Pino & Caroline restored it from a ruin that had been empty for over 30 years. Drawn by the peacefulness of the place, the 360 degree views and the surrounding vineyards and olive groves, you will often find them there busy gardening and ready to welcome you.

TUSCANY: within 100km / 60m
AREZZO (30mins) Our Provincial capital and a charming medieval centre with a lovely cathedral and many antique shops. The Legend of the True Cross frescos, masterpiece of Piero della Francesca are in the Basilica of San Francesco. Arezzo was also the birthplace of painter, architect and biographer Giorgio Vasari who gave his name to the elegant portico on Arezzo’s Piazza Grande.
MONTEPULCIANO (30mins) One of the best-preserved hill towns of Italy. Wine & Cooking of this town are well known all over the world. Much to see. Great visit. Taste the Vino Nobile di Montepulciano.
PIENZA (45mins) Overlooks the Val D’Orcia. It was the birthplace of Pope Pius II Piccolomini who endeavoured to create an “ideal city” of the tiny town of Corsignano. There are many fine buildings and breath-taking views. The English Patient was filmed here. Pienza features fun boutiques and several shops selling the typical Pecorino cheese.
MONTALCINO (1hr) A Medieval settlement in enchanting natural landscape. Montalcino is all about the famous Brunello di Montalcino wine which can be sampled in the numerous wine bars or nearby wineries. The fortress has a wine shop too and magnificent views from its ramparts
SIENA (45mins) Exquisite Gothic walled city – perfectly preserved since it was never damaged in the 2WW. Small, manageable and pedestrian; pop.50,000. Duomo: see cathedral-library frescoes by Pinturicchio. Campo Square is the place to have coffee and people watch and imagine the Palio race taking place. Enoteca - located in the restored Medici Fortezza; stocks 1000 different wines. You can taste or buy at reasonable prices. Parking in Siena: the best place for 95% occasions is the Fortezza or Stadio - there is nearly always a space. There is also parking San Francesco with escalators into town. It is not easy to find free street parking. Beware of illegal parking.
FLORENCE (1hr 15 minutes) Capital city of the Region of Tuscany and jewel of the Italian Renaissance. We strongly suggest booking the major museums in advance. Going by train saves the problem of parking and is far less stressful and tiring in our opinion. You can park at one of the Cortona train stations and come back in the evening.

UMBRIA: within 100km / 60m
CASTIGLIONE DEL LAGO (25mins) The town of Castiglione del Lago is a large balcony overlooking Lake Trasimeno. It retains a beautiful historic centre within 12th-century medieval walls. From its Rocca, the view captures the entire lake with its islands, the surrounding hills and the profile of the towns that dominate the landscape, from Cortona to Panicale. From Castiglione del Lago there is a cycle-pedestrian path that enables visitors to circumnavigate Lake Trasimeno, some sixty kilometres long.
LAKE TRASIMENO (15mins) Fourth largest lake in Italy. Great day out, with or without children. Pretty towns all around with cafes, beaches, boating, trips to the islands. PASSIGNANO SUL TRASIMENO (20mins) is a charming lakeside town – the spot for Sunday ‘passeggiata’ or to rent a boat - and features several good restaurants specialising in both lake and sea fish.
PERUGIA (45mins) Significant traces of the city’s Etruscan past are visible and there are a number of important historical places to visit. Corso Vanucci offers magnificent stores and historical buildings & the Pinacoteca, Umbrian National art gallery. By car it is best to park at the bottom of the city in the Piazza Partigiani parking garage and go up the moving staircase to the Centre – emerging from inside the old “Rocca Paolina” Fortress. Central Perugia itself is largely impossible to park in.
ASSISI (45mins) Umbria’s best-known city and home to Saint Francis of Assisi & Saint Claire. One of the highest expressions of religious vitality of the region is to be found in the Basilica of San Francesco, which houses the body of the saint and contains a variety of priceless frescoes (Giotto, Cimabue, Lorenzetti, etc.). Pay car parks located all around the walls.
GUBBIO (1hr) High and off the beaten track, it has the most medieval appearance of the Umbrian towns. Well preserved buildings in pink limestone; spectacular countryside all around. Experience the views from the funicular to S.Ubaldo from which you can walk into the hills behind or down into the centre. To get there take the scenic drive via the hamlet of Mercatale and the Umbrian town of Umbertide.
ORVIETO (1hr) take the A1 south to get there. Ancient Etruscan hill town high up on a tufa rock plateau; superb Gothic cathedral & square, it is one of the oldest towns in Italy, famous for its white wines with lots of enjoyable narrow streets to explore, underground Etruscan ‘Ipogei’ or underground tombs. Return via the scenic route stopping at TODI (1hr) ancient hill town and perhaps DERUTA (1hr) for its world famous, prized, colourful majolica pottery.
TORGIANO (1hr) is small but is host to two marvellous museums: - the Museo del Vino and the Museo dell'Olio. Both are the private collections of the Lungarotti winemaking family, who are responsible for having put Umbrian wine on the map. Wine tasting is possible next door to the wine museum!
SPELLO (1hr) This ancient Roman spa town still features its Roman gates and is home to some splendid works by Pinturicchio (student of Perugino) in the Collegiata of Santa Maria Maggiore. Every year at Pentecost there is the ‘Spello in Fiore’ competition in town for the most beautiful display of flowers along the narrow streets, windows and balconies making this a charming spot to stop and wander.

Gracious hosts,beautiful surroundings,great location

Our stay was most enjoyable! Caroline and Pino the owners were always available to help with directions or translating! The grounds were beautiful and the garden fresh vegetables were wonderful! Great location, close to everything you need but far away enough to feel away from it all. We hope to return one day soon! Thomas and Deborah Benz St, Charles, Illinois USA

Gorgeous farmhouse

We had a wonderful week at Caroline and Pino's mill in Tuscany. Antonio and Simone were delightful, and were generous with information and recommendations about the local area. One of the key features that make this property so attractive is its proximity to local villages and shops, whilst giving you the sense that you are secluded and miles away from anywhere.

Charming Farmhouse, Peaceful Setting

Molino di Bordone is probably one of the most enjoyable places we have ever stayed. It is located in the beautiful and peaceful community of Cortona. A spectacular old farmhouse in the Tuscany Valley. We stayed for three days in the one bedroom Molinello 1 Apartment. It had everything that we needed, including a large kitchen, living room, separate bedroom, and our own private patio. We were greeted by Marianna (Caroline and Pino’s daughter) when we arrived. She was incredibly friendly and helped us get oriented to the house and the area. The yard and surrounding area was absolutely beautiful. We enjoyed our quiet evening and morning walks around the grounds. We even took a dip in the pool on one of the warm days. The location is perfect. We were able to visit Cortona, Siena, and Montipulcano during our three day stay. Caroline and Pino were the perfect hosts. We enjoyed meeting them and appreciated all the wonderful tips and advice. If we ever make it back to Tuscany we will definitely stay here again. We most certainly will recommend this place to family and friends.

Perfect!

My husband and I were looking for a place central to Tuscany and Umbria, where we could visit sites for day trips. We had been to Cortona but didn't want to be in the town, rather a quiet countryside setting was more to our liking. We chose the one bedroom apartment, Molinello. It was perfect - comfortable seating, a well equipped kitchen, a large bedroom with a private patio in back, and a washing machine in the bathroom. The unit retained all the charm of it's history, with modern comforts. Because Molino di Bordone is in the vast, flat valley, we were able to take nice walks every evening. Pino told us about longer walks that we tried and enjoyed. The family, parents and adult children, couldn't have been nicer, there when we had questions to give us ideas and suggestions, but allowing us our privacy as well. We stayed 12 nights and could have stayed longer. Loved it!

Beautiful rustic property in a great location!

Caroline and her family were very friendly and helpful! The villa was located perfectly since we had rented a car and could visit all the highlights that Tuscany and Umbria had to offer! It was unusually hot while we were there, so the pool was lovely! Would definitely come back, and would recommend to anyone looking for a great place to stay near Cortona!

The property was fantastic and our hosts could not have been better.

Molino di Bordone was a wonderful place to spend a week exploring Tuscany and Umbria. From our welcoming meal through our shopping trip to the Thursday market in Camucia, Simona was our "go to" person for everything we needed. She also makes the best zucchini flowers filled with ricotta and tiramisu you ever ate! We stayed in the Molinello suite which was perfect for us. We thoroughly enjoyed the family atmosphere, including being warmly welcomed every evening at our return by the family dogs and cats. If you are looking for a place near Cortona for a convenient location and relaxing stay, this is it.

Lovely and peaceful!

Molino di Bordone was a lovely Tuscan farmyard tucked away in the countryside. The property was lovely and Pino and Caroline were excellent hosts. We loved exploring the property and our 4-year old son especially enjoyed the trampoline and playing with the dogs. The property was located close to Cortona, so we could easily get into town if we wanted to. We definitely recommend this property to others.

Honeymoon Holiday

My wife and I were very pleased with the accomodations during our brief 3 night stay at Il Molinello. From being pleasantly greeted upon arrival to the shared dinner at a local pizza shop to the helpful advice on "best places" to visit in the region to the genuine goodbyes before our departure. The property is beautifully surrounded by mountains and although our stay was during the beginning of spring (pre-bloom) it was enjoyable to witness a few of the flowers on the property begin to bud and come alive. Our stay here was the last leg of our honeymoon. Our honeymoon consisted of 3 nights in Venice, 3 nights in Florence and 3 nights here. Of the 3 places that we stayed we both agreed that Il Molinello was our favorite. We had wished we would have booked longer at this rental property. It was peaceful and we were able to relax and wind down before departing back home. Thank you Pino and Caroline for being such great hosts and for helping to make our stay reminiscent of home sweet home! Sincerely, Travis & Julia

Best of Tuscany!

If we move to Italy, it will be here! This is an absolutely lovely, tranquil setting in the Tuscan countryside. Caroline and Pino, our hosts, were warm, welcoming, and extremely helpful. We were enthusiastically greeted by the entire family. After Pino took our luggage into the lovely apartment, we were treated a mid-afternoon espresso on the terrace. Our rooms were more than adequate accommodating two old ladies with a lot of luggage. We felt quite at home and comfortable relaxing in the living area as we watched CNN news about the Icelandic ash cloud. The kitchen was well appointed and directions for appliances were readily available. The beds were comfortable and storage space was plenty. We appreciated the washing machine, and even more the fact that Caroline brought in our wash from out of the rain when we were off touring for the day. Both Caroline and Pino were very helpful with directions and suggestions of lessor known places to visit in the Tuscan countryside. We also appreciated their concern and flexibility that our travel plans might change due to the Icelandic Ash Cloud. Everything that is written about the accommodations and amenities for Il Molinello is most accurate. We appreciated the ease of payment with checks written on US banks. If we didn't have to come home, we would still be there! We hope to return again!

Charming Farmhouse

My friend recommended this lovely farmhouse to us and I'm glad she did. Our stay was wonderful. Carolyn and Pino (owners) are delightful. They made us feel welcome and provided us with lots of information on activities, attractions, and restaurants. We stayed in the II Molinello. The room was perfect, bigger than we expected. The room had everything we needed, we cooked at least one meal each day. The farmhouse grounds are beautiful and well maintained. We felt so comfortable during our stay. We're sure to go back with our kids soon. I recommend you rent a car, getting lost in Tuscany was a wonderful adventure, we ran into beautiful towns and friendly people.

Our favorite spot in Italy!

This was our first trip to Italy (we are a fifty-something married couple). It was recommended by a friend. This is the perfect place to either relax and stay put OR to take day trips to every hilltown in Tuscany & Umbria. A great central location for both. We couldn't decide which we preferred! Turned out our favorite hilltown was nearby Cortona. Our experience was beyond our expectations, the farmhouse is so lovely and inviting, spotlessly clean, well furnished, the pool is wonderful, and the owners treat you like special guests. We originally scheduled a week's stay and ended up staying an extra 3 days! The pictures do not even begin to capture this breathtaking place. We hope all our of friends can eventually find their way to this incredible place.

Hello, I'm Caroline, born in England and 100% in love with Italy.

I love travelling and everything connected to it.

Our family is Anglo Italian. We personally welcome guests at their self-catering rental apartments at Molino di Bordone, an historic flour mill dated back to the 1600, and we live on the propriety.

Hospitality is our passion and job. And at il Molino everyday is like a dream come true. People from all around the world that just want to enjoy the real lifestyle of the destination they are visiting, living an authentic getaway!

We'll be delighted to answer all your questions, pointed out the best visits for you according to your tastes and needs.

I look forward to welcome you at il Molino di Bordone!

Why they chose this property

When we stood in the Cortona’s driveway we knew it was right for us. At the time it was still a ruin and had been empty for over 30 years!
But we were drawn by the peacefulness of the place. There were no roads nearby making it safe for the children to play freely.

What makes this property unique

We love the 360 degree views of wooded hills, olive groves and stream running through.

At the house there is the lovely big swimming pool with loungers and grassy areas for sunbathing and reading. For families with children there are soccer & volley ball nets, swings and climbing frame, bikes of various sizes and a trampoline, used not just for jumping but also star gazing at night – we have no light pollution.

We are walking distance (1km) from 2 coffee bars, food market, 2 restaurants, pizzeria, beauty salon, hairdressers, hardware store, clothing shop. We are only minutes from the historic town of Cortona and yet immersed in tranquility.

You can walk, run or bike for miles and not need to touch the asphalt.
