There is excellent walking and cycling from the doorstep and one of the highlights is High Cup Nick which is a spectacular geological feature and walkers are rewarded with an amazing view along the Eden Valley to the Lakeland fells. The ancient, attractive market town of Appleby, 3 miles, stands on the River Eden and is on the famous and scenic Carlisle to Settle train line. Dufton provides a good base from which to explore the contrasting but equally beautiful Lakes and Dales National Parks. The Scottish border and Hadrian’s Wall are also an easy, pretty drive away.
