This place is perfect for family getaway. So close to the beach! Kids loved all the games that are in the house! Beds are super comfortable- which is so important and the AC works great! Very comfortable space- we will definitely go back!
We came down for a fishing trip! The house was clean and had everything we needed. It was in a great location for us because it was close to a boat ramp and a restaurant. The fishing in the area is always good and the bite was on! Thanks for letting us stay.
We loved this house! It was very clean, had lots of seating indoors and out for our group, confortable beds, and one of the best-stocked kitchens we have had in a vacation rental. We appreciated the attention to small details like labelled light switches, reading lamps in the bedrooms, spices in the kitchen, and laundry detergent by the washer. The house is super close to the beach, and we appreciated that there were plenty of beach chairs and even a couple of boogie boards for our use. The neighborhood is very quiet and safe, and David is an excellent communicator. Overall, we had a wonderful week, and we all agreed that we would happily return another time.
Adorably vintage with new, clean bathtubs and super comfortable mattresses. We rented a golf cart but the beach was such a close and easy walk we didn’t even bother driving it there most days. The kitchen had all that we needed to stay home and cook most nights and the open floor plan in the kitchen/living room was perfect for cooking, eating, and spending time together. It was everyone’s first time at Oak Island but I would definitely visit again and would rent this house again as well!
Both us and our teens loved this charming beach cottage. We all loved the overall vibe of the home and appreciated the artistic choices. It was a quick walk to the beach, 3-4 minutes tops. As far as amenities go, basically every need was met. I have stayed at enough VRBOs to know when an owner has tried to meet those smaller, everyday needs and these guys are on top of it. The tiki area is so charming, the outdoor shower is great, and just so you know the laundry is below the house as well, that is also where a menagerie of beach gear lives. Beds were comfy with different weight blankets available if needed. Water pressure was awesome too. The island in the kitchen was exactly what we needed for family meals. The following are NOT negatives at all, just notes for the owner to follow up with; the awesomely vintage blender is unfortunately broken (the plastic that should catch the spinner is broke), your front screen door is having an issue catching and staying closed (we simply locked it to prevent any further damage and used the sliding door), and I never did find the crockpot (but the stove worked fantastically). Thank you so much for sharing your home with us! This was one of the best family vacations ever!
We timed it. Literally a 3 and half minute walk to the beach. It is an older home but had everything we needed. The keypad lock was a little tricky...not a fan. Bonus:. Hulu on tv..back deck and front deck.
The location and layout of the home was perfect. Plenty of linens and extra blankets for everyone. Love the 70s decor, so super cute. Plenty of kitchen stuff, beach toys and chairs for everyone. Also it was really nice that all the basics were stocked for our whole stay. We will definitely be returning to this property!
The house was clean and well stocked with basics. A 5 min walk to the ocean or a boat launch in the inter coastal.
We visited with our 2 young kids (3&5) for a spring getaway. Plenty of beach gear at the house and lots of room to spread out during the visit.
Owner was responsive and had done a lot of work on the property.
Really loved the W. Dolphin location, retro decor, and large fron deck!

Liked: Check-in, communication, location
Disliked: Cleanliness, listing accuracy
Disappointed
Good location, but the cockroaches, lack of outlets in the bathrooms, stained upholstery, leaking faucets, broken blinds, dirty oven, and coffee pot, old appliances that were too hot or too cold, shower doors that come off, sticky front door, etc. makes this a no go until it is renovated has exterminators and is updated. Oh, and did I mention that when someone is walking in the house, if feels like a small earthquake is happening?
We had a great week in a nice home . We were 6 and it was just right for us. The weather was hot and the ac was nice and cool. Will like to stay here again.
We did a long weekend at this property with 4 adults, 1 teen and two kids - it was great! The house is laid out really well and there is no waste space. It had everything we needed for the weekend, super well stocked. It was a quick 5 minute walk to the beach and we really enjoyed the outdoor shower. Recommend!
Great house that had everything we needed inside and outside for the beach.

Excellent all around
Home had toys for kids, umbrellas, chairs, and full kitchen. All the small things were there. You can tell they took time to think about what families needed.

Perfect Location, Great Little House
Such a nice place. Well stocked with all the things you need for your stay at the beach including beach gear and toys. Inside the two queen beds were quite comfortable. The midcentury mod design scheme was lovely. Owner David was super easy to communicate with, always a bonus.

Summer vacation
Small Retro home within a five minute walk to the beach. We were here for the beach, so the house was just a place to sleep and eat. The house was clean, the water was hot and the air conditioning worked great. Retro stove worked fine. David was quick to answer any questions we had.

About the host
Hosted by David Laughlin
I have lived in Asheville since 2000 and started visiting Oak Island around that time.
Why they chose this property
I am a mid-century modern fan and wanted a place with an older beach house feel. The walk-able uncrowded beach, sound access, lack of traffic, and laid-back feel of the west end of the island were an added bonus.
What makes this property unique
Access to both the beach and sound within walking distance.
