Great rustic private beach bungalow
Check in was easy. WiFi didn’t work at first but was resolved within 24 hours. The hotel next door was closed so the nearest food is almost a mile away and a little pricey, but delicious. Although the hotel next door was closed the owners live there. The bungalow had everything we needed. We loved the privacy and the simple living. The owner is very transparent about the sargassum. The sargassum was abundant while we were there and after we cleared an area of the beach sand fleas and ants were a nuisance but manageable. The house had ants, spiders, lizards, scorpions, and huge cockroaches, which we expected so it was no big deal to us. After all it is a tropical undeveloped beautiful land, just be prepared. Mahaual is about 6 miles so we were thankful we rented a car from Mérida airport. The drive was about 5 hours but worth it. Communication with the caretakers and owner was prompt and effective. We LOVED Mahahual and the area. We loved the bungalow and would stay there again. It was a beautiful experience and I am thankful we had the opportunity to live simply for two weeks and we really didn’t miss our urban amenities. We learned how to survive without a coffee maker, toaster, and microwave. I am very proud. Every meal we had in Bacalar and Mahaual was delicious. No TV was brilliant. If you are looking for a private, quiet, no nonsense vacation this is it.

Great place off the beaten path!
My daughter and I stayed at Casa Caribe for 5 nights. It was awesome!! Right on the beach! You fall asleep listening to the ocean. There was some thick seaweed that seems to migrate the coast. When it was at the house we went to Mahahaul and snorkeled there. This is a great place if you like to be away from the crowds. We visited many places most people do not see. The owner, Loretta, gave us detailed directions for day excursions, making sure to point out things to stop and so. The carets Peter and Gabby were great as well as the attentiveness of Loretta. She really cares about your experience there. I will definitely go again!

Good place if you are into remote areas
I specifically chose this location as it was far from the village (about 10km south). Renting a car would be extremely helpful. The place can house 4 people in a reasonable comfort. It has everything you need. Unfortunately the seaweed situation was very bad - even the water entrance was impossible. However the owner informed me about the situation 10 days prior and offered a full refund which I rejected and went anyway. We did some ruin sites exploration as well as some surrounding areas. I am extremely impressed with the owner's honesty and integrity. As far as visiting this part of Mexico - too much of an advance planning can be actually bad. Nobody can predict waves and seaweed. So the better way to go is on a short notice after some good reports from the location. Otherwise you are risking some unforeseen circumstances. 2015 and 2018 saw some huge seaweed outbreaks. But under normal conditions the place looks gorgeous. I hope to go there again. Cheers!

Good centralized location
It is a charming little hut conveniently located close to Mahahual and not too bad if a trek to Bacalar and Chetumal. The house is quite comfortable but the chairs and couch cushions have seen better days. Unfortunately during our stay many of the beaches were over run with Algae and the winds were extremely strong. Nonetheless we did find clearer beaches not too far and made the best of our trip. A vehicle is an absolute must in this area, but the roads at fairly easy to traverse, even the beach road which originally it was suggested not to use is completely passable with a regular car. The only really sad thing is that the Costa Maya coast seems to be on a current that brings in tons of plastic garbage so that most beaches are covered in plastic debris. We almost wish every human could see it and perhaps become more conscious of where they dispose of their garbage.

AMAZING
The bungalow was perfect. It was secluded with our own private beach. Runs on solar power which we appreciate. The hosts, Gabi and Peter, were the most accommodating and fabulous chefs and absolutely loved their dog, Max. The bungalow was equipped and decorated to the smallest of detail giving it charm. It was quite without tourists and ability to submerge into the Mayan culture. We could not have wished for anything more. One of our most memorable vacations ever! Sherry & John

Right on the beach, which is virtally private
We loved having a house right on the beach! It's quiet and well kept. There are several places to hang a couple of hammocks on the covered porch or under the palm trees. The beds are in the loft of the thatched roof and we stayed fairly cool from ocean breezes and provided fans. Well equipped kitchen with a full stove and oven. Would have preferred some non-plastic dishes, bowls and glasses, but I can understand rental issues. It's not a long drive into the town of Mahahual (20 minutes?) which is fairly touristy now, but the folks are friendly and not too hard sell. The water is calm because of the reef protection, so swimming was delightful! Didn't see much in terms of underwater life, but I think we had to get quite a bit further out (we were there around Jan. 1). If you want to avoid crowds, relax and swim, this is the place for you! Loretta is great about communication and sends out a very comprehensive "guide" to her house and area. Thanks!

Everything we were hoping for and more!
Loretta, your casa was amazing! We had a great time snorkeling, collecting sea beans, and playing with our new friend Max. There was plenty of room and the property managers were extremely helpful. Everyone that stays here needs to try their shrimp! Thanks again for allowing me and my family create memories at your casa!

After many trips to the Riviera Maya since honeymooning there is 1991, we longed for the quiet beaches and authentic Caribbean, away from the big resorts and crowded beaches. So in June 2007 we searched for a quiet costal property. After researching the Yucatan Peninsula online, we stumbled upon the quiet fishing village of Mahahual that had just built a cruise ship port. After making our way to Mahahual and upon first glance at the light house and traveling the sand-road through town along the turquoise sea, we immediately fell in love with the place. We have had many enjoyable trips here with family and friends, enjoying the quiet beach, beautiful water and friendly people of Mahahual.
