About this property

Island Cottage, Portland, ME, Sleeps 6-8, Walk to ferry, beach, restaurants.

Island living close to the city of Portland by ferry. This cottage is perfect for enjoying city life as well as a relaxing island vacation. The summer home of the Mayor of Portland in the late 1800s has 6 bedrooms, 2 modern baths with modern kitchen and spacious interior/exterior spaces. Original woodwork and architectural details make this home unique. Dual living rooms, formal dining room and multiple first and second floor porches give you many choices for solitude or family time. Beautiful grounds are a short walk to a clay tennis court, playground and beaches. Great Diamond Island is a short ferry ride from the Old Port, the heart of Portland ME. Short walk across the island to Diamond Cove which has two restaurants/bars during July and August.
Enjoy beautiful sunsets from the nearby beach or sunrises from the state pier. You may enjoying exploring the sandbar that provides access to Little Diamond Island at low tide, dock jumping, kayaking, island strolls or reading and relaxing on one of the many porches.
The city of Portland is a 20 minute ferry ride away where you can walk to hundreds of 5 star restaurants. Casco Bay Lines is located on the Maine State Pier and no car is necessary in the city to access museums, galleries, restaurants and historic sites. Visit Long Island (beautiful beach!) or Chebeague Island (golf course and restaurant) by taking the ferry down the bay.

I live nearby and love meeting new people and answering questions to help you make the most of your stay! Please reach out if I can help.

Perfect Weekend Wedding in Maine
We traveled to Great Diamond Island for a friend’s wedding and were so pleased to stay at Judy’s cottage. The house came equipped with everything we needed to feel at home, and Judy made getting to the island and checking in a breeze. This rental provided the perfect environment for relaxation and celebration with cozy private bedrooms and spacious sitting areas for our gathering of friends. The communication with the host before and throughout our trip was superb, and we greatly appreciated it. Judy’s hospitality was especially welcome as we were new to the small island community. Not to be missed!

GDI Summer 2024
The Towers are perfectly situated on the island for access to all that GDI has to offer. It was so peaceful to spend the week there and the house gave us ample opportunity to stretch out and relax. Judy is a great host!

Becoming part of the community
Judy, the owner of the property greeted us at the dock and helped us learn to navigate island life. She purchased eggs, coffee and treats for our first morning as there is no grocery stores on the island. She stopped by to check in gave us helpful hints. The architectural features of the house are unique and the wrap around porch is a delight. The house is a work in progress and does require additional attention. Overall a very positive island experience.

This place is great
Judy was awesome, she was more than helpful and accommodating. Couldn’t have asked for more. The house is unique and way bigger than we expected. We had a great time and couldn’t have asked for a better host or house! Thanks Judy ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Idyllic setting
A true getaway in Maine!! We enjoyed a picture perfect week on Great Diamond Island. Judy was a wonderful host and made sure our stay was great from start to finish. The island was beautiful and really made us feel like we left the world behind. We can’t wait for a return trip!

I live in MA in the winter and ME in the summer and love the Portland area. I am happy to answer questions about the area and to help you plan adventures during your stay. I have spent most summers of my life on this island and love the friendly community and scenic Maine coast. I also love being so close to the city of Portland which has so much to offer.

Why they chose this property

This vacation home you will never forget is located in the city of Portland as well as on a small island off the coast! Laid back island life or city vibe at your finger tips. The boat rides, the sunsets, the night skies, formal dinners in the dining room and coffee and cocktails on the porch are some of the memories you will take with you after a stay with us.

What makes this property unique

Ferry to the Old Port from the Great Diamond dock on Casco Bay Lines which runs approximately 10 trips per day to the City. It is not necessary to bring a car to Maine and if you are flying in there is no need to rent one. If you do bring your car, you will park it in Portland and ferry out to the island.
