Welcome to the Silver Street Studio; the most perfect place to rest and relax in Fremantle.
Firstly, putting health and safety at the forefront, we would like to reassure all that we have introduced enhanced cleaning protocols (ECP) when preparing the Studio for you, our guests. As usual, all our linen is washed at a professional laundry. We have also introduced a four night minimum stay period including a 72 hour space between bookings. We thank you for your understanding.
As a summer and winter retreat, the Studio is primarily an adult space, although we do have facilities for a small baby. It is spacious, stylish, eclectic and very comfortable ... It is somewhere beyond expectation; a haven for those who love art, travel, history, and being spoilt. This private, two story residence is so close to the heart of South Fremantle's culinary hub- yet is in a quiet, leafy and secluded location. Behind limestone walls and within a lush courtyard garden, the Studio is the romantic's dream and has an ambient charm which is hard to beat. It is the perfect place in which to relax, escape the pressures of contemporary living, whilst being within instant reach of all facilities, South Beach and everything Fremantle has on offer.
Originally envisaged and constructed as artists' studios, then a gallery, for a sculptor and ceramicist, 'Silver Street Studio' has been owned, for the last twenty-eight years, by another artist and her geologist husband. Today, the studios have been tastefully converted into a wonderfully creative and eclectic residence which shares the couple's own love of art and travel. Constructed from large local limestone blocks rescued from a former Fremantle church, magnificent one hundred year old timbers from 'Rob's' (South Fremantle) Jetty, the Wool Stores and other fascinating items of memorabilia, including a turret from the old Swanbourne Hospital, the building speaks to local history, contemporary art, interior design and old world charm.
On arrival, our guests enter the courtyard garden through a small 'hobbit' door within a large 'medieval' gate. In summer, this area is shaded by plane trees, a poinciana, an olive tree and a grape vine. This alfresco garden makes an ideal setting for a private breakfast, a leisurely lunch, or romantic evening BBQ.
Huge recycled, glass, sliding doors connect this leafy outdoor area to the open-plan, downstairs, living space. There is a well equipped kitchen, a dining area which looks onto the garden, and a very comfortable lounge. Beautiful rugs, art works and interior furnishings, together with the idiosyncratic architectural style create a warm, eclectic, environment to be enjoyed.
The upper Studio level, originally ceramic studios, is now reached internally via an industrial steel staircase, designed by Troppo Architects. The bedroom has a very comfortable queen size bed, supplied with quality bedding and French linen sheets. A light-filled mezzanine walkway connects this space to the bathroom/dressing room which opens onto the north facing balcony. Surrounded by trees, this provides the perfect spot for a private bath 'en plain air' or under the stars. The former kiln room, to the left of the balcony, has now been converted into a peaceful reading/meditation space.
The downstairs store room houses two bikes for our guests to use around Fremantle and for exploring the coastal heathlands.
On arrival we give you a bottle of fine Vasse Felix 'red' and Margaret River cheeses, plus a delicious hamper for your first morning and beyond....The hamper contains locally made jams, WA roasted coffee beans, gourmet teas, home-made muesli, free range eggs and freshly baked bread from our local bakery at the end of the road, and more. Please let us know if you have any special dietary requirements and we will adjust the hamper accordingly.
An extra single bed can be made available on request. We also have a cot for a small baby. However, although spacious, the building is fairly open plan and we primarily see the Silver Street Studio as a romantic retreat for couples. Please note, the accommodation is not suitable for toddlers, or the frail. It is a unique, wonderfully eclectic, architecturally rich, space that truly rewards those with creative spirit who want something beyond, and quite different from 'the norm'.
We are in an enviable location near great cafés and restaurants , a health food shop, a gourmet super market, various food outlets, boutique shops, a health spa and all other facilities. We are just two hundred metres from the Yacht Club, Fishing Boat Harbour and a short walk from both South Beach and Central Fremantle.
You won't need a car to travel around town. Everything is walkable. However, if you choose not to walk or take the bikes, the local bus service runs regularly from a nearby stop. It runs through town stopping at the railway station for those wishing to travel into the centre of Perth. But why not take a picnic, follow the many cycle tracks to quiet beaches along the coastal heath-lands!
Fremantle is a wonderful holiday destination: Our visitors can enjoy beach life and a range of available water sports. As well as having a vibrant café culture, there are art galleries, specialty shops and many historical attractions to enjoy. These include the WA Maritime Museum, The Shipwreck Gallery, Fishing Boat Harbour, the Round House, Bather's Beach Art Precinct, the World Heritage listed Fremantle Jail with its convict built underground canal system, Fremantle Markets, The Fremantle Arts Centre (the former convict built asylum) and our recently heritage listed 'West End'. A wide range of day trips are available and regular ferries leave for Rottnest Island. Whale watching is a must. All can easily be booked on line and information gathered through the local Tourist Office.
Fremantle offers a wide range of eateries and evening entertainments but you can of course, just sit at 'home', listen to music, watch TV/download a DVD, play chess or find a really good 'read' from our excellent selection of books - and relax!
We look forward to welcoming you soon!
