My family and I enjoyed staying in this house because of its charm and history. It had so many beautiful antiques (so we were careful with the toddler) and the house itself was from the 1800s. The air conditioning worked well, and the were enough comfortable bedrooms and bathrooms for our group. The best part for me was the gorgeous grounds right on the peaceful water!
A group of friends rented this property for the weekend to ride Le Tour de Shore bike ride which started in Onacock. The screened in back porch was awesome. The kitchen had everything we needed to cook in. Plenty of rooms for the six of us. Lovely setting. No issues with check -in.
This was the perfect house for our group. It was definitely an older home, with lots of antiques and a lot of character. It could’ve been slightly cleaner. Also of the space was occupied with owners things which tended to clutter and make it hard to make use of all the space for fear of disrupting owners things. There was mail in kitchen, dressers were full. It felt like we had stepped into a lived in house as guests. The bathroom was well stocked, the bathrooms and kitchen were very clean, the antique carpets needed a cleaning. The outdoor space was amazing, we didn’t get a chance to use the canoe, but wish we did! We would definitely stay again.

Beautiful 19th (?) century manor-type house that sits on a tidal creek with wonderful views and spectacularly landscaped grounds. Inside is very warm, inviting and comfortable. Downsides are are a smallish kitchen, terrible wifi (which the owner acknowledges in the description and is looking to fix) and at least one lumpy bed. The 6th BR doesn't work well since it is hot and doesn't have direct access to a bathroom. Those drawbacks are way overshadowed by the character of the place. I've rented this place 4 or 5 times and will do so again. It's wonderful.
Sycamore Bend is a beautiful and historic property overlooking an inlet off of the Chesapeake Bay. The house is extremely comfortable and spacious, and every room contains interesting historical objects and fine antique furniture. Cellular service is a bit iffy, but that is part of its charm and very relaxing atmosphere - fewer phone calls! The owner was a pleasure to work with, and we hope to stay there again someday.
Spent a long weekend at Sycamore Bend with extended family, it was perfect! Had everything we needed for a fun & relaxing time. The decor & furnishings were gorgeous! Communication with host was always easy, check-in was a breeze. Loved that there was a land-line phone as cell service in the area was almost non-existent. Plenty of room to gather as a family, or to find a quiet space to read. Thanks for allowing our family to enjoy your gorgeous home, look forward to returning!

This home was truly remarkable. More than enough space with a fully kitted kitchen, we could not have been happier with our choice. Please know that ESVA is rural with spotty internet service. The house has WiFi comparable to what it is like as a true resident of the area but having numerous devices all trying to do something at the same time may not work.
We enjoyed a week at this property. It is very historic and is decorated with very old and interesting furnishings. The beds were very comfortable and the sun room was very nice to eat our meals and take in the view of the water. Our only complaint would be that the internet was not very dependable and the tv was very small and not positioned for many people to watch. The property is beautiful though and we enjoyed sitting outside under the canopy of trees.
Everything went wonderfully well! Working with the owners was smooth, they were helpful at every turn, and the accommodations were exactly as advertised. We had a great time and would recommend Sycamore Bend to others. Kayaking, fishing from the dock, and beautiful sunsets were among our highlights. Thank you!
The history and setting of this property is amazing. You are truly transported back in time in the rooms that are period correct to the early 19th century.

Honest Review - the good and the bad
We were a family of 8 (6 young adults and 2 parents) staying at the property for 4 days. Biggest drawback was there was minimal cell / internet service - 1 bar. We had to make calls/texts from the yard to even connect. If you need wifi connectivity for computers etc, it's not going to happen as 2 of us found out who had jobs we needed to check in on. The furniture and kitchen utensils are dated and the kitchen is very small for food prep. When we arrived the house was extremely musty that we had to open windows to air out. There's central a/c downstairs and ac window units in the bedrooms upstairs but these were not turned on before our arrival which would have helped w/the mustiness given it was the end of July when we were there. There was plenty of room for 8 of us and 3 full baths and one 1/2 bath so no delays showering etc. The grounds outside were lovely, beautifully landscaped. There's a dock if you have kayaks or canoes. It's quiet and plenty of yard for outdoor games and playing - bug spray is recommended for the evenings. We were 30 minutes south of Chincoteague beach which was an easy drive and 40 minutes north of Cape Charles. There was a Giant Grocery Store and Walmart 10 minutes away but not any night life to speak of if you're interested in that. The owner, Mary, was very responsive to any emails and great to work with and I recieved my deposit back within 10 days.
The house was awesome and perfectly situated for our family get-together. We came from north and south to experience a different kind of beach trip for our water and outdoor loving family. We loved the quiet, beautifully manicured property and spent many hours enjoying fishing, crabbing, and digging up oysters from the dock and the water. Our youngest was only 7 months and he loved playing with the trees and wiggling his toes in the grass. We ate most meals on the beautiful screened porch. The history of the home was fascinating and was a treat to have access to all the old books. Our 8 year old and even our teenager loved the cool room with games and toys. They referred to it as "The Mary Poppins Room". Electronics were all but forgotten. It was a refreshing and relaxing haven that allowed all of us to recharge and reconnect. Thanks for facilitating happy memories with precious family. Will hopefully be back one day.
Just loved the historical feel of every space. We are from an area just out side of Valley Forge PA. My family lived in a stone farm house. 1700- 1800. The size was perfect for all of us, felt like home, and having the water right in the back yard was most relaxing. We all enjoyed the sounds of nature, the smell of the magnolias, and the peacefulness. We just loved it, sitting and telling stories remembering times shared, games played. We had a wedding at a local winery, the wine was wonderful!!! Yeah Chatham. Some of us had dinner at a local restaurant in town, and the crab cake dinner was delicious. Love, love, loved it. My family went home rested and happy, smiling at the pass and enjoyed making new memories, wonderful. Thank You Sycamore Bend.

Nice historic home
There were three of us who stayed at Sycamore Bend. We were just there for a quick overnight stay. The house is a wonderful waterfront historic home located just minutes from Onancock. When I had questions, the owner was quick to respond. The home was tidy and ready for our arrival. We arrived after dark and locating the front door key was a bit of a challenge but we eventually figured it out. If you have a large group, this is the house for you.

Great historic house
We were a group of 10 staying at the house for a cycling event. It was comfortable and spacious, and beautiful. We were fascinated by the historic books and photo albums. It was a truly special experience. We had a few minor hiccups, but that just happens some times. The host was extremely quick and helpful in her responses. We would absolutely rent again!

Fantastic house in a wonderful location
Our group of 8 sea kayakers have used Sycamore Bend twice and have enjoyed it both times. We like it (in part) due to it's proximity to the Chesapeake Bay, the Atlantic Ocean and the quaint town of Onancock. The history of the house is fascinating and there are a lot of historical photos and other items spread throughout the various rooms. The bedrooms and living areas are more than adequate and the overall feeling is one of warmth. The waterfront location is fantastic. The owner has been very responsive to the few problems we've had. The only drawbacks are a somewhat smallish cooking/food prep area, and the presence of some of the owner's items in the refrigerator and the drawers in the master BR. We will be using this fascinating house in the future.

lovely
lovely home & property, just what we needed for our short stay to attend my brother's wedding. my 4-1/2 year old granddaughter now refers to your play room as hers at the "holiday house". I do suggest the TV be made functional. thank you & maybe we shall see you again.
