A lovely quiet cottage in nature
We loved our stay here, especially with the wood fire (wood stores topped up frequently by John), the bird life, and the beautiful location. John and Anne should be very proud of what they've created.

Beautiful relaxing comfort.
Shady Brook cottage is a delightful holiday base. The cottage is clean, well appointed and has excellent comfortable bedding. Every room has delightful views of the garden. The quietness is so refreshing. Having the log fire so easily usable topped off the friendly yet unobtrusive hosts service. We loved our stay.

Stunning garden surrounds
Shady Brook cottage was perfect for our stay. John was very welcoming on arrival. I took our two children up to Hotham each day while my wife stayed in Harrietville and it was a beautiful cottage with incredible gardens. There were plenty of birds feeding outside the cottage and a perfect base for day trips to Hotham. Thanks John and Anne.

Garden oasis
The location is peaceful and the gardens surrounding the cottage are beautifully laid out and very well maintained. As a horticulturist, I particularly appreciated the more unusual plants. The cottage was spacious and very clean. Lovely views from all windows and you are secluded from both the house and another cottage. Breakfast was on the verandah in the morning sun. The shower must be one of the best I’ve experienced in a short stay accommodation! The heating in the lounge room and bedrooms was quick and efficient. Communication was very professional. This property is one of the best I’ve ever stayed at!

A lovely weekend in harrietsville was made even more magical by the beautiful scenery that awaited us. Woke up to singing birds, ducks and a soft rainfall which made the grass and flowers look even more green. A walk through the gardens is also a must. The cottages are a delight and beautiful. The open fire certainly put an ombience feeling in the rooms. Just a truely magical experience. Thankyou to Anne and John. Regards Ken Liddicoat and Adriana Breen

Great property but small apartment.
We stayed here for 3 nights to go up to Mt Hotham with a group of 5 adults. We thought we had booked the one bedroom cottage, but there was a miscommunication and it turned out we booked the apartment above the main house. The accommodation was nice and clean, the balcony was great and the breakfast provided each day was nice, however the apartment wasn't big enough for 5 adults (2 adults and 3 kids might be ok) and we felt like we had to be careful with noise as the people that owned the property were downstairs and you could hear them moving around. Once I realised we'd booked the apartment I checked with the owner and was assured that 5 adults would be fine, but it was a bit uncomfortable. She said she didn't mind about the noise but again we were still cautious. I post this review as I would have liked to have known this before we stayed, I would have likely tried to book somewhere else given the number of people. Everything else was excellent.

A much needed break. 18mths of ongoing medical issues had worn us down! In better weather, the garden would be magic. We struggled with the wood heater, as all the wood was wet & the weather was COLD.

Anne and I (john) are passionate about Shady Brook. We believe we have develop a magnificent garden in a very unique location which we love to share with others. We are passionate gardeners, and enjoy the pristine mountain environment we live in. We are both involved in our local community and believe life is found in giving. Anne has poultry which adds to the setting as they wander through the gardens. We wanted to developed something that was more than just accommodation but an experience that will last and be shared. Anne and I do all our own maintenance and cleaning to ensure the highest standard.

Why they chose this property

Harrietville is a very unique mountain villiage set on valley floor between Mount Feather Top and Mount Hotham, the two arms of the Ovens rivers meet in the village which has kept its country feel, and is the stepping off point for endless nature based activities.

At Shady Brook we have developed our property and accommodation mirror the environment around us. The property is set in an unique spot right on the Ovens river on fertile river flat with very steep mountain taking off at the rear of our property. This has enabled us to develop lush special gardens with a fantastic array of autumn and spring colour, summer also with hydrangeas and dahlias and others also compete in this regard.

Your cottage is craftsmen built by local builders on an alpine style to complement the environment in which we live.

Shady Brook will not disappoint

What makes this property unique

You are not just another accommodation in a street, You are secluded, the ambience is relaxing shady Brook aspires to be something special, a place to mediate in and retouch those areas so difficult to do in our busy lives. Hear the birds, listen to the river, take scenic walks or just relax on your deck with a cuppa or a glass of wine watch the sun set over mountain ranges or the early morning dew catch the first rays of sun, its so special. Then do the tourist thing to wineries resturuants or what ever else maybe your thing. start your hike or bike ride from your cottage or head to the streams for some fishing.
