About this property

Koonawarra | Mt Wilson | 24 acres of Established Heritage Botanical Gardens

Koonawarra is a comfortable 3 bedroom home with 3 bathrooms. It is filled with natural light and has views of the gardens. Koonawarra is located on the highest point in Mt Wilson. The name Koonawarra originates from an Aboriginal word meaning "a high point of land with smooth, round stones".

Located in 24 acres of historical Dennarque Estate gardens, which have been featured in local and international media, and regarded by many as the best cold climate garden in Australia.

The gardens were designed over 140 years ago by the then Royal Botanic Gardens Sydney director, Charles Moore. The Gardens still retain a large number of original plantings from late 1880s that were introduced from various countries around the world.

There are many rare species of maples, rhododendrons, camellias, dahlias and many other exotic and rare plants. A Japanese influenced garden has recently been added to Estate.

Rarely open to the public, the exotic cool climate gardens of Dennarque Estate are best experienced as in-house guests.

Guests can enjoy a game of tennis, stroll through the gardens, watch many migrating birds, or just relax and curl up with a good book! Koonawarra is ideally placed as a perfect base to explore the Blue Mountains towards 3 directions: towards Bilpin, Leura and Lithgow.

A great spot for a short break with teenagers
Very clean and comfortable property - and lovely gardens. The teenagers particularly enjoyed the tennis court - and the space to roam around (as well as the Foxtel).

Sensational colour/peace/tranquility
The perfect weekend getaway - 4 days enjoying the most amazing colour of such beautiful flowers/shrubs. Accommodation is fabulous. 3 generous bedrooms, very comfortable beds/plush towels/bath robes. Newly renovated bathroom, generous shower with a very good water pressure. Separate toilet. Very large lounge with tv/foxtell, view over beautiful gardens/grass area. New kitchen, very functional with just a few items eg. tongs, extra platters/bowls required. Beautiful glass conservatory with lovely glass dining table overlooking gardens. Air-conditioning/heating. Such a delight to have 24 acres of superb gardens to wander around without another person around. The spring colours were just sensational, we could not get enough of the beauty of the gardens of Koonawarra and Denarque. We were so privileged to be able to have the use of this property with our friends. There is a tennis court and croquet facilities. BBQ and pizza oven. A photographers dream.

Amazing Property and Beautiful Home!
We recently stayed at Koonawarra as a group of 6 for a weekend in April 2015 during the Mt Wilson Festival. The property that Koonawarra is on, is amazing, and the house itself is nice and cozy for a group of 6 with a great kitchen and facilities. We all thoroughly enjoyed this stay 100%. As an added bonus the profits of this stay are all donated to charity (FSHD Global Research Foundation) which we thought was a really nice cause to support.

Gardening and nature are two things that we love most. Our time spent at the Estate tending to the expansive gardens in the beautiful setting of Mt Wilson in the Blue Mountains is the ideal retirement project for us!

Why they chose this property

Mt Wilson is a beautiful small village set in the Blue Mountains. It is a perfect spot to embrace nature at its best, for a spot of retreat, and to get away from the hustle and bustle of the busy daily grind of the city. The rich basalt soil in the village creates a perfect environment for some stunning gardens in the area

What makes this property unique

Dennarque Estate has a special place in Mt Wilson. The village of Mt Wilson was established in 1870s. Dennarque was built in 1879, being one of the original 6 houses that were built at the time. Dennarque is the only original 2 level sandstone establishment in the Village. The gardens were established in 1870s by Charles Moore from the Royal Sydney Botanical Gardens, with plants from around the world. Today, many original plantings remain in the garden. Dennarque Estate is the ideal base for exploring the Blue Mountains.
