About this property

This wonderful 6 bedrm 3 bath house & separate cottage is family & pet friendly!

This stunning historic house "The Sidney Brooks House" is a delightful choice for your family's Cape Cod vacation. Situated on a beautiful acre of landscaped grounds in Harwich Center, the private yard is ready for your fun activities and the equipment is included.

The main house boosts 5 bedrooms, two full baths, dining room, kitchen and a separate cottage has a living room, mini-kitchen, bedroom and bath. All rooms are air-conditioned.

In the main house, imagine relaxing in the expansive living room with two beautiful couches right in front of the huge fireplace. Side tables and lamps provide what you need to relax and read that favorite book you can't put down. You can also enjoy the many games provided for family competitions.

There are two huge bedrooms on the first floor. The master bedroom with a king size bed has direct access to the large main bathroom which has been beautifully updated. The second bedroom, also large, has a queen size bed. The exquisite fireplace detail is sure to capture your attention.

The washer/dryer are located in the laundry room, accessed from the first floor bathroom.

The dining room with yet another fireplace has a large table and chairs for everyone in your group. You're sure to enjoy meals prepared in the well equipped kitchen which has a brick floor (yes! that's real brick) and a history of its own. But you'll enjoy creating your own special meals and memories here. The chef(s) in the group will appreciate the Revere Copper pots and All-Clad pans and myriad Pampered Chef equipment and utensils. Or, just open the door to the stone patio and grill up your meal there and eat outside at one of the tables.

There are two different sets of stairs (both are steep as the house was built in 1750), one from the front foyer and one from the living room. The front foyer has a magnificant painted mural; truly a work of art.

On the second floor, there are three bedrooms. One has a king size bed, another has two twin size beds and the third has one twin size bed. This latter bedroom has it's own sink, as well. There is also a modernized full bath on this floor.

The separate cottage provides extra privacy for the couple with the new baby or the grandparents. Here they can enjoy their own quiet time with coffee in the morning or a cocktail in the evening. Beautifully furnished with a couch, chairs, tables, lamps and a flat screen television in the living room and a queen size bed in the second room. This is bonus space. Full size refrigerator, coffee maker, microwave and toaster oven complete the kitchen. There is also a full bath with shower.

Outside, there is an oversized outdoor shower with hot and cold water. You're sure to enjoy that when you return from one of the amazing Harwich beaches, only a short drive away.

Relax in the evening around the outdoor fire pit. Croquet, badminton anyone? The equipment is right here for you to enjoy. Or, perhaps you'd prefer to be in the hammock for a bird's eye view of what is happening. Indoor games are supplied as well.

Location is everything and this has has it all. Walk down the street in the morning to enjoy breakfast or in the afternoon or evening for pizza and a glimpse of the local scene. Walk across the street and enjoy a game of bocce (equipment is in the house) or a concert at the gazebo. Further down the road you'll be able to enjoy a Cape Cod baseball league game. Or play tennis on one of the well maintained courts. There is even a community/senior center where events might be of interest.

Right next door is the Brooks Library where you're sure to find something for your reading pleasure. The history of Harwich Center is interesting so reading about that can be entertaining.

The beaches are a short distance, by car or bike. Bank Street Beach is just down the road. Earle Road Beach and Red River Beach are a tad further. There is always a breeze, either on shore of off shore and Nantucket blocks the ocean waves so they are gentle and safe for children to enjoy. Beach chairs and towels, umbrella and sand toys are here for your use.

For the golf enthusiasts, you only need to drive a short distance to one of the local public golf courses.

The house has WiFi connection through out so you can stay connected, as usual, to your world. Streaming is also available on the televisioins.

All linens are supplied so there is no need to pack bed linens or towels. You'll arrive to an impecaably clean house where you can unload your car and be ready to enjoy a fabulous vacation on the Cape.

The beds were comfortable and plenty of them, kitchen had everything and anything you would need. The fire pit was a wonderful way to end the day. the coach house was perfect for our daughter , son in law with a 10 month. Our stay gave us so many memories to last a life time. Real Antique House
We were looking for a house that could accommodate many people, and this fit the bill. This is a real antique house, so that made it very interesting. As it has been said, the stairs are very steep, so no one who is elderly would be able to make it up the stairs. The bedrooms were large, and it was nice to have the bungalow for my son's family to stay in. The property is pretty with a nice patio and herb garden. The kitchen space is tight, but very well equipped. You are across the street from Brooks park, which is a convenient location, but be aware if there is a concert in the park, you will hear the music.

Wonderful historic home that has it all
This place is a large and well-appointed historic home that accommodated our extended family (dogs too). Location is great near park, town center, and beach. Liz is a great property manager that is more than helpful with all aspects of the rental. This top rating was earned, so I encourage you to check it out for yourself.

Wonderful Historic Property - Great for Groups!
A group of 8 of us stayed here for a long weekend while attending a wedding nearby. (All adults in late 20s/early 30s). The property easily accommodated our group with room to spare, one of the bedrooms on the 2nd floor actually has 3 single beds. We also had a dog in our group who LOVED the yard (which is fenced in, low fence - but he wasn't bothered to jump over) and enjoyed running around while the group was hanging out outside. For a historic home it was immaculate and well decorated, has modern bathrooms and kitchen, and a really lovely yard that has a grill and firepit. It's perfect for lounging around together during the stay and playing lawn games. This was probably the nicest VRBO I've rented in regards to how clean and comfortable it was - which is saying a lot. The beds were all fantastic and comfortable, everyone in the group commented on what a good nights sleep they got. It was pretty cool during our stay, but each room does have a window A/C for comfort - I can imagine it getting sort of hot during warmer months. One brief item to note is that the stairs from the living room to the second floor (which is the stairs you'll use since the back stairwell goes through one of the bedrooms) are pretty steep - this wasn't an issue for us and was sort of expected given the age of the home, but something to keep in mind that could affect your group. Location was excellent, right on Main St in Harwich and it was easy to both find the property and get around. About a 5 min drive to the nearest beach and to a large variety of restaurants. Working with Liz to book our stay was very easy and she was extremely responsive and communicative during the whole process. (Thanks Liz!) Misc other: WiFi was fast and worked great, three of us had to work from the house one day and had zero issues connecting or staying connected. TV in the living room was used sparingly, but exists. Kitchen is well stocked with cooking supplies and basic seasonings. There are two grills (gas) avail to use and wood for the fire-pit. Highly recommend.

Comfortable and quaint historic home!
What a wonderful stay we had at the Sidney Brooks house! We had some unforeseen circumstances that led us to be without a place to stay on the Cape while on an extended family vacation (six adults, a preschooler, a baby, and a dog!). We couldn't believe our luck that this home was available and we were accommodated so quickly and thoughtfully. Our request was answered within minutes, and we were even able to check in early given our circumstances. When the cable went out briefly and when we accidentally blew a fuse during our stay, the hosts handled it immediately and kindly. The house is a gorgeous historic home located in the lovely Harwich town center, across the street from a wonderful town park with access to the bike trail (and the hosts give access to a shed full of bicycles -- which we thoroughly enjoyed!). Getting to other parts of the Cape is easy, and the house is perfect for relaxing at "home" as well. We cooked, played games, hung out in the hammock and played baseball outside in the spacious yard, and enjoyed lots of family time together in comfort. The rooms are large and furnished with everything you'd need (the kitchen is small but well-stocked, minus a microwave -- understandable with old home wiring!) and the layout is nice. The stairs were a little steep for our young child (he just needed supervision) and the old floorboards had some errant nail heads -- just things to be aware of in an old house. Those are the only tiny flaws I can think of in this wonderful home. We would absolutely stay there again! We were homesick for our "home away from home" when we left!

Charming yet spacious, modernized historic Cape Cod home. The perfect spot for a Cape Cod holiday!
The Sidney Brooks house has been lovingly updated with modern conveniences while keeping its original Cape Cod charm and character. The bedrooms are comfortable, well appointed and cool. The living room and dining room are spacious and perfect for hanging out or entertaining. The kitchen small but well equipped and functional. We absolutely loved the outdoor shower and gravitated to it, despite two completely redone full bathrooms. The owners have thought of every detail and provided all the amenities (from beach towels, to linens, to firewood, to toiletries...) for making this the perfect launch for a Cape Cod vacation. The property manager was incredibly helpful and pleasant, always responding promptly, answering our questions and accommodating our requests. The home is clean, well maintained, and well stocked. The natural climate, screened windows, and fans keep the downstairs comfortable even on the hottest days. Window units keep the upstairs cold when temperatures soar. So, don't let the lack of central air keep you from this wonderful property! There's plenty of room for a large family to spread out and extra guests to visit. The home is "vacation ready"--all you have to do is pack your clothes and show up. Grab a bike and hop on the Cape Cod National Sea Shore bike trail; the bocce balls and play on the lighted court across the street; the croquet set and gather on the expansive lawn; the lawn chairs, beach towels and umbrellas and head to the beach. Laze in the hammock with a good book, roast marshmallows in the fire pit, or sit on the patio. Bike or drive to one of the many area beaches. There is something for everyone here! Harwich is a cute little town with lots of fun restaurants and shops to explore, some of which are less than a block from this historic house. This is a great location for exploring neighboring areas too including Chatham, Hyannis, and Cape Cod National Seashore. We had an amazing and memorable family vacation here and I'm sure you would too. Don't hesitate to contact Betty (property manager) if you have any questions. Thank you Allens for sharing your home!

About the host

We, Rebecca and Chris, are thrilled to share our Cape house with you. When we first walked in, we knew this was the right place for us.

Rebecca grew up in Eastham and graduated from Skidmore College with a major in theatre and minor in philosophy. Chris has lived in various states and graduated from Berklee College of Music as a jazz composition major.

We met through a mutual friend and will celebrate our 15th anniversary in September. The wedding was on the beach at Chequessette Golf Club in Wellfleet. Five years ago, we adopted the love of our life - Savannah. Her birth mom was from Georgia, thus her name.

Shortly before getting married, we started our own computer program development company "infrared5".

Rebecca's favorite part of the business is the creative tasks using her graphic design experience. The house reflects her amazing eye for color and detail. Chris is a "magician" in the kitchen with a flair for cocktail making. You'll enjoy the various glasses for anything from a glass of wine to a martini.

We are serious dog lovers and welcome your well behaved and trained dog to enjoy vacationing with you. Pictured with us is Rye, our second rescued Greyhound and Hayley, an older King Charles Cavalier.

Why they chose this property

It isn't often you can experience an antique home built in 1750 in such great condition. Just walking through the door makes you think about the many others who have been here and what life was like years ago. For a unique and special Cape Cod visit, this is the place to stay.

For history buffs, you should read up on Sidney Brooks and his family and their impact on Harwich. The library next door has a lot of information about this!

Location - location - location. This house has it all! Walking distance to the library, the bocce court and gazebo where bands will perform and just a little further, to the ball field where the Cape Cod Baseball League will play.

Beaches are a short drive so load up the car with the towels and chairs (provided at the house) and choose one of Harwich's beautiful beaches. There is Earle Road, Pleasant Road and Red River beach to choose from. All are protected from the ocean by Monomoy and Nantucket so you'll enjoy a very gentle surf and always a wonderful breeze.

Biking enthusiasts will be pleased with the bike path that is just across the street. It's an easy ride to Nickerson State Park or even to Orleans.

What makes this property unique

The privacy at this property both inside and out make it very unique.

If you want private time, there will always be a place you can claim so you can read that book you can''t put down. Yet, when you want to be together, the living room, dining room as well as the fire pit in the back yard will be good gathering spots.

The nearly acre property is flat lawn with many shade trees making it a great place to enjoy after your day out and about. It is completely fenced so your dog will love running around safely. Equipment for lawn games are provided so children and those young at heart can have a fun time right here. It is back from the road so safe for small children.
