If you are looking for somewhere special to stay in one of the most ruggedly beautiful areas of Tasmania look no further than Wildwood Retreat!

Wildwood Retreat is a beautifully appointed, fully self contained one bed, two storey apartment that offers city comfort in a gorgeous rural setting! The retreat has a 7 star energy rating.

The retreat also enjoys beautiful views over rolling pasture towards Cascade Bay and Norfolk Inlet with mountain backdrop in the distance - a 'perfect picture box scene' where the light and mood changes constantly!

Wildwood lies in its own private kingdom, surrounded by 100 acres of pasture and pristine native Eucalypt forest, including habitat for the critically endangered Swift Parrot. The property is located in the bucolic idyll of the hamblet of Koonya, that lies on the banks of cascade Bay on the Tasman Peninsula.

Koonya is on the Port Arthur and Nubeena tourist route that meanders off the Arthur Highway and is perfectly located to access all of the area's tourist attractions, no further than a 10 minute drive from everything.

The retreat adjoins Wildwood (our home) BUT the retreat is fully self contained and enjoys its own private driveway, garden area and entry so that guests can come and go as they please. There is just the two of us living on the property (a couple) and we do not disturb guests unnecessarily during their stay as we highly value our guests privacy, but guests are always welcome to say hello if they wish! And we are more than happy to provide guests with anything extra they may need - all guests need do is ask!

The retreat bedroom is extremely spacious with a large built in robe, desk and floor to ceiling windows that enjoy lovely views over rolling pasture towards Norfolk Inlet. There is a European Kingsize Bed in the bedroom. The contemporary ensuite has a free standing bath and separate walk in shower and a floating vanity. Quality towels, handmade soap, a hairdryer and robes are also provided, as well as beach towels during the summer months. The bathroom also has bi-fold windows so that guests can enjoy an indoor/outdoor experience.

There is a beautiful modern stainless steel and timber spiral staircase in the retreat lobby/entry area that leads guests up to the spacious and comfortable contemporary open plan living/kitchen/dining area on the second level that boasts floor to ceiling glass windows at tree top level. The views from this area are spectacular and guests will feel as if they are literally floating amongst the treetops - a perfect place to relax, de-stress and commune with nature!

The kitchen has composite stone bench tops, quality stainless steel appliances including a Smeg Oven and cooktop, a coffee machine, fridge/freezer, microwave and small dishwasher.

The kitchen is well equipped and the pantry offers a generous supply of pantry basics, including freshly ground coffee, a selection of gourmet teas, olive oil, sugar and a selection of herbs and spices.

The open plan living/kitchen/dining area has dining seating for up to 4 guests and a two x 2 1/2 seater sofas. There is a flat screen TV with FREE Netflix as well as free to air TV. Music can also be played through the TV. In the bedroom there is another TV screen and a DVD player (but it only plays DVD's). A selection of DVD's are in the upper level TV console. There are also a small selection of games, magazines and books for guests to enjoy.

Original and limited edition art works also feature at the property from Australian artists.

Wildwood Retreat enjoys a 7 star energy rating. The property is clad on the exterior in stunning spotted gum sourced sustainably. The retreat entry door is bespoke and has been constructed using recycled timbers.

There is not a laundry at the retreat however, guests can arrange this with us on request, subject to availability (we unfortunately cannot guarantee this always). The laundry area can be accessed via a rear glass door close to the retreat.

Prolific bird and wildlife can be viewed directly from the property.

PROVISIONS
Guests are invited to bring their own provisions as the property has its own kitchen and cooking facilities (we do as mentioned provide pantry basics such as herbs, oil, sugar, coffee, teas and a selection of sauces plus a few other random extras other guests have left behind).

The retreat is not suitable for people with wheelchairs or with mobility disabilities we are so sorry, as the land is steep and the retreat has a spiral staircase. The area around the immediate property is relatively flat, however beyond the garden area the land is steep, the ground uneven, there is an open dam, unfenced stone terraces and stone steps to negotiate.

THINGS TO DO ….

Wildwood Retreat is situated in a beautiful rural location. Koonya lies on the Port Arthur Tourist route and is about a 10-15 minute drive to both Port Arthur and Eagle Hawk Neck and local facilities in Nubeena. Koonya is central to accessing ALL activities and facilities.

Many tourists choose to just do a day tour to Port Arthur Historic Site and they miss out hugely for there are many wonderful things to do here on the Tasman Peninsula. Here are some of my suggestions:

1. Visit Port Arthur Historic Site (perhaps even a ghost tour!)
2. Visit the Coal Mines Historic Site at Saltwater River … its much smaller than Port Arthur but is also interesting and free and is in a beautiful location!
3. Take an award winning boat trip with Pennicott Wilderness Tours that explores the coast from Eaglehawk Neck to Tasman Island: see seal colonies, giant kelp forests, whales (in season), albatross, sea eagles, the famous Totem Pole and the highest cliffs in the southern hemisphere.
4. Visit Port Arthur Lavender: browse the gift shop, then have a spot of lunch whilst enjoying stunning views of the inlet
5. Take a class at or visit the award-winning Mchenry Distillery at Port Arthur
6. Gin lovers can also enjoy a tasting at the new Impressions Bay Distillery at Premaydena only a 3 - 4 minute drive away.
7.. Enjoy lunch at the On the Bay restaurant at Stewarts Bay Lodge in Port Arthur, OR an evening meal at 1830 at Port Arthur Historic Site.
7. Explore Pirates Bay and other sites at Eaglehawk Neck including the rare geological formation of the Tesselated pavements, the convict 'Dog Line' and Officers quarters museum. Drive through the quirky doo town on your way to see the Devils Arch, Waterfall look out and the Blow Hole or enjoy some of the best fish and chips in Tasmania at "Doolishus".
8. Explore Tasman National Park - including the beautiful Fortescue Bay a large section of the Three Capes Walking Track offering sensational walks and views and its possible to do two capes in free day walks.
9. Explore the many coves, walks and beaches on the peninsula including Safety Cove, Remarkable Caves (the remarkable Cave walk to Crescent Bay is also splendid with stunning views), Stewarts Bay, Lime Bay, Pirates Bay and Sloping Main.
10. Enjoy some deep sea fishing or diving amongst the giant sea kelp forests
11. Para glide from the aerie at EagleHawk Neck - where many visitors and locals have seen (subject to the right conditions) the southern lights
12. Just sit back, relax and de-stress with a glass of wine whilst enjoying the stunning views from the property with some local oysters - bliss!

LOCATION

Wildwood Retreat is in Koonya on the Tasman Peninsula in South East Tasmania, approximately one hour from Hobart airport and one hour and twenty minutes SE of Hobart.

The Tasman Peninsula is one of the most beautiful and rugged areas of Tasmania - with the highest sea cliffs in the southern hemisphere. It is considered a remote rural location however certainly not remote by Western Australia or Northern Territory standards!

There is a doctor surgery in Nubeena and a Chemist. There are two small IGA supermarkets in the area, one in Nubeena and the other at White Beach, both within 9-11 km's of the property. The Preymadena store is 7km's away.

Perfect retreat
We were looking for a beautiful property that offered all the creature comforts while soaking in the scenery. Wildwood had all this and more. Loved the outdoor cushioned sunloungers, nestled under a sprawling tree. Perfect spot for reading of an evening & watching the native animals.

Such a gorgeous location - near enough to what you need and far enough to feel completely secluded. The property is beautiful enough to just stay there, but the environment has so much to do. It's just fantastic.

Relaxing break
Wildwood is the perfect place to stay for a relaxing, peaceful break. Beautiful surroundings, great watching the wildlife. The accommodation is very well appointed including the kitchen. Best thing has to be the bath, bi-folds that open and you can watch the stars. The area has some fantastic walks, no need to drive far. Very welcoming hosts.

Where to begin.
Where do I begin ? From that stunning view, down the rolling green hills, through the trees to the bay & mountains in the background, to the flower lined entrance path, to the gorgeous timber spiral staircase, to the huge downstairs bedroom, with leather chaise, and fur rugs and electric blanket, to the bathroom with beautiful white mosaic wall tiles, to the heated bathroom floors and towel rack and huge bath, to the, oh so tasteful decor through out, to that view again through floor to ceiling windows in the bedroom & upstairs living area, to the fantastic books for reading , to the well applianced kitchen where everything is thought of, to the heating throughout. Absolutely unfaultable.

Rooms with a view
We were amazed at the beautiful views as we reached the upstairs lounge and kitchen. Spiral stair case but most things could be left downstairs in the luxurious bedroom. Beautiful view from the bath with candles aiding the romantic setting. Fully stocked kitchen including pantry with oils, vinegars, spices etc. Road to door a little tricky but we had been advised about that.

In 2006 myself and my husband Paul visited Tasmania for the first time as tourists from Western Australia and became besotted. Four years later we finally moved to Tasmania - lock, stock and barrel - and it was the best decision we ever made! We feel so incredibly blessed to live here on 100 acres in one of the most beautiful places on earth. So much so we felt we should share this beautiful place and space with others. If you run out or need a particular ingredient I am bound to have it somewhere!!!
