About this property

Classic Summer Cottage With Full Amenities For Your Maine Island Vacation!

Beautifully up-kept and modernized classic cottage built circa 1897. Fantastic views, and great proximity to many island activities. This 3 bedroom summer house just had a massive upgrade: full bathroom downstairs, and halfbath upstairs are brand new, and are in immaculate condition. The living room/music room sounds great with antique piano and small drumset. Outdoor shower is fantastic, and front porch has commanding views of the water.

True Magic

From start to finish, our time on Chebeague was magical. The Red House is exactly as promised. We enjoyed sunrise views of Casco Bay, evenings hearing the lapping of its water, and just relaxed during our time. Our host was very attentive, and we loved the year round community on the island as we were there before high season. We will be back!

Great rental to experience Chebeague

The Red House is not fancy. It is a 100+ year-old cottage centrally located on the Island. If you've been to Chebeague before then you know what your in for; if you haven't then prepare yourself for a rustic like experience. The Red House is right next to the Boat Yard so it's an easy walk to the Niblic for coffee or the "market" for supplies. Nice water views from the porch. Upstairs has three bedrooms and lots of comfortable beds. The Red House has a nice indoor shower which is a plus as many Chebeague cottages only have outdoor showers. Luke, the owner, was super friendly and responsive and answered all our questions and inquiries.

Red House Rocks!

What a great place to relax and enjoy a unique island experience. We had a refreshing, relaxing, peaceful visit. Luke was checking in on us through text to make sure our needs were met. He was available to answer all questions and gave us great advice on what to do, where to go, etc. it is so nice to have had a host who really cared about our experience.

Perfect Maine Island Vacation

Quintessential Maine island cottage for a summer vacation in Maine. Had everything we needed for a wonderful vacation. Hosts are proactive and available when we needed them…which wasn’t much because the cottage was well equipped and provided a classic island experience.

The magical charm of the Red House

Location was great and Luke was very attentive to our needs and informative on Island life and things to do. We really enjoyed our stay and made wonderful memories at The Red House. The Red House supplied all of our needs for a large group and even provided everyone bicycles to get around the island. I cannot say enough good things about Luke, and would definitely recommend to friends and family.

Perfect summer cottage

My family and I had an amazing stay at the Red House. It is definitely a "classic" summer cottage, in every sense of the word. Porch with a view, bikes, great outdoor shower... the list goes on. Maine island paradise, just add good weather and good times. And if there's bad weather, at least you can stay indoors and jam!

Relaxing rustic cottage overlooking boatyard with beautiful ocean view

I stayed at Luke's rustic cottage with my husband, 4yo son, and parents. We took the CTC Ferry from Cousins Island and it was actually really seamless, quick and easy much to my surprise! We carried in a lot of our food, but did order lobsters two nights in a row from the local Island Lobsterman. Luke was incredibly attentive, helpful and quick to reply to my many texts regarding Island & house questions. We did have a snafu with the fridge not being cold, but Luke immediately realized the issue and actually had a new fridge delivered the following day! Amazing! The house sits directly across from a cute cafe called the Niblic with good coffee, muffins, sandwiches and soups and easy access to a beautiful shelly beach that my son loved. The one issue was getting around the island... If my son had been older a bike would have been no problem but our only choice was to walk. Keep that in mind when booking with young kiddos. Overall a very relaxing and lovely stay! Would definitely book again.

Away From It All

We loved staying at The Little Red House and Chebeague takes you back in time and away from all cares. I hope we get to visit again. Do heed Luke's advice though and buy all the groceries you think you'll need before leaving the mainland!

Wonderful views! Great house!

We loved everything about this house with it's older charm and modern clean updates. The view of the boatyard and many of the Casco Bay islands is gorgeous. We travelled via our own boat and kept it on a mooring at the marina. We were very comfortable here and hope to return next summer. The owner was very accommodating and we loved our "on island" hosts too. Thank you for having us! - The Martins

Little Red House, the quintessential Maine island summer cottage

This review is in two parts. One review is for the island and the other for the house. I have been to coastal Maine and its islands many many times but I have never been to this area. Once you are there you would never know you are that close to the mainland/civilization. If you have never been to Chebeague, you are in for a treat. If you are looking for an action packed vacation that includes an active night life etc. this may not be the place for you. But if you are looking to disconnect and reconnect with yourself, family or nature then this IS the place for you. Chebeague is the way life used to be, offering you a relaxed environment that is hard to come by in this day and age of technology. It is an amazing healing place. This was a solo vacation for me. I chose this island because I felt that if I felt too secluded I was close enough to Portland that I could be in the thick of it if I needed to be around people. I never even thought of leaving. As a solo female traveler I felt more than safe at all times. The Little Red House (LRH) is the quintessential Maine island summer cottage. I kayaked over from the mainland, pulled up on the beach and walked my things across the street to a little slice of heaven. The LRH is comfortable and cozy. There were several recent renovations done to the house which made it even nicer. It is clear this is a treasured home. All meals including morning coffee and afternoon cocktails are meant to be experienced on the screened-in porch overlooking the harbor. It is stocked with most everything you will need. Minus a few tools, that I was able to improvise, I even made Maine Blueberry Jam. Everyone I encountered was beyond nice and helpful. The owner Luke is great to deal with, he made my experience even better. Gail the island host was beyond helpful. I highly recommend the LRH, I can't wait to visit again next summer. And last but not least, the outdoor shower. Need I say more!! Cheers, M

I'm a music professional that ended up in the Los Angeles area. I enjoy music, fine art, reading, and surfing. I love our house on Chebeague island. Since it sits empty for some months of the year, I'm now listing it on VRBO and will be the point person for the rentals for the rest of my family.

Why they chose this property

My grandfather and grandmother bought the property in the 1950's. This house is one of the early structures in this area of the island. It sits perched on a hill above the boatyard, with great views from the porch out towards the bay. Much of my extended family has spent many summers in this house, and its where my grandmother spent many of her summers into the 1980's. Much work and upgrades have been done over the years. Including new deck, french doors to dining room, and just this year two pristine new bathrooms and on demand water heater. Laundry in the laundry room.

What makes this property unique

This is a classic Maine summer cottage. Bright views and a lot of light flood the living room, dining room, and kitchen. Charming dark wood in the stairwell and cozy bedrooms upstairs. Hang out on the spacious porch, or go exploring. Walk to the beach below, or bike around the island and see all the different and varied sights and views. The Red House is situated just above The Boatyard, The Niblic, and multiple beaches just below. Biking and fishing and swimming are favorite activities. As are reading eating and sleeping. Its pretty much impossible to get a fresher lobster than the ones that come right out of Casco Bay and can be brought to you by the lobstermen themselves. There's also Second Wind Farms that has delicious fresh produce at the farm stand.
