A good time in Texas

The cottage was well equipped with all we needed. Lots of old time memorabilia to check out. Only criticisms would be the uncomfortable lounge/divan and no wifi available.

Just Perfect

Absolutely charming and gorgeous cottage with everything one could need. Bed was unbelievably comfortable, firewood aplenty, hot water was incredible. We stayed a week and did not want to leave. Towns people are friendly, it is an absolute gem! Jenny...Rachels Cottage is an absolute credit to you!! We will be back.

It's like going back in time, maybe a mosquito net would be a though, especially in summer.

Absolutely love the old charm of the cottage, can't get enough.

Great Weekend in Texas Qld

We had a very enjoyable stay. Everything is in order just as described. Kindling and timber for the fire was supplied. The authentic cottage was a wonderful experience again. This is the 4th time we have visited over the last 10 years. And we will again.

Loved It

My family lives in Texas, and we have found a home away from home. 'The Cottage' gave us the privacy we needed but allowed family and friends to visit. Made our trip a great one.

Heritage accommodation, comfortable and friendly

A genuine original with an architecture to go with it - smallish accommodation rooms, with a separate kitchen and outhouse, all joined up by a verandah. We arrived on a hot day to find the air con unit in the bedroom already running to make things cool. As the evening air chilled we were able to relax on the latticed-in side verandah with our miniature Poodle. The cottage is in the main street, which is neat and pretty. Shopping and services are short walk away.

Cute historic cottage

Great location, we had a comfortable stay. It's a very old cottage so it has it's quirks and it's squeaky floorboards but we had everything we needed.

About the host

Host profile image
My Great Grandfather built the cottage with his brothers. My grandfather was born there as were his brothers and sisters. My Great Aunty Ray lived there all her life, and it was a highlight for us to go and visit her. Long Weekends would often be spent by the fire, working on a project that needed to be done, chopping firewood and eating Aunty Ray's great cooking.

Why they chose this property

Although Aunty Ray never married, she was loved by all of her relatives, and friends in town. The family had helped maintain the house while she lived there, but she was in care in the hospital for 6 years, and the house needed much maintenance. It was left to 2 of her nieces, both whom had young family and/or ill health, and were unable to do the massive job of up keeping the property. It was sold for pittance after my uncle managed to stay a demolition order on it. It was bought by a couple who split the back block and put a house on it, but they also did much work in saving the house. New posts, restoring the framework of the house. It was sold in 2003 (I think) when we missed out on an offer on the cottage, and was sold again in 2005 when my husband Bruce and I were able to buy it. It took a lot of money, hours of hard labour and love to get it back to the comfortable cottage that it is now, and we have tried to keep it in the spirit that Aunty Ray would have been proud of. My mother and aunty's are able to visit and relish in the memories of many happy times.

What makes this property unique

The simple pleasure of sitting by the open fireplace toasting marshmallows and sipping port. To wake up in the morning, make a coffee and sit on the front verandah and enjoy the birdlife in the front yard, while the town wakes up, and gets busy in it's own special way.
Taking a coffee down to the Dumeresq River and enjoy the flow of the water on a hot day.
To be able to stay in a real heritage cottage, with detached kitchen and dining, whilst having to walk across the verandah to the kitchen and bathroom is unique.
