About this property

Contemporary cottage for 2 people (plus baby) in rural setting near to Falmouth

We are a small farm, now non-working except for a few chickens, four sheep and our friendly dog Meg. The two cottages, Rose and Bryony, were converted in 2011 from former cowsheds by the architect Nigel Stock, and are furnished with furniture from Mark Product - our expanding high end furniture business. The design is contemporary with wooden floors and fresh colours. All amenities are new and to a high standard. The cottages are all on one level with views across fields and each has a private west-facing deck with seating and barbecue. You are free to roam over our eight acres with a stunning view from the top taking in the span of Cornwall from north to south coasts.
Flexibility in accommodation is available for larger family or friends group as we have an adjoining door that will enable you to access both cottages.
For children we have a field with a swing and trampoline sunk into the ground, treehouse and lots of space to explore and make dens. We are also close to many of Cornwall s finest beaches on the north, south and west coasts. The towns of Falmouth, Truro and Penryn are all close by. A perfect base for a Cornwall holiday.

A family break

We shared our summer break this year with one of our daughters and her 3 children: we occupied Bryony cottage and our daughter and family were in Rose Cottage. This proved to be ideal as, when necessary, we each could have privacy but it was easy to open the dividing doors between the 2 properties to share time or meals together. We like the cottages for their comfort and convenience. All “mod cons” are provided and the location could not be better as an ideal base to explore and enjoy the beaches (favourites for our grandchildren) or historic properties or gardens (favourites for my wife and I). As John and Kathryn have said, there are many delightful locations to explore or events to attend. Among other ventures, this time we particularly enjoyed travelling by the Falmouth “Park and Float” ferry to the centre of town before walking to Pendennis Castle (a big adventure for the children!), and on another occasion a separate treat for us by ferry across the River Fal to St Mawes to explore the hillside sub-tropical gardens at Lamorran House. We very much look forward to another holiday based at Higher Lidgey (when time permits!). By the way, on a sunny summer’s day visitors are unlikely to find a better view of a typical English scene than by walking to the top of the lane outside Higher Lidgey, turning round and taking in the view of the avenue of trees!

Off the beaten track but convenient for so many local attractions. Cosy too, so would be good for summer and winter.

Fun in Falmouth

We really enjoyed being at Bryony Cottage. Kathryn was really welcoming and very helpful and available throughout our stay. It felt like a home from home - well designed and easy to be in. Excellent place if you want to retreat. Cottage well insulated and a regular Watership Down with all the bunnies at the back at dusk!

Lovely cottage in super area

Great cottage, beautiful area with fine views, comfortable bed though a touch firm, maybe because it is new. Kitchen has all you need, great location for seeing all of West Cornwall with Lands End in under an hour and many fine harbours to see nearby. Friendly host but gave us our space. Great place for taking our dog, plenty of walking in the fields and rabbits to chase! Falmouth expecially dog-friendly including good restaurants. This Will definitely return again in the future.

Bryony Cottage was perfect accommodation for the two of us , well equipped and in a tranquil locatio

It was clean, well equipped and warm to walk in to after a day walking in the cool wind . We wanted to light the wood burner but couldn’t justify doing so as we would have been too warm ! Piping hot water for shower/ bath . Tranquil, country setting and ideally located to explore the south coast . Would definitely recommend ( have done so already !) and we intend to return .

Lovely, peaceful holiday home

This house was lovely to stay in. Plenty of room for two people and our dog. Our only issue was that we didn't find out until we got to the property that our dog wouldn't be allowed on the furniture or in the bedroom. I feel this is something that should have been advertised beforehand as we have a very cuddly dog! Other than that, the location was lovely and quiet with plenty of things to do near by.

We had a wonderful holliday in Cornwall. One of the reasons was our stay in Higher Linley Farm. A beautiful cottage in a quiet environment. All the facilities you need for a stay and verry well maintained. We will remember the sunset in the evening over the landscape, the beautiful walks and the trips we made tot different interesting places in the neighbourhood. If you want to visit Cornwall and stay for a week or more, we suggest Higher Linley Farm

Perfect holiday cottage

This was a return visit for us, and we would love to keep coming back! The cottage is situated in a peaceful and beautiful location, overlooking rolling fields. This year we even had three sheep to say good morning to every day! It is just a few minutes drive to Penryn and Falmouth so everything is within easy reach. The cottage itself was clean and welcoming and had everything we needed for our stay. Would thoroughly recommend if you are looking for a peaceful, relaxed getaway but don’t want to be too far away from the beaches, shops etc. A wonderful experience.

Great holiday home in a central location.

We had a nice, clean and spacious cottage with a fully equipped kitchen a terrace and a small garden. The cottage is located 10 minutes from Falmouth but in a quiet but central location, from where you could easily and quickly get to all regions of Cornwall. Very nice and we will definitely book again.

A relaxing week in Cornwall!

A clean, tidy, well equipped cottage in an idyllic quiet location. We enjoyed a very relaxing week in Bryony cottage, enjoying lots of walks on beaches and coast paths and of course delicious pub meals. When back at the cottage we could switch off and relax in peace and quiet with a lovely view. Will definitely return !

Bryony Cottage, Saint Gluvias, Penryn, Cornwall

We loved the cottage. A great location set in the countryside but easy to get to other places. Lovely walks straight from the door and a secure garden for our dog. Nice and modern and feeling spacious with patio doors opening straight onto the private decking area. One of the nicest holiday cottages we have stayed at and would love to return.

Quiet Escape in Rural Countryside

We enjoyed a glorious holiday at Bryony Cottage. It truly lived up to all our expectations and more. Set in beautiful, peaceful countryside but very accessible to all the places we wished to visit. Kathryn and John were extremely welcoming and helpful. The perfect cottage for the perfect Cornish holiday!

Wow what a find ......

Bryony cottage is absolutely perfect. We arrived to a lovely welcome and a much needed bottle of wine and welcome pack. The drive up to Higher Lidgley farm was incredibly pretty and relaxing and when we turned into the driveway we were greeted by the resident chickens and sheep. Kathryn and John have everything covered, without being at all intrusive. the cottage is fabulously contemporary and at the same time very homely. So quiet, all we heard was the clock .... perfect. There was an information pack with a personal guide to walks, shops, takeaways and restaurants, the local beaches and activities. All extremely well received, even had discount coupon for The Eden Project. The first few days were glorious and the private decking was a little sun trap, perfect to use the BBQ ( being watched over by the farmers cows) ...nothing has been overlooked ... steaming hot water, dishwasher, washer dryer, fridge freezer and a log burner with unlimited amount of logs. I can honestly say, after years of 5* All Inclusive holidays, this little gem in Cornwall has stolen our hearts.

Peaceful , relaxing few days

We booked the Cottage as a last minute get away and it was perfect. beautiful location and a good base for most of Cornwall's attractions. the cottage was well presented and had everything we needed - we loved the log burner. 4 sheep out of the bedroom window, lot's of cows and chickens walking round gave it a real cosy farmy feel. The Cottage is set up a series of tight windy lanes but there is an easier and wider lane to get to it once your settled in and get your bearings. plenty of local shops etc all within a 5/10 minute drive. if your looking for a quiet base then this is a great little cottage and a reasonable price.

Wonderful holidays

We have had two fantastic weeks in the cottages. First we were in Rose Cottage an than we were in Bryony Cottage. The cottages are equipped with everything. We have used the stove in the evening. It was fantastic. In the morning we see the sheeps from our bedroom and in the evening the rabbits. Twice we have seen a fox in the evening. We have also seen a cow calving. We have seen a lot about Cornwall, but not all, so we have to come back. Kathryn was a good landlady. We have felt comfortable.

Our Kind of Cornwall Holiday

We loved the blend of character with contemporary that our cottage overlooking the fields provided. Everything we needed was supplied along with useful information thoughtfully researched by the owners, who were very welcoming and on hand if needed. Doors wide open on sunny days to the log fire cosily lit on rainy evenings, we enjoyed the garden, the sunsets and the stars. There was so much for us to explore in Falmouth and surrounding areas and the location of the cottage was ideal for visiting coves and sandy beaches. We have already planned to return!

The perfect Cornish holiday cottage

Bryony Cottage is situated in a peaceful and beautiful location. It had all the facilities and home comforts we needed to enjoy a wonderful holiday. Falmouth, Penryn and Truro are all a short drive away, and Kathryn and John provided helpful information sheets on the surrounding area including beaches, local walks, and restaurants etc. We had a fantastic week, would throughly recommend this holiday cottage and we definitely plan to go back!

Anoth Wonderful Cornish holiday

Another wonderful stay at Rose cottage at higher Lidgey - our second year and not disappointed. Kathryn the owner is a most charming host at this charming and quiet country location. We have now stayed in Bryony and Rose cottages and both are of high spec with excellent features throughout. In kitchen, bathroom bedroom quality linen and furniture from the owners furniture design business. The surrounding area is quiet and rural with opportunities to walk and or read overlooking the country. It is in easy reach by car to either coast or local reservoir. Many thanks to Kathryn and family we look forward to returning in 2018.

About the host

Hosted by Kathryn Miller

Host profile image
We are John and Kathryn Miller, we have 3 children, Rosie, Eve and Charlie.

We moved to Higher Lidgey in 2005 from east London. It had been in the same family for many years. Kathryn runs her own HR Development business and works for Falmouth University. John is a director of furniture company MARK Product. We are a typically busy family!

Why they chose this property

What we loved about this property was its seclusion whilst still being very accessible. It is a proper rural area - the real Cornwall, not a tourist honeypot. However it is so close to beaches, amazing walks and in between the towns of Truro and Falmouth.

What makes this property unique

Because the owners are on-site the properties are very well looked after and we are available if there are any problems. We also make sure the cottages are warm and cosy and there is fresh milk, flowers and wine for you when you arrive.

In spite of this convenience, most visitors won't see anything of us while you are here as the cottages have independent access and face away from our farmhouse.

We have 8 acres, away from the road, which you are free to roam (livestock permitting which occasionally use 6 of the acres).

The cottages are brand new conversions of old farm buildings, and very high specification in terms of design, comfort and furnishings.

You can rent one or both of the properties. We find some of our returning guests often do this. Grandparents or friends stay in one cottage and the family in the other. You have your own seclusion but can get together very easily as and when you want to!
