Super clean. Well supplied. Charming. Beds are comfy with nice linens. I stay in a dozen or more rentals a year. This one is exceptional. Just bring ice.
The property was very beautiful and well kept. Beautiful views of both the mountains and river. The furniture and hot tub on the back porch provided the perfect way to relax and spend the day and evening. The full size kitchen had every convenience needed to make cooking a meal easy. Dishwasher provided made cleanup just as easy. Two large bedrooms with full bathrooms made for a comfortable stay. We have stayed in a couple of places in Luray and this was by far our favorite.
The property is cute. Some things I wish I knew:
1) despite the listing saying in 2 places there was WiFi, there isn’t. Instructions are to go to places up the road to use WiFi. In a world where folks work while vacationing, this is a major discrepancy.
2) there are no doors on the bedrooms. There are curtains, so it wasn’t a problem for my girls trip but if you’re hoping for some private time this could be an issue.
3) the house is on well water. Be prepared to buy drinking water and for your shower to smell sulfur-y
4) there are a lot of chemicals in the hot tub - we had to let it bubble for a few minutes before entering to minimize the coughing…
On the bright side:
1) large bedroom space - lots of room to move around even w all the luggage
2) pet friendly and good size yard
3) gas and charcoal grill available for use
4) washer/dryer on site allows you to pack less
5) host was quick with responses (albeit a bit curt)
Communication was excellent.
Was told the hot tub was not in operation but a portable hot tub had been made available.
A nice touch after spending the day on the river.
House is set up very nicely for two couples. Lots of room for cooking and game night. Great location. Easy access to local trails and Skyline Drive.

Great cabin for family with teenager
The proximity to hiking, the river, and town is perfect. We enjoyed the Kennedy's Peak hike and the short hike on the backside of the mountain. The hot tub was the perfect size for our family of 3. We enjoyed walking around the town of Luray and it's Visitor's Center. We wish the fire pit next to the house was more like the pits by the river. Also, the road was louder than we expected, but the great location helped us overlook the unexpected noise. The satellite TV was nice for watching movies.
Had a wonderful stay in this lovely cabin. Great for getting away from it all (including the internet as cell reception was very spotty). The house was very clean and peaceful. Access to the river was very easy to use and very relaxing. It was a wonderful escape from the hussle and bussle of D.C.
My husband and I stayed here for our 8th anniversary! The cabin was close to Luray Caverns and the Skyline Drive. We enjoyed the hot tub and the fire pit! Had a very relaxing 3 days! The weather was perfect❤️
We had a good time at this rental. It was quiet and relaxing. Wish the cell service would have been a little better to communicate with our kids at home and my elderly mom. Other than that it was nice. Comfortable beds and clean inside. Outside needs a little attention especially the hot tub. But it’s outside.
We had an amazing time at this cabin. It had all the amenities needed. The location was fantastic being near nice fishing, shopping and had all of the comforts of home and awesome privacy yard to enjoy nice campfires and great family togetherness. We also loved the history behind the cabin. We simply Just Loved It!!!!

Nice place family love it !
It was a great experience kids love it! Jacuzzi was clean but it need some maintenance but nothing serious grills and deck needs some maintenance too not a big deal!! it just a recommendation’s ill definitely come back!! Thank you annette.
Beautiful location. Country roads, river, cabins. Cabin was spacious for my family of 5 and 2 dogs. Clean and very quiet at night. Comfy beds. Annette was great. Down to earth and friendly. No complaints. If you're looking to get away from the city life for a time this is the place to go. Cell reception is spotty but it allowed us to enjoy our time away from it all. Stores and restaurants about 8 mins away. We had a great river float down to the cabin.
Annette was extremely easy to get in touch with. Enjoyed our stay very much.

Kind of disappointed
The house was super cute on the outside! Inside decor needs updating and pictures posted on VRBO are out of date. "Leather" chairs on the deck was a little strange and kitchen chairs and patio chairs were so wobbly we thought they might break. Theatre seating at TV was kind of cool but one of the recliners was broken and uncomfortable to sit in. House was in need of serious power-washing and we had to sweep ourselves as it was definitely not done prior to arrival. I'd say the house has good "bones" but needs work. I love visiting the mountains but can't stand the egg smell of the water. I feel dirtier after I shower and wish there was a solution homeowners could invest in.
If we're being honest, there is really no river view unless you peak between the trailers across the street. We ventured across the busy road in which the house in located to access the river but the Kamp was super crowded so access was limited. This "river access was also treacherous as hill was mud covered rocks. We did venture down Page Valley Road and found another public river access point which was very nice (just wish we would have found it sooner). Disconnecting with no wifi was a nice change; however, there is zero service in this area on Verizon's network. We couldn't run mapquest or even look up phone numbers of places in Luray which was also a challenge. Overall, we made the best of it and enjoyed the time away but certainly wish things would have been a little more as described at this house and location. Oh and, the messages from the owner were thorough but way too long and thoughts were unorganized. We had to read through 3 full pages and pull out bits and pieces that applied to us. I would recommend organizing the messages a little better. Perhaps, important things to know about the house, exploring the area and what to know at check out. Just a thought. Thanks for sharing your home with us!

Peaceful and Quiet
Semi-clean although it had not the tavern feel. For as much traffic was restful and quiet at time. Nice getaway for short stay. Lived the family story so much. The Powers
The cabin did not disappoint. It was very tastefully decorated and the. Beds were so comfortable.
The cabin was cute but needed a good cleaning of cobwebs and the jacuzzi tub had a terrible dirt ring around it.
When we got there the outside hot tub was so filthy I couldn’t beleive it. The manager came herself the next afternoon and changed the water. We could not get the temperature warm enough to use it our 4 day stay . Outside on the porches is so big and nice but extremely dirty. It needs a good pressure wash all the way around . If someone would take a little time and clean up the outside and maybe plant some pretty flowers and put some pretty furniture outside , this place would be the cutest thing ever .
All in all the place was nice and by having the most comfy mattresses ever , I would stay again but I would def want to be able to use the hot tub.
The property was amazing! My family enjoyed the covered back patio the entire weekend! My husband and son fished everyday. The cabin is spacious and very well kept. Cannot wait to stay again.
Cabin was great! Very clean and nice location. Owner was very helpful.

About the host
Hosted by Annette Cates
I own the 1850's Massanutten Springs (log cabin) -restored it and now is a weekend rental... I got started in this business because I was taking care of my mother and needed additional help - although mom (Charlotte Good Kibler) passed away before completion she would be proud I know. As a single mother I just want to provide for my daughter and her future, which is why I decided to purchase the Rock Tavern property when the opportunity presented itself - my late father Aaron P Kibler would be proud to see the Rock Tavern back in the family - Uncle Abe was his brother. Aunt Lizzy was one of my favorite Aunts- always smiling! I believe 'Horses can Soothe your Soul' - if you visit Massanutten Springs website under horse tales - you will see a few of ours! If you have never ridden, take a trail ride- you will love it, if you have your own horses- you already know...RIDE OFTEN! With portable fencing we can be horse friendly at both properties. Best Regards, Annette K. Cates
Why they chose this property
I am now the proud owner of the 1947 Rock Tavern Retreat as my late Uncle Abe and late Aunt Lizzie owned, built and tended bar in the original stone tavern for years. ATK & 1947 is still in the stone walls and I am grateful to have the opportunity to get this property back in the family and we ( my daughter Jade and I) look forward to sharing with our guests the awesome history of the Rock Tavern.
What makes this property unique
The 1947 Rock Tavern Retreat offers plenty of space for reconnecting with friends and family, a couples retreat indeed. The master bedroom suite offers a King Bed, an infared modular fireplace, has a private deck entrance and a fabulous view of the beautiful Shenandoah River. The theatre style leather recliners forces you to relax! The original stone shows thru in several rooms and just accents this cabin - it is quite unique!
