About this property

Renovated 1950s beach shack. Private with magnificent ocean view

If you love and appreciate a classic 50s Aussie beach shack then you’ll enjoy this lovingly curated time capsule and I haven’t even mentioned the stunning view.

Set high on the hill in one of Wye’s oldest streets, the house has stunning ocean views looking straight down to Wye beach and with Wye’s largest residential gumtrees on the property, the house has a bush feel privacy unlike any other in the heart of Wye River. The upshot is you can lie on a banana lounge on the deck and feel like you’re just submerged in nature. The bird life visiting you on the deck will blow your mind. Very friendly Kookaburras, Cockatoos, Rosella's..... they are not shy. You may also spot a Koala in the gums or a mob of Kangaroos in the back garden.

The interiors have been fitted with original 50's & 60's furnishings, artworks and appliances, and from the moment you walk in its like taking a step back in time to the golden days of 1950's Aussie beach culture.

This house wasn’t bought as an investment but a passion project and it’s still evolving. It will only appeal to those that love and appreciate mid century design or want to experience the property's time capsule feel which makes a stay at Kath's View a unique holiday experience.

There are plenty of modern beach houses for rent in Wye but there is only one Kath’s View. Please scroll through all the photos. I have recently had the house re-shot and by scrolling through you'll see exactly what this time capsule is all about.

Located in the original old part of Wye River, Kath's View is just a short 3 min walk down the hill to the main beach, Wye General Store and the Pub.

Location, Location, Location, an important thing to note for first time visitors to Wye is that many of the houses are located so high up on the hill that it's impossible to walk to and back from beach, so a less than 1km walk will require you to hop in the car and in the peak of summer there is scare parking at the bottom of the hill. Kath's View is located within an easy walk to the beach so no need to get into a car.

For overseas visitors travelling down the Great Ocean Road, the house offers an opportunity to experience the tradition of the great Aussie beach shack complete with its original 1950's fit out.

Kath's View is typical of beach houses designed in the 50's, the property has a large open plan top floor living/ dining kitchen capturing those magical sea views.

The house can accommodate up to 7 guests in 3 separate sleeping quarters located on the property or just rent the main house master bedroom for two.

The master bedroom located inside the main house has been incorporated into the open plan top floor space. With no walls to block out the view, the open plan bedroom allows you to lie in bed and soak up the views or light the fire and turn the 55 inch LCD SMART TV around to enjoy both big screen and the crackling fire from the comfort of your bed. The perfect couple's bolthole in Wye's wild winters.

The Peacock bedroom downstairs accessed by an undercover external stair off the main house sleeps 2 in a queen bed and a separate single bed can be provided for a 3rd guest.

The bathroom is also located downstairs and accessed by the external undercover staircase. Two toilets, one located downstairs and a powder room upstairs in the main house.

Those wanting lots of privacy will enjoy staying in the Port-hole bungalow. Again 7th guest can be accommodated with a full-size single bed provided on request.

A large deck off the top floor offers panoramic ocean views looking straight down to Wye beach. Enjoy a barbie lunch or just lounge around on a deck chair in the sun. You'll find it hard to drag yourself away from the sea view or watching the surfers' catch a wave.

MODERN CONVENIENCES HAVE NOT BEEN FORGOTTEN:

WIFI on Telstra broadband throughout the property.

55 inch Sony Smart TV in the lounge room, separate 50 inch TV in the Port-hole Bungalow with DVD player (ideal space for teenagers to enjoy away from the rest of the family in a little cocoon) Stereo, iPod docking station, split system air-conditioning/heating in every bedroom including main house, lots of platters, glasses, crockery and cookware.

The house is well equipped for entertaining with the BBQ located on the deck, outdoor table and chairs. Inside is perfect for dinner parties with guests also able to enjoy the ocean and bush views from the dining table.

Guests, please note this property is not suitable for young children and as such we do not accept children under 5 years. The property has two lots of stairs and due to the configuration of the bedrooms located on separate parts of the property, children over 5 years may not feel comfortable sleeping downstairs away from Mum and Dad. Some kids love it (especially teens) while others may not, please consider this before making a booking enquiry.

Great location
This is a lovely place with great views.- I found it overpriced for what it was and the bottom floor quite dusty. Overall a nice stay though.

Magic spot
Lovely little place for a few days to get away from it all. The view was fantastic, sitting amongst the gum trees, with the birds, watching the ocean. When the rain came over it was lovely to snuggle up with the fire on and watch the clouds scoot past. Wish we could have stayed a few more days.

Stunning views
This is a unique property with a distinctive 50s beach shack vibe. Is is rustic and very relaxing. Worth reading all the notes on the layout because this is also quite unique. We loved the deck, bbq, stunning tree/sea views and the collection of 50s furniture and memorabilia. Louise was a helpful and responsive host.

Amazing views
Loved our stay at this property. The view was amazing, decor very nice, and such great wildlife around. Such a cosy and nice vibe!! Only disappointment was that as two couples we only had access to the main bed in the open plan communal area and the bungalow. We were hoping for two separate rooms, as it was listed there were 3 bedrooms available. But Overall we had a lovely stay!

Authentic Australian beach home with great ocean views. The home is decorated in lovely 50's furniture and is great for a romantic couples retreat (main floor is like a self contained area with open plan bedroom / kitchen / lounge / WC and fireplace and stepping onto a large Balcony). Other 2 rooms are great for teens/adults and the outside/downstairs bathroom is all part of the beach experience. We all loved sitting out on the balcony soaking up the fresh air, ocean views and wildlife. All you need is down the road, great Cafe/Store and Pub. Some of us didn't have phone reception but I think that was a bonus. Kath's place is a wonderful reminder of how beach life should be lived.

Memorable
We loved that the house has remained true to the 1950s. It was so good to get the children off their devices and Netflix streaming and take in the glorious natural surroundings. My children absolutely loved being woken up by the kookaburras and cockatoos every morning and made sure they were all well fed. One of the best family holidays we’ve had 😀 The view was incredible too!

Stunning Ocean Views
Ideal for a quick get-away. A Fun, quirky house - a real step back in time of old beach shacks of the 50's/60's - but with all the mod cons! Everything you needed was there- milk and chocolates on arrival was lovely. AESOP hand wash in the bathrooms. If you are taking children, and you intend to sleep upstairs (which we did), the downstairs bedroom doesn't lock and is semi-outside, as is main bathroom and loo. The other is a separate dwelling-which my 21yo loved!! Great communication with the owner Louise.

Sanctuary in a time capsule
The reviews saying that the property is smaller than the pictures are correct - the photographer was savvy! However, if you keep that in mind you won't be disappointed. Our stay was just the peace I needed with a bonus adventure back into my childhood (but with all the mod-cons of air-conditioning and electric blankets). We ate on the deck and soaked up the view - this is particularly nice in the morning watching the sun on the sea. We lay on the couch or deck and star gazed at night. Jigsaw fans will love the huge glass table - you can do your favourite thing and take breaks gazing at the view through the bay windows. We always bring our own cooking utensils but there was no need here - the kitchen was well equipped. Cooking on the 1950s hob was definitely a blast from the past for me. My teenage daughter, a child of her times, was amazed by the separate taps for hot and cold water. The fire was also a wonderful bonus and draws well while providing heat. We were glad of the cooler weather as it gave us an excuse to use it. Highly recommend this as an escape from the world and a digital detox (we cannot comment on the TV as we did not turn it on!) We also had no problems with reception on our Optus phones - Wye River appears to have resolved this long standing issue.

Disappointing and overpriced
While some of the living spaces are nice, this property is overpriced relative to other properties around and has some serious issues. It is not a 3 bedroom property. The third bed is next to the kitchen and open to the living room. Also there is no washing machine so we found ourselves having to use the local campground laundry rooms. And whilst being aware that the bathroom is outside, navigating uneven concrete paths in the middle of the night is not good. Some of the appliances are old and potentially unsafe. This property needs some upgrades.

5 nights of bliss
Exactly like the pics, very vintage and cute as. Tiny, but great little kitchen that had all we needed. The balcony was the perfect place to take in the view. A short walk to the beach, easy down the hill but a bit tougher coming back. Communication with Louise was very easy and prompt with responses. With 3 grown boys it was a little tight but we made it work. There was a lovely welcome also with chocs and champers which was really appreciated.

Beautiful views, cosy and distinctly retro
We had a comfy stay and warmed up to this quaint property. It is smaller than the photos suggest and we were surprised by the number of conditions placed around the use of the property and against the bond just before commencing our stay. As this is a small house, the kitchen is small and appliances provided are more suited to short stays. Aside from this, it is well located, easy to find and lovely to return to after a long day at the beach.

Make sure you read the description properly. The set up is not a regular home.
2 of the 3 rooms require you to walk outside the main building. The other bed is in the lounge room. The toilet and shower are located outside the main house too. It’s a cute place, but very expensive for what it is.

A stylish space with incredible views
We had a fantastic stay at Kath's view. The styling and attention to detail was incredible and we loved feeling like we had stepped back in time. The view is stunning, perfect for a summer's evening bbq. There's plenty of excellent wildlife spotting to be done too, we had a wandering koala join us on the lawn and so much Birdlife! Would definitely recommend a stay here, thank you!

Like a movie set - totally unique beach house
Amazing beach pad we loved the 1950's interior and we felt like were on a movie set. We couldn't leave the deck and had BBQ's both days. House is well equipped for entertaining and location is ideal with short walk to beach & pub. Very cool beach house with beautiful views. Will def stay again.

Looked better on the photos
Some nice 1970s decor, the little things the owner left for the guests was a really nice touch. Beautiful views. However the place needs a good restoration done to it. Having to walk to the toilet and shower in 2015 is not something worth paying for.

All you could ever want!
An incredible soothing stay. Beyond the comforting retro styling, we instantly felt as if we were at our own beloved, family holiday shack. We loved its close proximity to the beach, regional fare and the idyllic Wye River community. There's nothing you need to bring, Louise, has thought of everything. Whether it's a romantic getaway or a larger family gathering, this rental will tick every box.

Host profile image
This house has been a passion project, as a lover of mid-century design and all things 50s/60s, I searched for years to find the perfect beach shack to house my collection of 1950s art and furniture started when I was in my early 20s and have been collecting ever since. I finally found the perfect original shack, in a prime location with no powerlines in front to spoil the ocean view and being as private as one could possibly get. This house is deeply personal named after my loved Grandmother, Kath. I’m thrilled to share it with those who seek and appreciate experiencing a unique step back in time.

Why they chose this property

Unique position with lots of privacy surrounded by the tallest gumtrees in Wye that still exist. The wildlife you see when staying is hard to describe, the birds, a mob of Grey kangaroos in the backyard and the gorgeous birdlife, particularly the Kookaburras that land on the deck. You never know what you’ll see or experience landing just metres away when sitting on the deck. It is not the best interests of the bird life ie Cockatoos to feed them bird seed or meat. It maybe great for the kids and getting pictures but it takes away their natural instinct to source their own food. Please refrain from this urge for their welfare.

What makes this property unique

It is one of very few original beach shacks on the Great Ocean Rd that is still original in design and furnished as a time capsule of the 1950s. While there is still more I’d love to do to the house and it will come in time....it’s the cosiest time capsule you’ll ever experience.

Many in my family where hoping it burnt in the 2015 Christmas Day bush fire so I could rebuild a modern beach house but I would have been devastated if it had gone. There are plenty of modern beach houses in Wye River but Kath’s View was built by legendary local builder Paddy Harrington in the 1950s and is one of a few remaining and that’s a precious thing to keep his legacy and this history in the town.

To appreciate his significance and contribution to Wye..... you can enjoy a walk along his honorary path from Wye to Separation Creek. Paddy’s Walk starts at the side of the CFA on the Boulevard just down the bottom of the hill from Kath’s View.
