellent and the two dinner meals we had at the castle were so much more than we expected. The meals were 5 star and served in the Great Hall. Wow, what an experience! We recommend this bed & breakfast to anyone who wants a peaceful country experience.
