They lie just 3 miles from the shores of Loch Leven and Lochleven Castle, the island stronghold served as a prison to Mary Queen of Scots in 1567, until her escape 11 months later. Popular with fishermen, for its pink-fleshed trout, the loch is also a haven for wildlife enthusiasts, with the RSPB Nature Reserve, Vane Farm, occupying the land adjacent. Historic Perth (15 miles) offers good shopping, restaurants and a wealth of diverse attractions, whilst Edinburgh and Glasgow are within an hour’s drive.
