Wrapped in the green forest of summer, Casa del Rio Riverhouse is a tranquil and safe place in the country to relax and enjoy the winding, cool water of the beautiful Guadalupe River. Guests reside in a lovely stone and stucco cottage overlooking the river below. Fall colors tantalize the senses as we progress to the stark beauty of winter with sight of the cliffs and hills. All through the year the starry night is ablaze at this tranquil retreat. This beautiful property offers water, wings and wildlife for photographers and nature lovers, quiet seclusion for romantic getaways, and a comfortable, river-centered atmosphere for family fun. Whether looking for the perfect setting for a family gathering, or just a respite from the daily grind, you will find it under the huge Cypress and Chinkapin Oak trees at Casa del Rio Riverhouse!
Something for everyone!

The Riverhouse has 2 bedrooms with a king bed in one bedroom, and a queen bed and a twin trundle in the other bedroom sleeping a total of 6 people. The house also has a full bath and includes central heat and air. The living/dining area has a cathedral ceiling, stone wood-burning fireplace, 3 cushion sofa, and a comfortable side chair with a coffee table and beautiful rug. The kitchen is fully equipped with all the dishes, silverware utensils and pots and pans you need to prepare a meal for 6. Enjoy all this while listening to the timeless sound of the river flowing amid the rocks and sprawling Cypress trees. Abundant wildlife, featuring Whitetail and Axis deer adding to your enjoyment while staying at Casa del Rio Riverhouse, your Hill Country retreat.

Famous TX Resort Area!: We are within a 5 mile radius of many private boys and girls camps, and a mile away is Crider’s rodeo and dance hall, a tradition since 1927. The nearby Hunt Store is a familiar landmark in these hills where cowboys and city folk share stories while sitting by a warm fire or eating a delicious meal. Fredericksburg, a popular shopping place, is only a 45 minute drive away. Our area is also known for its art, music, arts & crafts, outdoor summer plays, wineries and antiquing.
We welcome you as our guest, happy that you are here, and will greet you warmly, making you instantly feel at home.
There is 50 acres here to explore along the beautiful clear waters of the Guadalupe River and a 250' hill to climb just beyond.
Two canoes are provided to canoe 3/4 of a mile in the wide deep part of the river to a waterfall, Angel Falls, to observe the beauty there. There is several acres in the yard in which to play baseball, volleyball, and for the children to run and play.
There is no property that compares to the beauty, peace, and serenity that is here at Casa del Rio Riverhouse, and the welcoming provided by the host, Betty, who has the greatest guests that come to the Texas Hill Country for a Texas size get-away.
I love being host to these awesome, wonderful, kind and loving guests.

Great Destination for Family
We came to Casa Del Rio for the 2024 solar eclipse as our main objective. But we also wanted to have a nice family time with a six night stay. Turns out there was plenty to do at the property as well as nearby Texas Hill Country attractions. The Riverhouse accommodated the four of us adults and our two 7-year old grand kids The property was super - with substantial acreage to the venue. We had full access to the property (except of course the host's main residence). The wildflowers were out; we paddled in the canoes; had picnics at the river; and campfires at night. The property host, Betty, was the best - very friendly and accommodating. Her family was around and helped make our stay wonderful.

Peaceful Getaway with a Wonderful Host.
A cool front arrived along with misty weather, so our time outside was limited. That said, we still enjoyed long walks along the river, the fire pit, a little. It of fly fishing, some time in the soothing rocking chair swings, and if course, a lovely greeting from Betty. What a wonderful hostess. I think we would return simply to see her again. The bed was so comfortable! While the home is near a road, it was quiet inside. I never heard any traffic while indoors. The home is simple yet welcoming and comfortable with all the necessities and more.

Awesome location
Casa del Rio is a great place to relax, fish, hike and enjoy the sounds of the river right in front of the cabin. Betty is an amazing host, super kind and sweet, she greeted us as we drove up and made us feel welcome with our pups. And gave us extra towels. And was available if we needed anything else. Super kind!! The cabin was clean and cozy and, the beds are comfortable, the kitchen has everything you need to cook and grill. Nice dishwasher and washer and dryer. We enjoyed our stay and can’t wait to go back.

A taste of living on the river
We had such a great time staying at this beautiful property right on the Guadalupe river. Betty, our host is the sweetest and was responsive to any questions we had. She even let us stay longer on our last day because she knew how much we were loving the beautiful property. We enjoyed hiking, canoeing and fishing right there on the property. We hope to come back someday in the spring or summer!

Nice family respite on the river
Our family had a very comfortable 3-night stay and enjoyed the property itself as well as access to nearby Lost Maples. Our host was very friendly and accessible next door. The place was a decent fit for our family of 5 and we took advantage of the river setting as much as possible in the (admittedly warm) TX winter. I bet this place really shines in the summer with the immediate river access.

Amazing place!!
This was our second time staying at this property. My family absolutely loves staying here. We love that you have access to spots in the river where it’s deep enough to swim and other spots more suitable for wading. There’s also a big back yard to enjoy!! Property owner is very nice and seems ver glad to have guests. We will be visiting again in the future.

Slice of heaven
We spent Easter weekend at Casa Del Rio with our 4 sons (9-17yrs old). The house was clean, the beds were comfortable, the view was gorgeous, and Betty was a wonderful host. She came over right away to greet us and ask if we needed anything. My favorite part was the rocking chair swings overlooking the River. So relaxing. The water was too cold to swim in, but we all thoroughly enjoyed the canoes.

Glamping in the Hill Country at Casa del Rio
I wanted a place that was "Hill Country" to visit with my son and his family (incl grandson). Casa del Rio was an absolute delight... the morning views up and down the river, watching groups of deer cross the river, the spacious walks, the BBQ, campfire and rustic but fully equipped cabin, and even the comfy/snuggly beds. A great time for all of us. Thanks Betty!

Tranquil and Serene
This is a lovely location and charming home. We enjoyed our walks along the river, swinging on the rocking chair swings, watching the birds in the trees, hearing the rain on the roof and just relaxing. The home had everything we needed for a nice stay. The location is close to parks, area activities and local restaurants. Hosts were gracious and we enjoyed visiting.

My husband and I recently stayed at Casa Del Rio for the 3rd time. If you haven't been you are missing out!! The water is beautiful, and the property is so peaceful. There is so much to do, and we have tried it all, but our favorite thing is just to float in circles. Thank you Betty once again for a wonderful relaxing get away. We hope to come see you again soon.

Love Casa Del Rio
This was our second time to stay at Casa Del Rio for camp closing. The property is beautiful, and the river access is so easy. The cottage is not fancy, but it is comfortable, clean, and is perfect for what we need. Honestly, we are outside most of the time because we love the river! Betty is a wonderful host and I’m sure we will stay with her again.

About the host

Hosted by Betty Dykes Matteson

Host profile image
A lifelong Texan, Betty Matteson grew up in La Grange, and resided in Houston for 30 years. Betty permanently moved to Hunt in 1987. For the past 30 years, Betty has been Innkeeper of Casa del Rio Riverhouse where her easy going manner and gracious hospitality keeps people coming back year after year. 'I've met some wonderful people and made many good friends through the guests that come to the Riverhouse. It is thrilling for me to see the great time guests have and how relaxed they become while here. I like to allow them privacy during their stay, only greeting them on arrival and telling them goodbye when they leave. There are many fine people in this beautiful country of ours, and many of them I have met.

Why they chose this property

Vacationing in Hunt has been a Matteson family tradition since 1930. Family patriarch and businessman Lewis W. Matteson Sr. and his wife Lillian Hall Matteson came from the Dakota Territory to Texas around 1917 to make Houston their home. Lew got his start with W. D. Cleveland & Sons selling groceries to the soldiers fighting Poncho Villa in south Texas. He continued on to find success in a variety of arenas including outdoor advertising and banking, significantly impacting the Houston community through his leadership and entrepreneurial spirit. The Mattesons first became acquainted with Hunt in the late 1920s at the invitation of Houston Mayor Oscar Holcombe. Lew and Lillian fell in love with the rustic, picturesque beauty of the Hill Country, and in 1930 they established their home-away-from-home, Camp Dakota, on the South Fork of the Guadalupe River just east of what is now Casa del Rio. The Mattesons, together with their children, Sarah Belle, Buster (Lewis W. Matteson Jr.), and Jeanne, enjoyed many years at their Hill Country retreat. Thirty-eight years after Camp Dakota was first built, Buster Matteson and his wife Betty Dykes Matteson bought neighboring property Casa del Rio to continue with tradition and make a place for their own children to discover what Lew and Lillian first fell in love with in Hunt. Generations of Mattesons are still enjoying this legacy.

What makes this property unique

Casa del Rio Riverhouse is a beautiful 50 acre property right on the river. It is the river that beckons guests from near and far, with its unique properties of clear, clean water, and tree lined banks of huge cypress trees, and with a backdrop of 300 ft hills. Its river frontage boasts both narrow and wide, shallow and deep, rushing and calm water textures. The variety of wildlife, including Axis and Whitetail deer, Big-Mouth bass, catfish, wood ducks, fox, many species of birds, and even a Blue Heron, inspires a spirit of adventure and the land begs to be explored. A stay at the Riverhouse is comfortable as well as outdoorsy, a get-away retreat experience with every convenience of home. Casa del Rio's flexible accommodations make it suitable for one guest or parties of 6.
Here you will find the beauty of the hills and river, and find comfort and peace.
This is truly God's country.
