It does have a door and a small window with a forest view.

The cottage has a full kitchen with water view, bathroom, dining room with water and forest views, living room with water views and a wood stove with wood provided, plus laundry room. Two decks overlook the water***. Deck chairs on both decks, plus picnic table in yard and a charcoal grill. Rowboat and oars, 2 kayaks and paddles, new as of summer 2024 there are also 2 stand-up paddleboards, and lifejackets provided for your use (owners are not responsible for any injuries or death caused by recreational activities).

Basic staples such as coffee, tea, cream, cocoa, sugar, flour, cooking oil, and standard spices. Continental breakfast provided*.

There is high-speed internet and a smart TV with Roku so you may use your own streaming accounts to watch movies/shows and extra HDMI cable for connecting to personal devices**. We provide a complimentary Netflix account. If you use other streaming platforms on the Roku device, please be sure to log out of each personal steaming accounts. In the dining room there is a collection of VHS tapes, for all ages, to play in small TV/VCR (no Roku for this TV).

For heat, we have electric wall heaters plus a wood stove with firewood provided. If you're comfortable with a wood stove, please use to keep heating costs down (and for ambiance).

There are handrails for the 27 steps leading to and from the cottage and guardrails (both installed June 2021). New vinyl flooring and interior paint as of 2021. Wider paved (!) cement driveway, also done in 2021. Wooden steps down to bulkhead installed in July 2020.

The cottage is located thirteen minutes to the Washington State Capitol and Campus and just five minutes to The Evergreen State College. Half a mile to city bus (however, French Road is NOT the most walkable, for your own safety, please do not walk on it at night). Five minutes to Olympia Country and Golf Club where golfers who are members of Private Club Network or BoxGrove can secure guest privileges.

>>> NOTE: There is a steep driveway down to/out of the cottage. Cement driveway was poured in, though all/four-wheel drive is recommended for driving on French Loop during snowy weather. Additional parking is available for two mid-sized cars at a pull-out at the top of road, if need be.

*Fresh fruit, granola bars, juice, coffee maker (coffee beans provided), tea, and organic half-and-half and oat milk for coffee/tea.

**A safe is provided to secure your laptop and other valuables and owners are not liable for any lost, damaged, or stolen property.

*** Unfortunately, the back deck needs repairs that are in the process of being scheduled and is blocked off until further notice. Please refrain from use until repairs occur. The front deck is still able to be used with no restrictions!

>>> ALERT! <<< Be sure to book directly through VRBO. There are scammers out there trying to get prospective guests to book through them and pay via various peer-to-peer sites to avoid booking site fees. These are scams and people are losing their money and not getting a legitimate booking. Please don't fall prey to scammers.

Your rental of the Butler Cove Beach cottage includes access to: the entire house, front deck (see *** above), yard, parking area, beach^, bulkhead^^, as well as the rowboat^^^, paddleboards (2), and kayaks (2).

^Our beach extends into the cove (muddy, be warned) and just to the right of the steps down onto the beach. It includes a portion of the sea beans — the succulent-looking plant carpeting the sand (see the last three photos for the property's boundary). Though beach strolling on neighboring beaches (not bulkheads**) is permitted at low tide, bringing down lawn chairs, beach towels, sunbathing, or temporarily storing lifejackets, paddles/oars, paddleboards, or boats, etc. on neighboring beaches/the neighboring sea beans is not.

^^Please do not travel across neighboring bulkhead[s] as they are considered private property.

^^^As of 08/03/2024 we discovered that the rowboat is currently missing an oarlock making it unavailable for use at this time. Both kayaks and paddleboards are still fully functional.

Other things to note are that during the summer months (Memorial Day through Labor Day), there is a two-week maximum stay limit. This allows returning guests have access to open dates for annual events, such as music festivals, family reunions, etc. From Labor Day until Memorial Day, there is the option for longer term stays and there is a monthly rate available during those months. One-night minimum year round.

There are 27 steps leading down and up to/from the cottage. Unfortunately, making this property not ADA accessible.

Time away from home with the pup
We spent the weekend relaxing and letting the dog swim in the bay. He loved it so much. The place was clean and cozy. Restaurants and shopping were close by. We were sent all the information to let ourselves in ahead of time. We will definitely stay there again.

Holiday oasis
We always enjoy our stay. You can tell the owners put a lot of thought and love into this place and all the details they've put into it. Perfect place for Olympia winter when the weather can change one minute to the next. You will be happy just sitting by the wood stove looking at the ducks through the picture window.

Fully-outfitted lake house
Just stayed for the one night, but will definitely try coming back in the summer. Really great amenities and a comfortable bed with nice pillows. Really appreciative of all the options available to help parents with little ones and a decked out kitchen. You’re really staying in someone’s special place, just like the old bnbs

Really enjoyed the tidal effect in this cove, fish jumping and appreciate the historical significance of this property. Bobs creation of a unique property was evident. Definitely not run of the mill work. Built with Love was apparent. Thank you Bob and Debbie!

Peaceful and comfortable
We only stayed one night, but the location was quiet and lovely on the inlet. There are a decent number of steps down from the parking area to the cottage, but we knew that upfront, so it was fine. All in all a nice setting to relax after a day of travel.

Amazing place
Probably the best place I have stayed! Peaceful, well-stocked, and they even let us use the wood stove! Low tide made for nice beach walks, with lots of shells. Even saw a red fox chasing the ducks. Hopefully we get a chance to stay here again some day.

Quiet and Relaxing with everything you need
My husband and I stayed at the cabin for a quick 2 night get-away. We appreciated all the nice touches, like providing cream or oat milk for the coffee, and chilled glasses already in the freezer. Also everything was very well labeled which you don't see often! I watched ducks, herons, otters and even a seal swim by as the tide came in - it was lovely. A very peaceful location!

No unhappy surprises at the place
I have heard people complain about rentals not being what they seem in the listing. This place is even better than the listing. So peaceful and very very clean. Even in the areas a lot of cleaners miss. It smelled fresh but not perfumed, which is really important to me. The owner took the time and expense to supply a lot of extra things that made it feel very welcoming. The area is super quiet and private. I think I only saw one other person on the road the whole time we were here. Thanks Deb!

Comfortable Stay with Beautiful Views
I stayed at this VRBO listing for 2 nights with my husband. We were able to find the cabin and walk down to steps and get settled in. We greatly appreciated the milk and snacks that was left for us by Deborah. It was nice that 2 kayaks and a row boat (with life jackets) are made available but on one day, there was low tide and the next day was raining so we were unable to take any of these out. We greatly appreciated the use of the washer and dryer and also made use of the kitchen. This cabin had everything that we needed (and more) during our short stay. I would love to stay here again the next time I visit the area.

Summer holiday weekend
This cottage is in a lovely, secluded location with easy access to Olympia and other natural areas. It was very comfortable staying here with immediate access to the water during high tide; the owners generously leave kayaks and a rowboat for guests to use. Inside, all details have been considered from a fully equipped kitchen to finding sunscreen and bug repellant in the bathroom. This is a casual and slightly rustic accommodation but perfect for going in and out in the summer and being able to dine or just relax on the multiple decks. My family loved staying here and we hope to return!

Felt like home
We had the pleasure of staying 5 nights at the cabin and it did not disappoint. The mornings were cool and the evenings peaceful. There were just enough personal touches to make our experience feel like home. The location was perfect with all the necessities a short drive away. The city of Olympia was also fun to walk around. Overall our stay was just what we needed. We would definitely recommend this to our family and friends and would consider returning ourselves in the future.

About the host

Host profile image
My family has owned this waterfront cottage since 1982. We lived there full time for 11 years before building a larger house to accommodate our growing (now grown) children. We continue to vacation at the cottage, hold family gatherings, or just go over for a walk on the beach or for an outing in the rowboat, kayaks, or paddleboards. We live not far away from the cottage so if you need anything while you are there, have questions, need directions or referrals, etc., we are usually nearby to be of assistance. The cottage is set up like a home and you will be quite comfortable there.

Why they chose this property

We fell in love with the property the minute we first saw it in June 1982. The cottage is nestled at the base of a hill on an acre of forested land. The road to the property is a windy country road that hugs a forested hillside. The second you drive onto the road, you feel the cooler temperature, smell the forest and the water. You give a relaxing sigh. Ah, relaxation. From the deck of the cottage, you are only 13 feet from the shore edge and you can watch the tides come in and out, and view the wildlife: deer, seal, blue heron and other sea birds, king fishers, salmon, river otters and more. A wonderful place to relax.

What makes this property unique

Close to town but it feels like you are miles away. Downtown Olympia and the State Capitol are 10 minutes away; The Evergreen State College is 5 minutes or less. Major grocery stores, shopping centers, service stations, movie and live theatres, pubs, restaurants, churches, museums, medical offices and the hospitals are within minutes. Plenty of solitude and privacy. Even though you are only minutes from Hwy 101 or Interstate 5, it feels like you are out in the country, in a quiet, private retreat.
