About this property

1828 Vermont Cottage Feet From The Famous Battenkill River

WELCOME TO THE HISTORIC SAMUEL BENEDICT HOMESTEAD

Located on the southern bank of the picturesque Battenkill River in West Arlington, Vermont, the historic 3 bedroom cottage, built in 1828, offers the perfect setting for a genuine Vermont getaway. It sleeps up to 5 guests, has a full kitchen, 1.5 bathrooms, and more than its share of rustic charm. Skiing and shopping are nearby, and there is fly fishing, kayaking, swimming and tubing just steps away. Additional amenities include an outdoor patio, modest WiFi, Bluetooth audio, Smart TV, record player, books, games, and more.

The cottage has sat at the edge of the Battenkill since the John Quincy Adams administration. Originally part of a much larger family-owned parcel, Samuel Benedict was its builder and original owner. He’s buried just 3 miles away in the St. James Episcopal Cemetery.

While many guests enjoy jumping into the river's swimming hole from the single lane bridge, others choose to join local artists to paint landscapes from it. In fact, American artist Ogden Pleissner (1905-1983), in addition to painting western landscapes, images of the New England maritimes, and serving as a WWII war correspondent in the Aleutian Islands, also painted the river scene from the bridge directly in front of the house in 1978. The piece is entitled “The Battenkill at Benedict’s Crossing.”

This rustic property has the genuine Vermont flavor to satisfy the solitary purist, but enough creature comforts to make microwave popcorn and stream Netflix (most of the time). We hope to be able to share it with you soon.

Cosy Vermont cottage by the Battenkill River
Vermont in the fall was on my bucket list (we're Australian, so not much fall colour there). We had the chance so I looked for a cosy cottage in the woods and found Sarah's place. It is well located on a quiet road by the river with forest on either side of the valley. Nearby are Robert Frost, Norman Rockwell and Lincoln Family places of interest. Some great walks nearby and other towns of interest not far away; Manchester for shopping, Dorset is cute and a good farmers market on a Saturday morning. The cottage is well equipped, quaintly furnished lounge, dining and bedrooms. There was just two of us so we only used the main bedroom, the bed was very comfortable. Didier, the caretaker, was very helpful and made sure we knew what we needed to know, before leaving us to it. We loved it.

Cozy Vintage Charm
Our stay at the 1828 Cottage was delightful. It had everything we needed for a comfortable get away. The kitchen was very well stocked and we made some memorably delicious dinners and breakfasts. The bed in the master bedroom was ultra comfortable and we slept like babies. A hot shower was always available to warm and soothe our bones after wintry hikes. And the fireplace—very well stocked with wood—provided warmth and a cozy ambiance. But behind all of this was our host Sarah whose gracious spirit surrounded everything. The charming eclectic decor suited the cottage perfectly and Sarah was always on hand to answer any questions and to make suggestions for our stay. So we are glad we got to know Sarah and the cottage and felt well cared for in a home that is so lovingly preserved.

Nice getaway!
We had a great stay at this home. We built a fire while relaxing in the living room. The kitchen has all you’d need. We cooked dinner and also went out to nearby Arlington restaurants as well as Manchester. Great location by ski mountains as well which allowed us to get some days in as well.

A pleasant stay at a charming cottage
The cottage was lovely with a fireplace and well stocked kitchen. The bathrooms were very clean with plenty of towels. There was a nice dining room and a living room with plenty of comfortable places to sit to read or watch TV. It was on a quiet street along side the Battenkill River. I would definitely stay there again.

An idyllic VT experience
I stayed here with my daughter and mother. Everyone had a lovely time - the house is perfectly situated with a gorgeous view from every corner. We had everything we could possibly need, playing games, prepping dinner, the cozy fireplace and walks along the river. Sarah and Brett are wonderful hosts, extremely responsive. Can’t wait to come back and spend more time exploring the area. Thank you for a wonderful stay!

This was a beautiful little place on the river tucked off the beaten path, quiet and peaceful. We loved exploring the area's natural beauty and historic sites. This would be a great place to bring a small family or a romantic couple's vacation.

Life Changing Stay
My partner and I thoroughly enjoyed our stay in the cottage. The location was wonderful and we were able to swim right outside, which was something I was looking for specifically when comparing places. The floor boards were so wide and lovely, and the details put into the space are eclectic and warm feeling. It also had a record player and records which was a lovely thought and a fireplace that gave off a very cozy feeling when we used it the nights we stayed. There was AC but we found it was cool enough to night to sleep with the windows open and the screens did a good job at keeping any bugs out. The relaxation we got up there was so peaceful that we've started looking at homes in the area to purchase. The place was just that magical.

Just like grandma's
We usually stay at my grandma's house, but with family in town for our reunion her house was full and we needed a place to stay. This house was perfect: clean and comfortable. The kitchen was very well equipped. My husband and boys loved fishing and swimming in the river right out the front door, and I enjoyed the quiet and beautiful surroundings. The nearby country store was friendly and convenient. Sarah answered all of our questions promptly and check-in was easy. We loved everything about our stay.

Utter peace. Complete and perfect rest. We were looking for a place to celebrate our 65th year and we found it here. We talked. We walked. We read. We slept. We explored. We fished. The location is perfect for all the things. WE are refreshed and ready for another 65! Book it.

Quaint cottage, great location
Stayed here for an event in Arlington. The house was super convenient and only a few minutes drive to Arlington. The view of the river from the house was peaceful. The cottage was quiet and clean. For fly fishing, it was great to stay on the banks of the Batten Kill and it was an easy drive to other streams in the area too.
