About this property

Walkley Wood Cottage - sleeps 4 guests in 2 bedrooms

As you approach Walkley Wood Cottage through the winding lanes of Nailsworth, you will notice how the town and surrounding properties are almost hidden by the secluded woodland valley to the east of Stroud. Proudly perched on the side of sleepy Shortwood Road is Walkley Wood Cottage, a distinguished 19th-century property with a rustic golden stone that immediately casts a warm and welcoming aura. Ideally situated, this cottage is the perfect base for exploring the tranquillity of the surrounding Stroud Valleys and the wider Cotswolds, while guests are also in easy walking distance of the cheerfully eclectic town of Nailsworth. If you're looking for somewhere to totally relax and unwind, then Walkley Wood is the perfect Cotswold home for you.

As you approach the cottage through the cast iron gate and down the stone steps, you will notice a small outdoor table and chairs set down from the lane behind the dry-stone wall. Guests are welcome to sit outside and enjoy the warmth of the summer months in this compact but delightful sun trap. You may find yourself admiring the beautiful architecture and delicate Georgian windows, this cottage was, after all, built in 1852. Although the exact history of the cottage remains largely a mystery, it has been suggested that the building may have been used as a pub many years ago, which could explain the origins of the kitchen skylight. Either way, it's nice to consider that many happy memories have been created within these historic walls!

*Dogs: 2 well-behaved dogs are welcome at the cottage at an additional cost each. Please let us know if you will be bringing a dog and we will then revise your booking confirmation. The pet fee is NOT included in your booking fee. A request for an additional fee per pet will be sent to you after you have placed your booking. Your pet fee must be paid for before your arrival date.

Ground Floor

Entrance Hall:
Once you've opened the white-painted door with antique fox door knocker, you will find yourself in the neatly presented entrance hall of Walkley Wood Cottage.

Living Room:
The living room is the heart of this lovely little cottage. Set on the ground floor, it offers a warm and cosy living space and is the perfect place to kick back and relax after a long day exploring the Cotswolds. Decorated in quality Farrow & Ball paint throughout the cottage, the living room is stylishly understated, with quirky pieces of statement vintage furniture. Relax on the dark green leather sofa under the atmospheric lighting of the many lamps that line the room, and most eye-catching of all the gorgeous French brass candle-style wall lamps. If you fancy curling up and watching a film on the TV, then you'll be spoilt for choice by the large selection of Dvds you'll find on the in-built shelves, as well as a great selection of books. Lift the lid of the wooden chest/coffee table and you'll find a superb selection of board games and puzzles – perfect for a rainy day! Of course, the real centre piece of the sitting room is the log burning stove, a real treat for holidaymakers looking for an authentic country-cottage experience. Bask in the warmth of the flickering flames while snuggled under the lovely soft blankets and cushions, kindly provided by Karen to help ensure that you have a homely and comfortable stay!

Lower Ground Floor

Kitchen:
Situated on the lower ground floor, the kitchen is a very well-equipped space for both cooking and dining. Featuring a large fridge/freezer, excellent 5 burner gas hob, electric fan oven, dishwasher, kettle, toaster, Nespresso coffee machine and a vast selection of crockery, dishes and utensils, this compact country kitchen has everything you will need. The beamed ceiling and colourful rug add a touch of character to this simple space. A pine dining table seats four guests comfortably – look out for the drawer on the end of the table – that's where all the cutlery is kept! Due to the layout and nature of this property, the kitchen does not receive a lot of natural light, however, at the far end, you will find a lovely walk-in alcove with a big skylight. In this area, you will find the Panasonic microwave, digital radio, bins and a great selection of mugs and glasses.

First Floor

Family Bathroom:
A bright and spacious tiled room offset by the wooden bath panelling and mirror. Featuring a WC, washbasin and bathtub with a fixed overhead shower and usual circular shower curtain.

Twin Bedroom:
A bright, fresh and simple bedroom, this room contains one single bed and one trundle bed that can be put away. Ideal for two children or single occupancy, this room might be a little too cosy for two adults to share, so please see photographs before making a decision. Guests in this room can enjoy pretty views over the Cotswold valley, as well as a few stylish touches such as the sheepskin rug and ornate cast iron bed frame.
Second Floor

Master Bedroom:
This fabulous loft-style double bedroom boasts beautiful views from its topmost position in the cottage. With a sumptuous king-size bed (can be made up as a twin on request) nestled below the original oak beams of the sloping ceiling, this room is cosy and simple, with some lovely rustic details. Exposed Cotswold stone provides a stunning natural feature wall, while the Victorian chest of drawers and rocking chair are ideal for storage. You will find the hairdryer in the top drawer of the chest. A curtained-off hanging area makes for a unique open-plan wardrobe, ensuring there's enough space for you to unpack and relax, while the room retains a lovely snug feel.

Outside

Walkley Wood Cottage enjoys the use of a small gravel/paved courtyard at the front of the house. There is a small patio table and two chairs that guests may use for breakfast, lunch or an evening glass of wine if they wish! If you are looking to stretch your legs further, there are plenty of beautiful walks and open fields surrounding Walkley Wood Cottage.

A lovely bolthole.
A cosy cottage spread over four floors. We had a lovely week at Walkley Wood Cottage. The beds were particularly comfortable. It is very handy for exploring the Cotswolds.

Rustic but could be cleaner
We knew going in that this was an old home. However, starting in the kitchen, the open cupboards (boards/shelves) were filthy. We felt the need to wash all of the items that were stored on it. All of the surfaces could have used a better clean in the bottom two levels. The owners knew our length of stay and number of occupants, yet we did not have enough toilet rolls, dishwasher tablets nor garbage bags. Tea towels were unclean from the start. The bedrooms were excellent. The beds and bedding are very comfortable, especially the upper level bedroom could be in a magazine. There was a preoccupation with fire safety notices, yet the lower (kitchen) level fire exit door was blocked by the neighbours' paraphernalia. Location was great and we loved the walks and the hills. And close access to pubs (The George).

Characterful cottage
We had a lovely weekend in this very characterful cottage, the property is as attractive from the inside as it is from the outside. The accommodation was very comfortable and provided everything we needed. The cottage was warm and cosy, the beds were comfortable and the kitchen and bathroom facilities were good. The cottage is well located for Stroud and surrounding areas. Just two things to be aware of when booking this property; the accommodation is over 4 floors so may not be suitable for anyone with limited mobility (it was fine for us!) and parking is not the easiest so you may need to park a short walk away. Overall a beautiful cottage and highly recommended!

A lovely location in Nailsworth
A cosy and quiet cottage conveniently situated near the centre of a charming village. We found Walkley Wood Cottage last minute and were so glad we did. A friend and I attended a course at the Clayloft and the location of the cottage was ideal for the short drive. We were also able to walk into the village and try out two of the restaurants in the evening, it was a shame we didn’t have enough time for more! The rooms were clean and warm and despite staying through huge storm we both slept well. The kitchen seemed fully equipped although we only used it for breakfast. There are quite a few steps (it’s set over 4 floors) and there is a shower/bath so someone with mobility issues may struggle with the quirky design but this is all made clear in the listing. The owners have kindly provided many books, DVD’s and board games in the living room. We thoroughly enjoyed it and it completely suited our needs. Thank you.

Cosy Cottage
Nice cottage set over 4 levels. The cottage is neat and well presented. Not recommended for people who don't like stairs as kitchen is in the basement, and bedrooms and bathroom are on second and third level with living room on ground floor. Main issue for me was being just over 6ft some of the ceilings and beams were low and I had to mind my head. Also the shower arrangement in the bath is not ideal, especially for tall people. Otherwise it had all the things you need for a stay and there was good information packs etc.. from owner. Parking is a bit haphazard on the narrow road so loading and unloading needs to be managed carefully. Overall despite the weather we had a pleasant stay and would consider this location again if needed.

Not worth a penny
Very disappointing. The Cottage was dirty. The bed blankets seemed to be used. It was very cold inside the Cottage and we had to move to another accomodation. Never again. Sorry.

A lovely stay
This beautiful cottage is situated in an incredible area. Located on the side of a the valley in nailsworth it makes for great views and walks. The property is stunning with how old and homely it is. The house was tidy and presentable but perhaps could do with a proper deep clean. The kitchen had everything you would need which was really helpful though there weren’t any bathroom amenities such as shampoo or conditioner so make sure to bring your own and the same with the fire making utilities. All round lovely stay.

A comfortable characterful place to stay
The dishwasher was unusable on the day we arrived but the owner arranged for a new one to be installed the same day. We thought that was very impressive and thoughtful. We were a bit disappointed not to have the view from the house which is shown on the website.

Lovely area and town…very disappointing house and difficult location
Poor attention to cleanliness and condition especially of th3 bathroom. Be aware that this house is on 4 levels and requires lugging groceries down into the basement kitchen…not able to use the outside table and area as it was overgrown and messy.

Cosy little Cottage
We had a great time at Walkley Wood Cottage. The village center is just a short (bit steep) walk away and you‘ll find everything you need there. The cute Cottage is spread over 4 floors with one room on each floor, and steep and narrow stairs. It was okay for us, but have that in mind if you struggle with mobility issues or travel with (small) children. Our daughter (18 months) loved climbing the stairs and we spend most of our time going up and down with her. The rooms in general were nice and cosy, especially the bedroom at the top floor. The kitchen was a little dirty (especially the oven/baking tins) and as it is in the basement it was a little chilly (even in the summer). All in all we did have a wonderful stay at the cottage as the points mentioned above were minor problems for us and we felt welcome and at home.

Lovely cozy cottage
Our first time to stay in a cottage and we enjoyed our weekend getaway. The cottage got everything we needed. Beds were all comfy; we slept really well. Love the interior and the beams. And we (especially our daughter) had fun playing with the games provided. Thanks a lot!

Concern of Cleanness
In my experience cleanness is the priority throughout the entire stay, the condition of the cottage is understandable old however the surfaces of interior is considered neglected, numbers of woodlice traveling around the house, we do not value the quality and money for the stay under this condition. Additionally the shower curtain above the bath tub isn't generous enough for shower, quite narrow space while standing inside, I am very petit and this experience was not pleasant.

Home away from home
Cannot say enough about Walkley Cottage. It went above and beyond my expectations. Wonderful location. Checkin was easy( key in lockbox) and a lovely little welcome package of tea, coffee, sugar, biscuits and milk was very much appreciated after a long journey. A 10 minute walk into Nailsworth suited me and my friend to a T as we didn’t have a car. Close to the bus station if we chose to venture afar. Great hiking trails nearby. I will most certainly be booking here the next time I return to Nailsworth.

Good location, good potential but not clean.
Nice cottage and location and lots of potential but the decor and cleanliness was not up to scratch. Chesterfield sofa was filled with crumbs in the holes, dead wood lice all over the floor (and they had the cheek to ask us to remove our shoes ) not ideal for four adults but it could have been if you’d just buy a proper bed for the room with two singles instead of a camp bed… also don’t say dog friendly when the dogs were not allowed in half of the house or on your crumby sofa or allowed to poop in the yard

Walkley Wood Cottage
Beds and bedding very comfortable. Clean and everything needed for our stay. Thank you for the pint of milk in fridge! Shame about the slightly damp smell in the kitchen. A bit dark, but you are in a cottage in the Cotswolds! We were aware it was on street parking, but not aware street was so narrow and parking would be so tricky. We had to park a distance from the property.

A lovely cottage in a good location.
We loved the cottage It was in an ideal location, with great walks close by. Unfortunately, it was spoilt by its lack of cleanliness, especially the kitchen and bathroom. We wondered if the owner was aware of this fact. I noticed from my invoice, that the cost of the cleaning was £100.00, with a £25.00 surcharge for our dog, I’m sure the owner would be extremely disappointed if they had seen the lack of cleanliness. I have a photo of the inside of the oven, it was shocking, happy to forward it, if you would like to see it. I would recommend the cottage to others if the cleaning of it improved.

Lovely relaxing and plenty to keep the kids entertained
Lovely clean cottage. Bright clean rooms. Lots to do in the area. We went Alpaca walking, Eastnor Castle, Cattle Country Farm Park - with an amazing play area that kept the boys entertained all day. Only downside - property over 4 floors. Fine for us, but may not be idea for everyone. Parking is not near to the property, about 100 meters away on a narrow road.

Pleasant cottage with local walks nearby
Pleasant cottage .. with everything you need. Lovely surrounding area and local walks. Visited Woodchester Park. Haresfield, Standish Wood and Cotswold water park to walk. Things to take into account ... The cottage has very low ceilings and doorways which are not great for tall people. Very small area at front of house with chair and table could do with a bit of TLC and weeding - no proper garden. Kitchen is down in what would have been cellar with winding stairway. No parking at property which they state but really winding country lanes and a struggle to park as already full of parked cars. Makes loading and unloading a bit more tricky.
