Casa Frank is our Mexican home, not just a rental property. This 2 bedroom, 2 bathroom detached house with den is fully equipped for a comfortable stay. The house is in Ajijic on Lake Chapala, 30 miles south of Guadalajara,, in a secure gated community of 30 houses. It is an easy (10 minute) walk to Ajijic plaza (village square) and the amenities of Ajijic.
The house is bright, faces south and has a delightful garden, sun deck and a Mexican umbrella tree providing dappled shade. The covered patio is large for dining, lounging and BBQing. The house has both lake and mountain views. A heated (82oF) pool and hot tub are located at the community centre 50 yards down the street. Owners have the occasional no-host potluck get together on a Friday to catch up on the news, and welcome newcomers.
The house has a 2 car covered port, with one space being available for your car if you drive to the house. If you don't have a car, walking is the normal way of getting around in Ajijic. If you go grocery shopping at Walmart or SuperLake in the neighbouring village of San Antonio Tlayacapan without a car, a bus ride costs 5 pesos (33 UScents) and a taxi 60 pesos (3.3 USD), all very inexpensive.
As to restaurants, the Lake Chapala tourist guide listed 56 restaurants at last look ! Not many offer only Mexican dishes, so North American dishes are readily available. Mexican cooks do a great job on traditional North American dishes. Quite a few restaurants have one day a week that they offer a special, price and dish and these are very popular so an advance reservation is advisable.
Expats at lakeside enjoy a very rich intellectual and artistic life. The local centre of events for expats is the Lake Chapala Society. Events include local theatre, viva Musica outings to. Guadalajara to see opera, concerts broadcast from New York and London. There are 3 local theatres with shows put on regularly at the Little Theatre, the Naked Stage and Bravo, using local talent of which there is plenty. Participate ! I do.
Expats at Lake Chapala are a friendly and interesting lot. The majority are Canadians and Americans who have ended up in Ajijic after having had diverse interesting lives and want to live in a place that offers a 12 month enjoyable life, and a very agreeable climate. Lake Chapala has the top rated year round climate in the world.
PLEASE NOTE: Contrary to the rental rate shown in the Rate section of this listing, the house is rented in equivalent US Dollars not Canadian Dollars. All real estate transactions, whether buying or renting in this area, are transacted in US Dollars The current summer rental rate is USD 1200 per month.
PLEASE NOTE: Your booking is not firm with me until I have received 2 satisfactory rent references preferably at Lakeside Chapala and you have signed and accepted my rental agreement. I can send my rental agreement to you by email.

About the host
Hosted by owner/property manager Frank Watson

I was born a Brit, lived 19 years in South Africa, brought my family to Canada, first visited Ajijic in 1995 and decided one day I would spend my winters here. I grew tired of renting under-equipped properties each year, I found this house in the condo I wanted to live in and bought it.
An engineer by training and a long time traveller starting with hitchhiking around Southern Africa and back to England after university.

Why they chose this property
This house suits my needs perfectly as to size, features, location and of course climate.
What makes this property unique
A gated community condo is of course secure. The previous owner of my house made doubly sure by adding slidable and lockable steel grids so that you need a welding torch to break in. Probably unnecessary but we do you use them when we leave the house.
