About this property

Harlech: Large house in over an acre with the finest views in Eryri (Snowdonia)

PLEASE NOTE: Bookings run from 4pm Sunday to 10am the following Sunday.

Murmur-y-Don is a 1907 Arts & Crafts style house set in just over an acre of land on the top of Harlech Cliff. The location is sensational.

This is generally agreed to be the finest view in Wales, and my great-grandmother gave the field in front of the house to the National Trust to preserve the view in perpetuity. The house has been in the family by direct descent for 101 years.

4 bedrooms, three doubles, one single, the longest bath you've ever seen (original 1907 Edwardian cast-iron), sea views from every room (except the pantry and the shower room!), atmospheric, old, quaint, a real family home. The house is 2000 sq. ft, 186m2.

Over an acre of walled gardens, off road parking for six cars, pets welcome, views to die for. BUT I'm afraid we can't take weekend bookings, or any bookings for less than seven days, and the weeks run from 4pm Sunday to 11am the following Sunday. We are at the mercy of our cleaners.

What a view…we all loved our stay at this well located property and feels very much a family home. Albeit lacking in modernity, it made up for with views and character and a very lovely xmas tree. Steep walk diwn to the s

What a wonderful break
Just got back from a lovely week in Harlech. The house exceeded our expectations on all fronts. The view out to the Sea is to die for and we spent many a pleasant evening barbecuing on the Porch and watching the sun go down over Llyn peninsula. The house feels like a home from home and goes against the normal clinical presentation of holiday homes to tell its story over the last 100+ years with family photos, relics and and antique furniture. The beach was perfect for our kids and puppy with wide open sands and a shallow gradient that is perfect for swimming. The access from the beach although steep is a few miles from the main car park so you are away from the throngs of tourists. Gwyn does such a good job as host, with open communication and was responsive to our questions both before and during the stay. Just book you wont be disappointed!

Heaps of character and stunning sunsets
Murmur-y-don is perfectly positioned with the most glorious views out across the the extensive sandy beach of Harlech. The walk down to the beach is a little steep, but totally worth it, and even after busy days exploring, we frequently popped down for another walk by the waves, or to enjoy some incredible sunsets. We enjoyed some amazing local hikes from the house, and with Coed-y-brenin MTB trails only half an hour away, we certainly made the most of this incredibly beautiful part of the world.

A room with a view
Stunning views especially from the balcony and the round room. Gwyn the host was extremely helpful and informative. The house was a beautiful time capsule. Spotlessly clean bedding and towels etc. Every utensil you could possibly need in the kitchen.

Stunning view - what a wonderful house
We, a family from Germany with three (almost) grown children, had a wonderful week in the summer in this house. What can we say: The house is something very special: It starts with the history of the house, its architecture and the loving furnishings. The location is perfect for exploring North Wales, the furnishings are complete and there is more than enough space. There are certainly more modern houses, but few with more character. Very comfortable beds and the loving and attentive care of the host are other clear pluses. If it rains sometimes: The Internet is sufficiently fast, there are games and books available, all good. The absolute highlight is of course the view: simply magical and actually priceless. The only thing that disturbs is the road that runs directly below the garden. This can be disturbing during the day on the terrace, if you are sensitive there. It didn't bother us because we always had something to do during the day. Last plus point: From the house you go directly down to the gorgeous beach: a steep descent / ascent, but worth it. Our kids used it almost every day to go swimming. All in all, a very cohesive overall experience. A big thank you to Gwyn, we will definitely be back soon. North Wales and the house have won our hearts.

Comfortable, interesting house in a fantastic position
Thank you for a lovely week at Murmur y Don. The weather wasn't great, but the house is so comfortable, with games and jigsaws, that we were still able to have a good holiday. There are interesting places to visit within easy reach and we went on the beach most days, a wide expanse of sand which we had almost to ourselves - even Grandma managed to get back up the zig zag steps, slowly! It would have been a bonus to see Snowdon, but the clouds decided to keep it covered.

Amazing house!
We instantly felt at home at Murmur y Don. It’s very cosy and comfortable and we really liked the traditional feel. The beds and bed linen were really comfortable and I loved listening to the sea and wind in bed at night! The downstairs shower is fab! Outside there was plenty of space and the balconies are sun traps, ideal for drinks - maybe more seating would be nice. The amazing Harlech beach is only a short zig zig walk down the cliff. The local curry place and fish and chip shop are recommended and the Panorama walk of Mawddach Estuary starting at Barmouth is a must do if you like walking and views. I loved this place!

Sensational house in perfect location
The house was much better than we had expected! Luckily, it was not modernised over the last years so that it has kept a fantastic atmosphere of a typical country house packed with over100 years of history in every corner. We jsut loved it from the first moment! Not to mention the marvelous views along the coast from every room! Fantastic sunsets in any kind of weather...and also the beach is fantastic. Upon our arrival there were many jellyfish, but after a visit to "Angelsey Sea Zoo" we learned that they are not harmful and so we enjoyed swimming every morning! By the way, internet access is very fast!

Beautiful home, fantastic views, gorgeous beach. Wonderful host. Pick this one.
We (4 adults and 2 small children) could not, not, not have been happier. Be sure you go up to the balcony at sunset and get a picture. Pick this house. You will not be sorry.

About the host

Hosted by Gwyn

Host profile image
Gwyn describes himself as enthusiastic, lazy, persistent, creative, fat, well-educated, pedantic, polite, greedy, gentle, prejudiced, kind, unreliable, well-meaning, curious, shy, gregarious, snobbish, confident, cowardly, optimistic, comfortable, irritable, at ease, nervous, thirsty, tired, willing, competent, unselfconscious, spry, hard-working, querulous, prolix and cheerful. His favourite word is Sharawaggi, he would like his double helix to combine musicality and common sense, he has a huge vocabulary in several languages and no grammar in any. He enjoys drinking, eating, women, reading, writing, urban walking, typefaces, follies, architecture, guitars, rugby, cricket, F1, Wales, London, the USA and Europe. He dislikes ‘features’, ‘slebrities’ and ‘communities’. He describes enjoyment as a two-bottle lunch with an old friend. He is married, with a tortoise, one mog and a Golden Retriever.

Here is the new, even more correct version of the jacket blurb from his 2005 book “The Encyclopaedia of Fonts” (Cassell Illustrated, ISBN 1-84403-206-X):

"Gwyn Headley’s comfortably blurred memories of the 1960s include failing to become a rock star (despite his group The Sloane Squares playing with Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, John Lee Hooker, Pink Floyd, the Small Faces and others) and instead discovering a passion for typography at St Martin’s School of Art in London’s Charing Cross Road. He has somehow combined a lifetime in publishing with writing books on architecture, follies, fonts and Mah-Jong; selling listed buildings, and founding the world’s first entirely digital picture library. He has spent ten months of his life at the Frankfurt Book Fair and to his eternal regret has never scored a try for Llanelli Scarlets or Wales."

Why they chose this property

This is my family home, bought by my great-grandmother in 1923. We grew up here and abroad and still use it as the family house.

What makes this property unique

Probably the best view in Wales, land of sensational views.
