About this property

Beautiful Log Cabin, Stunning Lake Superior & Tettegouche view, private

Also check out our Split Rock Log Cabin near Beaver Bay! www.vrbo.com/1182301

We would love for you to stay at our Falls Ridge log cabin on the North Shore of Lake Superior! It’s a great place to create your perfect vacation.

With beautiful, 270 degree views overlooking Lake Superior and the steep hills of Tettegouche State Park, the cabin offers an awe-inspiring location to observe the beauty of the surrounding area.

Perched on a wooded hill 700 ft higher than Lake Superior, the Apostle Islands on the south shore can be seen along with the large ships going to and from Duluth. Witness spectacular sunrises and sunsets, experience impressive weather patterns and watch for falling stars and the northern lights at night!

We built this full scribed log cabin out of large white pine logs in a peaceful and remote location. Enjoy this perfect place to relax all day or return to your home-away-from-home after an adventurous day of exploring the hiking trails, State Parks, and beautiful rocky beaches of Lake Superior. Sit on the deck or screened porch and enjoy the views. Listen to the wind in the trees, the morning birdsong, or the distant sound of a waterfall. Grill a steak or have a drink while taking in the peace and quite. Read, play games, sit around a fire at night watching the moon on Lake Superior, or hike to the river and see the falls!

Baptism River and Illgen falls, with a thunderous 50 foot drop, are about 1/4 mile from the cabin and are easily accessible. Watch people rope swinging or jumping at the falls or walk up river to take a dip in a private swimming spot.

Lake Superior and Crystal Beach are only 1.5 miles away. This beach offers a less-visited place to look for rocks, listen to the waves, or take a refreshing swim in the cold waters of Lake Superior.

Kayak the clear waters of the big lake and enjoy the cliffs and rocky shoreline or bike the paved Gitchi-Gami trail.

Hiking, snowshoeing, cross country skiing trails and rock climbing routes can all be found within a 5-10 minute drive on the Superior Hiking Trail, Tettegouche State Park, and impressive Palisade Head. The trails in this area offer some of the best hiking and scenery in the midwest taking you to cascading waterfalls, through thick balsam, poplar, and maple forests and up and over steep rocky climbs that offer breathtaking views of the inland lakes, hills, and Lake Superior. No matter what season, natural beauty is everywhere!

Within 20 minutes there are numerous restaurants, gift shops, a golf course, a lake cruise, and chartered fishing opportunities. Wolf Ridge Environmental Center is a pretty and unique place to visit.

Within 40 minutes you will find Lutsen Mountain which offers the best downhill skiing and snowboarding in the Midwest! In the summer you can take a Gondola to a sweeping overlook and have lunch, take a fun ride on the alpine slides, or enjoy the gift shops and restaurants in the area. Gooseberry, Split Rock, Temperance State, and George Manitou State parks all offer site seeing, hiking, gift shops and information about the area. All the state parks have beautiful lake access and mesmerizing waterfalls. In the city of Two Harbors you will find many shops, restaurants, a cruise, train ride, light house and various other attractions.

The unique villages of Ely and Grand Marais are each within an hour's drive and offer various regional activities, recreational opportunities, shopping , and restaurants. Both of these quaint destinations have seasonal festivals, events, and music.

Lakes, streams, and rivers are abundant and offer great fishing opportunities in winter and summer.

Snowmobiling is a popular activity in the area with trails nearby.

Cozy cabin
So impressed with the cabin and that the owners built it by hand themselves! Beautiful views of all the surrounding trees and the lake, felt very private. Everything felt new and clean, and I'm recommending this place to anyone who is traveling to the north shore! Minutes from the tettegouche visitor center, and a close drive to other nature related things.

Lester & Nancy's trip to the North Shore
Our perfect four days on the North Shore of Minnesota started with the Sumac Chalet cabin. One step inside was a Wow! The craftsmanship by Marc and Sarah is next level. Then their are the views of Lake Superior, where we were treated to many beautiful sunrises. At night, it got so dark we even saw the Milky Way. Finally, location, where we were able to discover sites from Two Harbors to Grand Marais including lighthouses, waterfalls, quaint shops and even a black bear casually crossing Route 61. Definitely surpassed or expectations!

Beautiful Cabin
Beautiful cabin with amazing location and view. My 2 adult daughters and I had everything we needed for a comfortable stay. We even received a visit from a curious, but shy, black bear while relaxing on the deck one evening. Highly recommended and I look forward to another stay.

Girls' Weekend Getaway
From the moment we drove up to the property, we were blown away by the cabin, the view, the privacy, the sound of the waterfalls. Temperatures were in the upper 80s, but we never used the air conditioner, open windows and summer breezes were all that we needed to stay comfortable. The cabin is close to Tettegouche and the SHT and makes a great home base for exploring the area. Will definitely be back again.

My wife and I celebrated our 25th wedding anniversary and we wanted some place on the North Shore away from the hustle and bustle. This was PERFECT!!! Such a beautiful fortress of solitude. The view was stunning and the cabin was cozy. Words cannot do this property justice. Sarah was the perfect host. Communication was perfect and we had everything we needed. We will be back for sure.

My partner and I wanted a great escape for the weekend, and we definitely got what we were looking for. The cabin was remote, high above the hills, and just beautiful. We spent a few days there and thoroughly enjoyed our stay. Definitely would recommend this lovely spot for anyone looking for a little weekend retreat!

Cozy mountain getaway
Romantic weekend trip up north. Cozy fireplace, comfy beds, well equipped. Our only problem was that it snowed after we arrived and we were stranded for a day without a 4 wheel drive car. We found things to do in the cabin and had a wonderful time nevertheless. Thank you!

A perfectly situated home away from home for a north shore getaway. Easy drives to plenty of different places to explore, accommodating and comfortable setup, and a gorgeous view to enjoy. The craftsmanship of the cabin itself was also incredible. It met our family's needs perfectly - the kids have already let us know they want to come to this exact cabin again. Do not look any further, book this house!
This is a beautiful log home with a fantastic view of Lake Superior and the Apostle Islands in the distance. The home was very comfortable and had everything we needed from nice cookware to extra blankets and pillows. We did not spend much time on the deck or in the enclosed porch simply because of the cooler weather, but in the warmer months one could spend hours out there reading & relaxing. The house is close to Tettagouche, Split Rock and Gooseberry Falls State Parks and Illgen Falls is just down the hill. This is one of the most comfortable VRBO homes we have stayed in. Thank you Sarah and Marc for building this wonderful home.

About the host

Hosted by Sarah

Host profile image
We live in Wisconsin in a log home that we built before the cabin. We love living in the Midwest and enjoy the many activities the different seasons bring. Marc grew up in Canada and Sarah in Wisconsin. We recently adopted a beautiful boy born in April of 2018 and currently have a dog and 2 cats. Besides log building we enjoy gardening, making maple syrup, cutting wood, wood projects, hiking, camping, Alaska fishing, many outdoor activities and occasional traveling.

Why they chose this property

We have always enjoyed traveling the the North Shore for vacations. We decided to take on the adventure of log building in 2009. We took a 10 day course in Isabella, MN and proceeded to build our log house. In 2012 we were introduced to the cabin property by a friend. It is such a beautiful spot so we decided to finally own a piece of the area. In 2013 we started building this cabin on our weekends through a very cold winter. We had the logs delivered to our home property. There, we peeled them and built the walls and roof. We had the cabin disassembled and reassembled at the cabin site in september of 2014. With some help from others, we finished it in 2016. We hope you enjoy this cabin and area as much as we have over the years.

What makes this property unique

We love the logs with their individual character. The cabin is cozy and peaceful and a great central location for accessing all the North Shore has to offer. We enjoy the deck with its view of the surrounding scenery, the sound of Illgen Falls, and proximity to so many outdoor activities.
