Peace...

Our stay in this beautiful home was wonderful! The house was very clean and had an amazing view. The beach was only a few short steps away, and it was fun to watch the boats out on the water. Jonesport is a quiet, friendly town with beautiful views and several places to hike. We would love to stay here again!

Wonderful cottage in Jonesport

We love downeast Maine and wanted to be able to easily access the area from Schoodic to Lubec. This cottage was the perfect location between the two and in the heart of blueberry country. It had everything we needed to make our stay very enjoyable. We loved the big picture window in the kitchen where we watched the birds every morning. With restaurants in the immediate area limited, the kitchen was perfect for cooking-in with modern appliances and cooking supplies. Would definitely stay here again.

A welcome respite

After the death of a close family member Jonesport and McCollum House was just what I needed to regroup. Jonesport isn’t a bustling community, but the sound of lobster boats in the early morning, and just sitting on the deck overlooking the Reach was healing. The home is clean, well equipped and the hosts very accommodating. If you’d like to decompress Jonesport is the perfect place.

Quiet and busy, you decide

You’ll awake to the soft sound of lobster boats leaving the Reach and from there it’s up to you. If you’re into hustle and bustle head over to Bar Harbor or if you prefer quieter pursuits try a shoreline hike, or harvesting mussels on Great Wass for dinner. The hosts are attentive and welcoming and the home is well appointed if cooking is your thing. There’s nothing like being in “The Real Maine East of Ellsworth.”

Loved our stay!

We absolutely loved our stay in Jonesport at the historic McCollum house! My family of four plus my parents had plenty of room and enjoyed every morning in that beautiful kitchen! The house is updated well while keeping the history of the house intact... it felt just like visiting family! The kids LOVED the bunk room, plenty of space and the game systems and toys (both inside and outside) kept them entertained and happy on the days we stayed on-site to relax and rest. The house is in the perfect location to take advantage of Canada one day and Acadia the next - couldn't ask for better! Working with Heather (and meeting her father who was staying a short walk away) has been easy and pleasant. I would highly recommend this property to anyone looking for a lovely Maine experience! <3

What a wonderful place!

Off the beaten path, away from all of the "hubbub". This place is a beautiful two story home in a small, quiet town. We really enjoyed the view of the ocean from our bedroom and kitchen window! I am so happy to have chosen this place for our stay in Maine. It was not far from town and if you drive a little futher, you will reach the busy, tourist area of Bar Harbor. Great Wass Island was not a let down at all and I would love to go back!

Liked it

Very clean. Nice view from the kitchen and deck. A nice, well-equipped kitchen for those who like to cook. Good chairs for people who like to read. Great for people -- such as I -- who like to swim in cold water. The area -- Washington County, Maine -- is a joy for its scenery and clean air. Lots of places within 40 minutes to go for beautiful walks. What was a plus for me that might not be ideal for others? Not many restaurants close by. Plan on cooking at home, at least for a few meals.

Relaxing in a lobstering community

The McCollum House is a beautiful home in a fabulous location. The hosts were responsive to all queries and the home is well appointed. It really is a home away from home. The location is very quiet and the early morning sound of the lobster boats is a delightful way to awake. We enjoyed our stay and plan to return soon.

Such a great place with kids

We loved our stay here. The house is very well equipped, clean and very well adapted for a stay with kids with the large kids room. The view from the master bedroom on the sea and boats is great. We rented a kayak for a few days (delivered at the house) and went discovering some islands. We went every day to sandy river beach 5 min away where kids played in the sand and zven swam in the sea. The neighbours were all very nice and welcoming and the Jonesport is a nice place. Really recommend it.

The Perfect Getaway - On the bay of a working lobster/fishing community

Our family of 5 (2 10's, 1 13) found this the perfect mix of entertainment and relaxation. My parents also joined us for a few nights. The set up is conducive to older kids with an amazing bunk room located downstairs and 2 main bedrooms upstairs. The bunk room has its own 3/4 bathroom and the 2 upstairs share a bath (not en-suite). There is plenty of parking and the setting is very peaceful and the feeling has more privacy than it may appear. The rooms and sheets and beds were all super comfortable and we took advantage of the washing machine and dryer but also hung-dry our clothes on the line. The Master overlooks the bay and the breeze off the water is so nice! Some windows have been updated, while some may be original. The only small wrinkle was not all windows had screens in the other bedroom, which would have been nice. As long as the wind is coming off the water the house stays cool and the climate is very comfortable. We found the living room more comfortable than I expected from the photos, with plenty of room for us to enjoy a family game and watch a little TV. We spent the most time in the kitchen-dining room with its large picture window looking over the water, with windows that opened well to allow the breeze. The kitchen is stocked with just about everything you could want and more! It’s spacious and well laid out and everything works tip-top! There’s also a large 4-burner grill, a small charcoal grill, and a portable fire pit with all the accoutrement for s’mores, roasting hot dogs, etc! There is plenty of well dried wood available, too! Great wifi/internet, plenty of outlets and extension cords. There is also an Xbox, a Playstation, DVD players, a TON of movies, games (both digital and not) and even some toys our kids enjoyed discovering. The detached barn/garage has corn hole, can jam, bocce, croquet, fishing gear, and more! I would not recommend biking around town; it’s a small road. But you can walk the town, and over the bridge on sidewalks. They are currently (August 2020) doing construction on the bridge, so a bit noisy. It will be nice when done! There’s not a lot in the town to do/see; it’s more about relaxing. You can walk to the lobster port about 100 yards away and buy a lobster, but nobody is making you a lobster roll unless you’re up to the task yourself! : ) A short drive north in Machias is a Hannafords and Helen’s Restaurant for some of the best pies, fish chowder and fish & chips! More stops south on Rte 1. A+

Peaceful, relaxing, and clean!

Heather and Braden have a very well laid-out, well-thought-out home. I would love to have their house on the shore in Maine! Very well stocked with everything you could possibly want for a weekend, a week or a month at the beach. It was very clean, instructions were very clear, with lots of things to do. Super friendly neighbors, just can't go wrong, we'll be back, same time next year, hopefully. Thanks for being an accessible host!

Beautiful waterfront home with spectacular view!

My husband and I and our 2 boys stayed in the McCollum house for 4 nights in August. The first response from our kids after they explored the interior of the house was, "this house is awesome". Indeed it is. Nothing was left out in the remodeling of this older home. The bathrooms are very large and everything is spotlessly clean with new sinks, showers and toilets. A full sized washer and dryer is also tucked away in the big, upstairs bathroom. The towels are brand new and very nice. The bedrooms are well decorated as is the entire house. The beds are very comfortable and there are plenty of sheets, blankets and pillows. The kitchen is quite large with all modern appliances. Plenty of silverware, dishes, cups, glassware, etc. A renter will find everything and anything they need. The table has a wonderful view and sitting there in the early morning, drinking coffee while watching the local fisherman row his dingy to his fishing boat was a special treat of mine. The deck is great and has the same view as the kitchen. It was great to play games on the lawn with the harbor as a backdrop. The kids "bunkroom" had an xbox360 as well as a Play Station and much to the delight of our 12 and 15 year old boys, plenty of video games including some of the war style games that older boys like to play. There was also a nice selection of toys and board games in the closet and crafts for younger kids. There is a large, flat screen television in the living room with a blue ray player. The computer with wifi came in very handy for my husband as he did need to do some business work during our stay. The town of Jonesport is extremely quiet. We took one day and visited Campobello (Canada) and toured the summer home of President FDR. We also visited Lubec and the East Quoddy lighthouse (the eastern most point of the U.S.). The Down East Research Facility on Great Wass Island (across the harbor from this house) was great! We learned a lot and really enjoyed it. Helen's Restaurant in Machias (30 min drive) is wonderful with fresh seafood and great drinks. Worth the trip or in our case, a stop on the way back from Canada. Bay View was good and a "must visit" for our nightly ice cream. If relaxation and quiet is what you are seeking, this is the perfect spot for you. Tourism is absent unless you are willing to drive an hour or more. Be prepared to soak in the sunsets and sunrise and let the ocean breeze lull you to sleep each night.

Our Favorite Rental in Jonesport

Location, location, location - this house is located with the best view of the Jonesport/Beals Island harbor. It has a good size deck where you can sit and watch the lobster boats come and go all day long. The yard is large enough to play croquet and badminton or even practice your golf. My family had a great time playing kan jam. The house has been fully modernized and is extremely comfortable with two large bathrooms. The kitchen is very well stocked and all the appliances were easy to use and worked well. The area has two golf courses within a 1/2 hour drive, the sunrise trail for walking, biking or running, the Bayview takeout on Beals with the best lobster rolls in Maine and Massachusetts and Helen's restaurant in Machias with "out of this world" lobster stew and delicious blueberry and raspberry pies. We plan to rent this house again and would definitely recommend it.

This home is absolutely beautiful!!! You can't get any closer to the water and both Beal's Island and Great Waas Island are only 5 minutes away (in fact you can see them right across the bay). There is a Downeast Research Facility for touring on Great Waas (where you can learn all about clams and how they are being raised) as well as, the Great Waas Island Preserve with stunning views and an island hike totalling 5 miles. And no visit would be complete without a stop at the Bayview Takeout where you will have the BEST (and freshest) Haddock burger you've ever experienced (just remember to order a petite or else you'll never get your mouth around it!) If peace and relaxation are what you're looking for, this is the place. You can also use it as a homebase to venture further Downeast into Machias and Quoddy Head. This place is new to VRBO and will be booked summer after summer once people discover it. You will not be disappointed with Heather and Braden as hosts or their gorgeous home!

About the host

Hosted by Heather McCollum

Host profile image
Braden and Heather McCollum live full time in North Carolina, but love to spend time with their three kids in Braden's grandparent's Jonesport home to escape the heat during the summer. They inherited the house in 2010 and have poured their hearts into refurbishing this wonderful vintage home.
Braden is a software manager and Heather is a published author.

Why they chose this property

Braden's grandfather was born and raised in Jonesport and bought the McCollum House in 1970 from a family member. Braden and Heather met up at the University of Maine at Machias and married soon after graduation. They continued to visit the house even after moving down south.

What makes this property unique

The view from the kitchen picture window is priceless, as is the view from the master bedroom upstairs - lobster boats anchored in the reach with islands beyond. The sea breezes fill the house when the windows are open.
