About this property

Make Memories At This Beautiful, Comfortable Northwoods Retreat

Birch cabin is one of three rental cabins at our family resort located on a quiet point on beautiful Big Chetac Lake. Whether you want to fish, explore nature, or just relax, this comfortable, beautifully-restored northwoods cabin is for you. Come once, and you'll see why some customers have been coming for over 20, 30, even over 50 years: this northwoods paradise feels like home.

Everything about this cabin, from the vaulted ceilings to the knotty pine tongue-and-groove paneling to the spectacular view of the lake, all say "relax and make yourself at home." And that's what generations of our guests have done. Some have made Birch Cabin at Nystrom's Resort their vacation home for four generations.

* The one bedroom has a queen-size bed, and a bonus single bed in a quaint pine log-and-paneling nook.
* Futons in the large open great room offer sleeping space for up to four more, making this cabin great for families.
* Large round oak dining room table for meals, games, puzzles.
* Flat screen TV and WiFi
* Wrap-around windows on the lake side offer 180 degree view of the lake, woods, and our beautiful grounds.
* Spacious grounds are great for lawn games, enjoying a camp fire, watching local wildlife, or just relaxing.
* Easy walk to the lake--no stairs.
* Boat launch less than a mile away.
* Plenty of dock space.
* Low section of dock for launching canoes an kayaks
* Easy 100-yard walk to Big Chetac Lake's famous Sand Bar, the nicest place to swim on the lake. This huge area of shallow water is the ideal place for all ages to swim, or play games, or just float around.
* Great fishing on three large lakes. Big Chetac Lake is more than seven miles long and is connected to two more lakes, offering more than nine miles of some of the best fishing in northern Wisconsin. If you are looking for Nothern Pike, Walleyes, Large- and Small-Mouth Bass, Bluegills, Crappies, or Perch, this is the place for you. Beginning spring 2017, you can clean and freeze your fish in our brand new fish house.
* Local wildlife you are likely to see include: many species of birds, ducks, geese, loons, bald eagles, deer, and great blue herons. Occasionally we also see beaver, otters, raccoons, and red fox.
* Cabin comes with a fishing boat or a dock slot for your own boat.

Birch Cabin at Nystrom's Resort is great for people, but not for pets. 2-footed guests only.

Our location on Indian Point is great if you just want to stay put, but it's also ideal if you want to get out and shop or see the sights in the Birchwood, Rice Lake or Hayward areas.

Why not come and make some great memories here? We and our guests have been doing that since 1942.

Quiet and Relaxing Resort Cabin
Birchwood is a great cabin with a roomy deck that overlooks Chetac Lake. The cabin is set in a resort with other cabins. There is enough space between the cabins and no issue with feeling over-crowded. There are also other amenities at the resort that are available - a fish cleaning station, an additional bathroom & shower and even a library. The owners are very friendly and made sure our stay was what we were looking for.

Birch Cabin is Delightful!
We loved Birch Cabin! It's a very spacious 1-bedroom cabin, but could easily accommodate a small family if some family members don't need private sleeping space and 1 bathroom is ok. The bed in the bedroom was comfortable and there's another kid's bed in there and a couple futons in the main room. We had family staying at a different cabin at this resort and we used Birch as the gathering spot for lounging and meals, which worked very well. John is an excellent on-site host, usually off doing his own thing. He's never in your face, but it was really nice knowing he was close in case we needed anything, which we never did. The lake was a little green in late August when we were there, but we swam anyway. The sandbar is close and fun for all ages and I hear the lake is much clearer in the early summer months of June and July. We used the canoe, which was great, and there is a fishing boat and pontoon available, too. The kitchen was well-equipped and there are outdoor weber grills available as well. We would come back and recommend to others, for sure!

Beautiful Setting and Great Hospitality
My husband and I were looking for a very last minute get away to the north woods and were surprised to find this affordable and very beautiful cabin still available. It was our luck that the owners, John and his mom, had just put the property up on VRBO recently and it seemed like a perfect fit. Prior to our arrival, John provided detailed answers to all of our questions regarding places to kayak, bike and hike and he gave us many recommendations for restaurants as well. He was already an attentive host before we even arrived, explaining what we could expect upon our arrival. When we pulled in to the Nystrom property, we were pleased to find the cabin looking exactly as it had in the ad and were even more pleased to see there were several other cabins on the property that were equally beautiful. John met us on our arrival and gave us the lay of the land, including a tour of their library, complete with free ice cream in the freezer for guests to enjoy. Our cabin was spacious and had more than enough room for my husband and I. The kitchen was well equipped for cooking and the living area had plenty of seating and had a beautiful view out the floor to ceiling windows looking out over the Big Chetac. We had all the comforts of home and saw lots of birds and wildlife right from the front door of our cabin. We found plenty to do in the area including many opportunities for kayaking, biking and hiking so we didn't spend long days at the cabin, but we did make use of John's row boat one evening and paddled out to the middle of the lake to enjoy a sunset, a little fishing, and ultimately a sky full of stars. We were even treated to the northern lights on the night of our arrival. Knowing our host, John, he most likely ordered that up for our enjoyment as well. Overall, we enjoyed our stay very much and would recommend Nystrom's to anyone who is looking for a beautiful rustic cabin tucked away in the woods. Thanks John for a wonderful stay and for making us feel like one of the clan!

Well kept family friendly resort
Our stay at Nystrom's was wonderful. We stayed in a well kept cabin which felt rustic, yet still with nice updates. The Nystroms were very friendly and accommodating. The kids loved the library area (which I'm sure had nothing to do with the ice cream that was located there:) We took some great sunset paddleboat rides. The resort feels nicely tucked in the woods, yet still has beautiful lake views. Located away from the busyness of Hayward, yet only about 25 min from there when looking to head to town for shopping/activities. Would definitely recommend to others.

About the host

Hosted by John Nystrom

Host profile image
Hi. I'm Marilyn Nystrom. My Husband, Jack, and I grew up in Chicago, raised four children in Arlington Heights, IL, and ran a successful business in Barrington, IL and Mt. Dora, FL. Jack and I decided to spend our retirement years investing our time, effort, and resources in the family resort. We have enjoyed every minute of renovating the five cabins and other buildings.

Why they chose this property

The story of Nystrom's Resort began in 1942 when Swedish immigrant and logging entrepreneur Eric Johan "John" Halberg had a vision for a family retreat at Indian Point on Big Chetac Lake. Family and friends told him his $300 was wasted on that land on the lake. "You could never grow anything on that sandy soil," they said. But he had a vision.

Alice Nystrom was the only one of his nine children interested in the place, so he left it to her when he passed in 1949. By the Mid-1950s, Alice had completed five cabins and began renting them. Throughout the late 50's, 60's and 70's, Nystrom's Resort became the annual family vacation spot for many families.

When Alice passed in 1987, her only child, Jack, and his wife, Marilyn, took over. They spent the next 28 years renovating the cabins one room at a time. Beginning with the 2008 season, they needed to curtail the number of guests they could serve each summer. Before Jack passed in September 2015, he insisted on completing the remaining projects. Now we are excited to announce that beginning with the summer of 2016, Nystrom's Resort is again welcoming new and former guests to enjoy a northwoods vacation with us.

John Halberg's vision has been realized: We love gathering here as a family. Lucky for you, we also rent our cabins to guests. Come and enjoy this quiet, beautiful place with us.

What makes this property unique

We love our unique location at Indian Point. With hundreds of feet of lake frontage on both sides of the lake, there's always another view to take in. We can enjoy both the sunrise and the sunset from right here.
