About this property

Waters Edge, Exclusive Village Location

Duck Cottage is a superb holiday home in the delightful waterside hamlet of Tuckenhay, just 10 minutes from Totnes. Right on the water's edge on the tidal Bow Creek, it's one of South Devon's prime spots for a self-catering holiday. Ceiling-height windows and French doors give sweeping views of the creek – as does the private patio. Perfect for couples - with two bedrooms, two bathrooms and private parking. Tuckenhay has two renowned waterside inns – ideal for a hearty meal after a country walk.

Accommodation:

The front door opens into the cosy living room, with a sofa and armchairs, TV and DVD player. The exposed beams give the room a real country cottage feel. The far end of the living room leads into the sunroom, a lovely light-filled room with French doors into the patio garden. The sunroom and patio overlook Mill Creek and are wonderful quiet spots to read or watch the birdlife on the river. At the back of the sunroom, there's a utility room where you will find the tumble drier and freezer.

The well-equipped kitchen-diner gives the classic country cottage theme continues throughout with tiled floor and exposed beams. The kitchen window offers views over the creek and is complete with an induction hob, oven, fridge, microwave, washing machine and dishwasher. The dining table seats four comfortably.

Glass-sided stairs lead up from the living room to the two bedrooms and two bathrooms. On the first floor is the first of the two bedrooms, a beautiful room with exposed beams overlooking the water. Furnished with a superking-size bed (which can be configured as two singles upon request at the time of booking). The family bathroom has a bath and an overhead shower also with views of the creek.

Upstairs again and there's the en-suite master bedroom with king-size bed and dual aspect views over the water. The house has central heating as well as underfloor heating on the ground floor.

Please be aware that, due to the proximity to the water, we do not feel this property is suitable for young children (over 12s and babies are welcome).

Outside:

The patio garden accessed from the sunroom is right on the water and has wrought-iron garden furniture. It's a truly lovely tranquil place to unwind at the end of the day.

Parking:

There is space to park at the front of the property.

Nearby:

A 5-minute walk will take you to two great waterside pubs: The Maltsters Arms and The Watermans Arms. Sharpham Vineyard is also within walking distance Ashprington village. Historic Totnes is a 10-minute drive, as is the closest beach, Blackpool Sands.

Lovely tranquil holiday

Duck cottage was as described and was well equipped. Such a relaxing and comfortable few days. We loved sitting on the patio (or in the sun room when a cold wind was blowing) and watching the changing views of the tidal creek. Good for bird watching and beautiful scenery in the area. Thoroughly recommend as a tranquil place to get away and unwind.

Lovely peaceful cottage

We had a lovely stay at duck cottage. The perfect place for a restful break. Our only issue was parking we had two cars and it proved to be difficult. Very limited space to park in the village. If we had know this it would have made our trip easier

Magic location, beautifully equipped and presented cottage

The cottage is very well equipped with everything we needed and very tastefully designed and decorated. We loved the hamlet of Tuckenhay and the location of the cottage , right on the river, is very special. We loved seeing the river in its different moods as the tide changed, and the profusion of bird life on the river was a joy. Very helpful agents.

Loved our return visit to Duck Cottage - everything you need, and more, and in such a cracking spot . Even the rain didn’t dampen our spirits . Thank you !

A tranquil escape at Duck Cottage.

Duck Cottage is a hidden gem nestled in the picturesque countryside of Tuckenhay. From the moment we arrived, we were captivated by the serene surroundings and the charming character of the cottage itself. The property is immaculately maintained, with beautifully landscaped gardens and the river running by attracts an array of wildlife, making it a perfect retreat for nature lovers. The cottage interior is tastefully decorated, blending rustic charm with modern comforts. We were particularly impressed with the well-equipped kitchen, cozy living area, and comfortable bedrooms, all of which made our stay feel like a home away from home. The location is ideal for those looking to explore the surrounding countryside, with several scenic walking trails and quaint villages nearby. Overall, Duck Cottage exceeded our expectations in every way. It’s the perfect place to unwind, recharge, and enjoy the beauty of the countryside.

Watery idyll

Stylish and comfortable cottage in an stunning, idyllic location in rural Devon. Attention to detail throughout and very well equipped. There are beautiful river / creek views. Some of the driving in the local lanes is only for the brave hearted - be prepared to reverse back to passing places to let other drivers past. It's not a problem - but good to be aware of it if you are not a confident reverser.

Duck Cottage downsides

I’ve given Duck Cottage excellent reviews in all areas bar one :- Safety The stairs- particularly the second flight are very steep and dangerous for older people and young children. Any wobble leaving the first floor bedroom which is directly off the first flight of stairs could prove fatal. Our grownup children were equally concerned about slipping on the second flight. They had to put a child’s stair gate across the first flight outside the bedroom to help avoid an accident. The second issue was items such as the coffee machine being placed on the window alcoves which were so low that hitting your head to access anything was a certainty. Finally there is a high step/low wall behind the garden gate which makes it hard to use that entrance.

Our autumn stay in Duck Cottage

Our first time staying in South Devon and we enjoyed exploring the area, visiting lovely seaside towns, travelling on heritage railways and taking a river cruise. Totnes has so many independent shops so an excellent place to browse. Duck Cottage is homely and welcoming in a peaceful location and abundance of water fowl. Our only comment is about access to and from the cottage. We have a Landrover Discovery and did find parking tricky especially having to reverse out and would have appreciated knowing about this when booking. The picture is deceptive as indicates ample space but this is on the neighbour's property and told it's private.

Duck cottage

Sent email with details for looking into things before. The only other thing was the bathroom mirror in the family bathroom had come off the wall as the fixings were not good enough. It did not come off while we were there, but you could see the problem. Could be a hazard. It would be better if there could be a shower fixing on the wall. Not the best to have an all over wash. But all this may not be possible. Location was wonderful.

Getting away from it all

This place certainly has the wow factor! An enchanting cottage in an enchanting location .The cottage was warm and comfortable and blissfully quiet at night. A well equipped kitchen with dining area made for easy meal preparation when not visiting local restaurants. We immediately felt we were on holiday. We could have spent all day watching the wildlife on the creek or walking along it. We loved the quiet evenings out on the rear patio, beautifully lit, where we could reminisce on how we spent each day. A wonderful holiday!

Good In Parts

Firstly Dart Valley were excellent in all ways (hence 'Excellent' rating above) The toilets and bathroom were clean but the ground floor was not. The cushions on the sofa were stale. I always wear slippers inside and within a short time the soles (which were white } were covered in a brown sticky/oily substance. There were nail varnish marks in the bath, I do not wear nail varnish so not mine. All glass surfaces including the television were smeared with greasy finger/hand marks. All windows needed cleaning inside and out. There was nowhere to store our food except the fridge. The food cupboards were strewn with half consumed food and they smelled to such an extent that you would be reluctant to put your food in them anyway. The bed linen and towels did not meet the standard that one has now grown to expect for this type of cottage. We are also used to a welcome pack. There was a packet of biscuits and a pint of milk but even those we were unsure if they were for our use I fully appreciate that this is the owners holiday home but their chattels seem to be intrusive, many inappropriate things being scattered amongst the items which we assumed where for our use. I felt like an intruder. Finally it may be worth noting that the (we presume) owners of Riverside House were hostile and rude which is unusual for this part of Devon. They had no cause to object to our presence in any way, shape or form.

Duck cottage review

We thoroughly enjoyed our week's stay at Duck Cottage. The location was excellent, with lovely views of the river and hills. It was nice and quiet, with two good pubs within walking distance. We do however have the following comments:- 1. The description states that the 'family bathroom' has a shower over the bath - this is just a hand held shower head, not an actual shower. 2. The parking space is really only suitable for a medium sized car. The drive is narrow and there is limited space to turn around. 3. The stairs in the cottage are steep, something to bear in mind if, like us, you take your almost 80 year old Mother away for the week! 4. The description states that no pets are allowed, however the owners would appear to take their own dog(s). 5. On arrival, the downstairs floors were quite grubby, with grit and mud which needed a good sweep and hoover. We also picked up brown mud/dust on our socks and slippers. 6. When plumping the cushions on the sofa, a considerable amount of 'dust' was raised! 7. Some of the towels/bat mats have black marks/rust stains. 8. The oven had a pool of cooking oil in the bottom of it, and it is in need of a clean. In addition, two of the oven trays had been put in the cupboard covered in oil and with food waste on them. We appreciate that this is due to previous renters, but it would be worth checking after each let.

A very comfortable cottage in a truly beautiful location

We had a really happy stay at Duck Cottage - it is a delightful home, very cosy and comfortable. The location is amazing, right on the river. Perfect for walking and visiting Dartmouth and the National Trust properties in the area. The only disappointment was the fact that when we arrived we weren't quite sure we should actually be there to begin with as the beds still had linen from the previous occupants, wet towels were draped around the bathroom and the cottage was generally in need of a good tidy up and clean. It was also a bit cold as the heating was turned down. We contacted Dart Valley Cottages' office immediately and to be fair an army of cleaners arrived within the hour and soon had the place looking as it should have when we arrived. They were all lovely actually and left a bottle of Prosecco for us. So things were rectified and we were able to enjoy our stay. It would just have been nice (and good PR) if Dart Valley Cottages had contacted us during our stay to make sure we were happy and that everything was as it should be, after a slightly disappointing start. In fact there was no hot water apart from in the upstairs bathroom, so had we been contacted we would have pointed that out. We reported it at the end of our holiday and it had not spoilt our stay in any way, but again, in the interests of keeping the customer happy, it would have been better if we had not had to make the call. But Duck Cottage itself is just beautiful and we very much hope to return.
