****NOTE #1: If the week you are looking for is not available on this The Hemlocks Retreat Lakewood Lower cabin please check our Lakewood Upper cabin. Cathedral ceiling, leather seating and wrap around deck with incredible sunset views from the covered porch - VRBO# 968902****

Unwind and enjoy the wonderful lake views from our fully restored and thoughtfully updated lakefront cabin at The Hemlocks Retreat in Mercer, WI. Towering hemlocks, soaring eagles, wonderful sound of loons. Mercer, WI is the loon capital of the world.

Flat screen TV in living room with DVD player. Gas fireplace to warm your toes. Just turn the dial and you are set!

Immaculate cabin just steps from the lake set on the tip of our private point. The Hemlocks Retreat is comprised of just under 400' of lake frontage. This wonderful location affords both sunrise and sunset views and the cabin rental includes your own private dock/pier.

Fully updated but maintains the feel of a classic northwoods cabin. We spent years restoring Lakewood Lower at The Hemlocks Retreat to provide a place of respite, renewal, comfort and relaxation. The Lakewood Lower and The Hemlocks Retreat grounds are completely pet and smoke-free.

If you wish to stay connected while visiting with us, no worries, cell service is excellent and we include free secure wi-fi and cable (both that work as they should!)

The Hemlocks Retreat is managed by its owners, David and Angie, who look forward to sharing Lakewood Lower at The Hemlocks Retreat and it's peace and seclusion with you.

****NOTE #2: VRBO has changed the rules so that only current VRBO guests can review our property. We have many repeat VRBO customers that book with us directly after their first stay as they feel they no longer need VRBO protection. It is frustrating for both of us but that is why you will see fewer current reviews on our site as they are not allowed by VRBO to review.

Here are a few comments from past guests of Lakewood Lower:

"Couldn't have asked for a nicer stay - only wish it could have been longer! You've thought of everything to make our stay wonderful. Thanks for the little extras...."

"Sunsets on the water are stunning."

"We appreciated the quiet, birds, the gorgeous lake, lily pads, kindness of hosts. We can't wait to return!!"

Magnificent Week in Mercer (& the surrounding area)
The Hemlocks Retreat was the perfect getaway for our group of 4 adults (two couples). We rented a pontoon to enjoy the lake, and most often we were the only ones on the water. We enjoyed the sunsets from the back deck and backyard. The cabin was spotless when we arrived. Angie met us to give us a quick tour and answer any questions before our stay. In addition, she was just a text away if we needed anything (which we didn't - she's thought of everything!). We wouldn't hesitate to recommend this cabin or the Mercer area to future visitors.

This will be a place to return to again and again.
From the initial inquiry to our leaving the cabin at the end of the week, our rental and stay was an absolutely wonderful experience! Angie is extremely attentive, thoughtful and accommodating; she took great care to make sure we were comfortable and informed about the cabin on our arrival. The cabin is cozy, immaculate and stocked with everything you might need! This cabin has been lovingly restored with modern necessities, great decor, and immediately made us feel at home! I loved how quiet the lake is and still relatively undeveloped. If you are looking for a place to really unplug, you can do that here! Having a private dock allowed for lots of time to decompress, listen to loons and enjoy some beautiful sunsets. The only downside is that I now have to wait another 51 weeks to return! I am already greatly looking forward to returning.

We got penalized for halving fun
Are experience started out great but we soon found ourselves being told we were too loud.We lost our security deposit for halving my son visit a few hours one evening. Didn't like being on camera when I am on vacation renting a cabin would not recommended this property. Mercer Lakes fish also showed to have lots of white parasites

It couldn't have been better!
A '40's typical Upnorth rental cabin that has been renewed, remodeled, redone and very nicely decorated. Probably one of the nicest cabins we've stayed in, in all our trips Upnorth. The pictures don't do it justice! Very private setting with great views - water on 3 sides. Communication with Angie was second to none - she was a great hostess and made sure we knew everything we needed to know through the whole process, including a tour with explanations in the cabin at check-in time. Everything you could want or need is there, right to the smallest detail except food.

Overall Great Experience!
We have been visiting the North Woods annually for the past 6 years and we have to say that our experience at the lower cabin at the Hemlocks has been our best vacation yet! Upon arrival, Angie meet us at the cabin and gave us a calendar of events and listing of local amenities to enjoy. Although you are only minutes from town the cabin sits on a secluded lot with peaceful surroundings. The cabin is cozy, comfortable, and quiet while providing updated amenities. If you are in need of wifi connectivity, no need to worry, I was able to connect while in the middle of the lake! With the private dock just feet from the cabin door we were able to easily access our boat or sit on the dock and enjoy the view. We look forward to returning in 2019 and have already booked our stay!

Peaceful Northwoods Getaway
Our family had a wonderful time in the Hemlocks Retreat Lower Cabin. Angie was a kind and helpful host and the cabin had everything we needed for our stay. The views are great. The location is great. Only a couple of minutes into town but you feel like your miles away. We hope to stay here again in 2019!

The best little cabin on the lake
This was our first time trying rental by owner. From the moment we got out of the car and where met by Angie. She was terrific and so detail oriented.. The cabin was so clean and had every thing a person could think of. It was just like the pictures. We would definitely recommend this cabin to anyone who wants the best relaxing vacation with a awesome view. Jake N Jill

Cozy, Quaint, Comfy!
Angie met us upon arrival and we felt so welcomed. The cabin was very cozy and comfortable. Everything we needed was there for us. We loved having a private pier so we could bring our boat. The lake was great for fishing and kayaking. We spent a lot of time on the water and enjoyed watching the loons and eagles. The Hemlock's is only a couple of miles from town which was great if you needed groceries, bait, or wanted to get something to eat, but when your at the cabin, you feel like your out in the country away from it all. There are several great restaurants right in town, but you're also close to Ironwood and Minoqua if you feel like venturing out of town. If you're looking for a a place to relax and get away from it all, this is the place! Thanks for a wonderful week in the Northwoods!

Loved staying at the Hemlock Retreats!
Beautiful cottage on a quiet lake. Angie and David are wonderful owners/hosts, who take pride in making their cottages warm and inviting for guests. Awesome lake views with gorgeous sunsets. Just a wonderful relaxing place. Location seems private but yet so close to town for easy access to amenities. Great fishing, kayaking or swimming lake. We just loved it!! Definitely one of our top favorite VRBO spots! Thanks again Angie and David for allowing us to stay in your beautiful cottage. We definitely hope to be back!!!

Very charming cabin and beautiful location!
I would highly recommend this cabin! Angie couldn’t be nicer and this is a wonderful place to stay. Very charming immaculate cabin and we had such a nice time! Gorgeous views from the cabin and breathtaking sunsets! Enjoyed seeing loons and otters and bald eagles. All the amenities and comforts of home and nice to have WiFi too for my ten year old son!! We loved fishing on the lake and caught some nice size fish. Loved hanging out on the dock and drinking my coffee in the early morning and fishing right off the dock too. This was a great place for us to recharge our batteries and we felt very well taken care of with Angie! She was super organized and attentive to us and she really cares about her guests. Thanks again Angie we will be back for sure!

We couldn't have asked for better!
The property was beautiful, and location excellent. We could see water out of three sides of the cabin. The cabin itself was charming and excellent blend of cozy and modern. Angie was attentive and very responsive to anything we needed (not that we needed much, it was so well laid out and stocked with the materials in the listing), and she gave a great tour on our arrival to explain things. It was so peaceful in the morning, watching the loons on the lake. We had our first kayaking experience there and it was great! The cabin is only a few minutes from restaurants, grocery store, and downtown, and the public boat launch only five minutes away. The dock was stable and well-maintained - we could tie our boat up to it and I wasn't worried about my children on it. In short, the cabin was everything we hoped it would be and more. I would highly recommend this for any family looking for a place to have family time but also an area with things to do.

Utterly Amazing
Everything was perfect! Angie was fantastic as a host. The house was everything we were looking for. It was right on the water, there was plenty of room to spread out, the views were beautiful from every room, and it was SO relaxing. My husband caught a ton of fish in the lake, we got to watch the otters swim in the lake along with all the loons calling to each other, and we saw the eagles flying around the lake. Even better, we even saw a small bear crossing the main road in town. It was one of the best vacations we've ever had and we will definitely go back!!! Thanks, Angie, for everything!

A Peaceful Retreat
The cabins and grounds are beautiful and meticulously maintained. Everything we needed was provided. The location is beautiful and peaceful - the only sounds other than the loons were the occasional motorcycles and live bands heard across the lake on the weekend :). Wildlife is abundant - loons, otters, and eagles were seen almost every day, and the fishing was good enough to keep our two sons satisfied.

Just what we wanted....
This cabin sits just a few feet from the water. Living room with gas fireplace has lots of windows with a lake view from each. Dining area all original vertical logs with windows everywhere. Feels like being upnorth but with modern conveniences. Our family loved it. We had our own dock. We could see both sunrises and sunsets as the property is on it's own small peninsula. Close to town but very private and quiet.

About the host

Host profile image
As my husband David and I worked to restore the 1940's resort (2 cabins now - Lakewood Upper and Lakewood Lower, once part of a larger resort beginning the 1940's) we knew we had found a special place.

It deserved to be enjoyed again by individuals and families who are looking to return to a simpler time. To enjoy peace and quiet. Eagles above, loons calling from the lake while in comfortable, updated and immaculately clean accommodations.

We look forward to sharing our labor of love with you!

Why they chose this property

My husband and I knew this property was extraordinary the moment we started down the tree lined driveway. Close to town but seems far, far away. We love that it's 5 minutes to grocery store, restaurants and more but you'd never guess when you are sitting on the deck or dock.

Original stand of hemlock trees is where The Hemlocks Retreat gets it's name. 400 feet of lakefront on our own private point provides guests the opportunity to see both sunrise and sunset views.

What makes this property unique

We have a new paved walking and bicycle trail in Mercer that extends 7 miles south of town. It connects with the Manitowish Waters trails. We encourage and welcome all silent sports fans. Our road is paved so bicycling is just one of the many activities to enjoy in Mercer, WI Loon Capital of the World.
