Perfect bolthole with views across the marina and river

Shipwrights is a treasured little holiday cottage in Kingswear which enjoys lovely views across the marina and River Dart towards Dartmouth and the Britannia Royal Naval College. Perfectly set up as a base for a couple or a small family to explore the South Devon area. A great spot for walkers with the Dart Valley Trail and the South West Coast Path almost on your doorstep; come home from a day exploring the cosy wood burner. Parking at the marina car park nearby is included in your stay. Please note that, as this is an old building, the layout may not be suitable for guests with mobility problems. Accommodation:

The front door leads into the open-plan living area with slate flooring throughout. The kitchen has painted wooden units with an electric oven and hob, fridge with ice box, dishwasher, and microwave. The lounge area is centred around the exposed brick fireplace with wood-burning stove. It is complete with a sofa, armchair, TV, and DVD player. The dining table and chairs for three are set by the large window with views across the river.

Upstairs there are two bedrooms - one double and one single - and both have river views. There is also a shower room with an electric shower and WC.

There's electric heating and a wood burner for comfort (logs can be purchased locally).

Parking:

There is room to stop outside to unload. Secure car parking is included at the Dart Haven Marina Car Park, a 2-minute walk away.

It's important to be aware that guests will need to provide us with the vehicle's registration, colour, and model so that we can arrange the permit. This information is required at least one week before your arrival. If this information is not provided, you may be issued with a parking penalty, which will be the responsibility of the vehicle owner.

Nearby:

The shops and pubs are a 5-minute walk down the hill. At the top is one of the village shops and the café 'Moor@13'. Roughly halfway down to the ferry is the Steam Packet Inn, which serves great food. A bit further down is the Ship Inn, tucked up off to the left. At the bottom of the hill, you will find the steam train station, ferries to Dartmouth, and the second village shop and Post Office.

Charming little cottage with spectacular view of Dartmouth
A lovely cottage, nicely appointed inside and with the most fabulous views over Dartmouth and the river. A short walk to the ferry, we just left our car in the car park all weekend and used the ferries. I particularly loved the stable door, so I could look out while cooking. Good to see plenty of plugs for the inevitable phones and laptops too.

Weekend in Kingswear
Lovely location, good pubs nearby, easy ferry rides across to Dartmouth. Parking in the car park very useful. House small but cosy for a short stay for two people. Good base for coastal path walks. No DVD player although listed in details and would benefit from a little more storage upstairs, a small chest of drawers would be useful. All in all a very enjoyable weekend.

An Excellent Choice
Shipwrights is a lovely but tiny cottage with fantastic views across to Dartmouth. With the ferries, buses and the train we didn’t use the car as it was just a short break. Being able to park in the marina was perfect. Storage for the bedrooms was limited, not really ideal for three. We didn’t cook there but it looked as though everything necessary had been provided. There are plenty of places for an evening meal and we would highly recommend The Ship Inn in Kingswear. A small menu but the food was very good and the staff friendly and welcoming. All in all an excellent short break with good weather too.

Fantastic accommodation
I stayed here with my wife and father in law. We all found the cottage to be an excellent choice for a short break. There was a wonderful view from the lounge and bedrooms. It was in a very handy location, not being too far up a hill from the lower car ferry and passenger ferry. A shop, pub and small Italian restaurant are nearby too. The parking permit for the car park just below is fantastic given the parking problems in Dartmouth and Kingswear. The cottage is very clean, warm, has comfortable beds and has many cooking items in the kitchen if required. Communications with Dart Valley Cottages was excellent too. Would definitely recommend.

Great place for a weeks stay
Cottage had everything we needed for our stay. Great place to start walks from. Very quiet at night. Lovely view across the Dart. Get the multi-buy ferry ticket, for dinners & walks over in Dartmouth.

Birthday
We had a lovely week in the cottage, we parked the car and that's where it stayed, bus train and ferry was our mode of transport for the week, it was really good not having to worry about parking.

A good stay after a poor start
We arrived at the cottage tired and hungry at the appointed time, 5pm, to discover it had not been cleaned and we had to go away again until 8pm while a cleaner was summoned and did the job. Consequently I rated the cleanliness as awful. After this very poor start we enjoyed staying in this cosy cottage. We were warm, dry and comfortable despite the poor weather. It was well equipped and in a good location and we would happily return.

The location of Shipwrights was excellent close to the Marina car park included,in rental. Close to bus stop, lower ferry and with a wonderful view over the Dart The door does open straight onto the road with quite a high step I think a handle would be beneficial as we did struggle. There is some road noise this didn’t bother us but it could if you live normally in a quiet area. You can here the steam train but we loved hearing it. I think the furniture could do with an upgrade as the settee is low and difficult to get out of. There was ample crockery and other supplies. The bed was very comfortable We wouldn’t hesitate in retuning

Beautiful views
The views from the cottage are outstanding. The secure parking at the marina was good and we were less than 20m from the bus stop. Despite the COVID restrictions there was a good selection of equipment but the DVD player wouldn't work. The cottage was comfortable and well presented but in need of TLC in places. e.g. Stains on walls, damaged and scuffed paintwork, poor finish on some of the decor. The biggest disappointment was the fact that you literally stepped out of the front door into the main road out of Kingswear. Including the traffic from the lower ferry crossing over from Dartmouth. There were cars, lorries, buses and motor bikes going past within 3m of the property from 8am to 9pm. You couldn't hear the TV if the window was open. The Dart valley railway was about 50-75m away and the trains ran all through the day. Every time they pulled away from the station you got a blast from the whistle which was very loud!! The double glazing made little if any difference to the noise levels. Not surprising that the proximity of the road and railway weren't mentioned in the details of the property. If you don't mind traffic and a lot of noise then this is a good cottage for you. It wasn't for us!!!

Ideal location for Kingswear and Dartmouth. Comprehensive precautions against COVID-19.
Shipwrights is ideally located, convenient for the Dart Valley Railway, Marina, Village Stores and the friendly Steam Packet Pub/restaurant as well as ferries and many walks. Although it has no garden and opens straight onto the road, we enjoyed spectacular sunsets over Dartmouth and had the stable door open most evenings. Precautions against COVID-19 were comprehensive and we felt completely safe during our stay there. The cottage is well equipped although the oven did seem a bit erratic!

Our stay at Shipwrights
Our Autumn break at Shipwrights was very relaxing. The cottage was comfortable and well equipped. It felt a little chilly at times but we took advantage of the heaters and it soon came up to temperature, The shower was hot and the beds were comfortable. We were also rewarded with a firework display from the Naval College.

Perfect holiday
Just right for 2, plenty to do. Train and ferry less than 5 minutes away and that's for octogenarians. Parking perfect didn't use the car at all. Forgot to say bus stop is even closer.

Lovely location
The cottage is fantastically located and very well appointed and comfortable for its size, but the overriding smell of damp on arrival was quite overpowering, especially upstairs. Open windows, an air freshener, and acclimatization helped but a few constant, neutral plug-ins may be useful. The other small grizzle was the shower which, for whatever reason, would only dispense freezing cold or scalding hot water, no matter what we tried. Brilliant to have the Marina car park so close by too - and to me, this made staying in Kingswear so much better than Dartmouth, especially as Kingswear is so quiet - and the ferry so handy. The location and views would definitely encourage me to return.

A return visit
A return visit following a stay in 2010 and 2011. We love the views. Enjoyed some good local walks and boat trip on the dart. Comfortable place to stay.
