Cottage on a private lake in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia

Remotely nestled in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia, you will find this charming lake cottage. Enjoy days and evenings above a picturesque six acre lake with backdrop of a beautiful mountain range. Spend time fishing, paddle boating, blazing a trail into the woods, or relaxing with a good book. Take the time to unwind and get away from it all.

Guests are sure to enjoy a memorable vacation in this fully furnished, two bedroom/one and a half bath cottage. The main/master bedroom has a queen sized bed, while the second bedroom upstairs is furnished with 2 twin beds and a private balcony and half bath. The cottage will sleep 5 very comfortably. The large living room is furnished with a large comfortable couch and a gas log fireplace. A table for 4 is off to the side of the living room, but also next to the kitchen which is all open. There is a bar/counter where 2 people can set and eat and also be part of the kitchen area. The living/kitchen area is all one big room with a step down from the kitchen. The cottage is equipped with everything you need to make your get away from it all perfect.

Situated on the six acre lake, guests can enjoy the morning just sitting on the deck drinking coffee and listening to the birds sing or watch for a fish to jump up out of the water. Later go for a hike in the woods, or go for a ride in the paddle boat. There is a canoe to enjoy as well. Fishing is permitted as catch and release only with artificial lures and barbless hooks. There are 2 paddle boards to enjoy on the lake, and if the day is really hot, you may want to take a swim in the lake. The water is cool, but very refreshing.

Spend the day away, enjoying nearby attractions. The cottage is approximately 10 miles for Mt Airy, NC, the hometown of Andy Griffith. Visit the Andy Griffith Museum, which houses the world's largest collection of Andy Griffith memorabilia.

The Blue Ridge Parkway is only about 12 miles away. Fancy Gap is just off the parkway, and has several antique stores and gift shops. The Deli Gap Restaurant is highly recommended for a great lunch.

The Yadkin Valley Wine Country, which has thirty three wineries, has several wineries just a few miles away. Five of them are located in the Mt Airy area. Ask us for recommendations or visit for listings of all the wineries.

Several quality golf courses are located only minutes from the cottage: Primland Golf Course, Meadows of Dan, VA, Cross Creek Country Club, Mt Airy, NC,

Perfect for Family of 4
We had a sporting event in Mt Airy and decided to make a weekend out of it. This place is 22 min from downtown Mr Airy, an easy drive. Remote but neighbors are right next door. Even though it was cold we still caught several bluegills in the pond at the dock. My 13 yr old was so excited . There is a nice canoe and paddle boat to use. The cottage is quaint but had everything we needed. 2 twin beds upstairs with 1/2 bath and queen bed downstairs next to full bath. Kitchen stocked with everything. Nice fireplace and very nice new grill. Would stay here again for sure

Very tranquil
Truly a great place to decompress, and the scenery was amazing. Nestled within the towns Ararat is this beautiful piece of property with this fantastic cabin. Sharon, the property manager was extremely helpful, since this was only my second time using VRBO, and I can say I am hooked. Well worth a stay.

Our stay
I was only semi private. There’s neighbors right next door. The toliet upstairs needs to be fixed and used bar hand soap was left in soap dishes for us to use 😞. There should be hand soap pump bottles to use instead. That would be more sanitary

Great Get Away
This little cottage was perfect! Exactly has description and pictures show. My son (14 years old) LOVES to fish and he had a blast catching bass and bluegill. The view is fantastic! The check in process and communication from Sharon was EXCELLENT. We plan to make this a yearly trip. We're aiming for Late fall next year to see the leaves change. Thanks again for a great experience!

Relaxing vacation
This was better than the pictures shown on the website. Cabin was clean and the lake was spectacular. The only suggestion we have is there should be screens in all the windows and especially the door to the deck. The evenings were cool and if we had screens it would have been nice to sleep with the country air coming inside the cabin. Besides, it will save on the elecrtic bill as we could have turned of the AC !

Nice getaway
We had a lovely Fourth of July with two of our granddaughters and pups. The granddaughters really enjoyed the SUPs. It was nice to be able to bring our dogs to Mt Airy and found the town to be very dog friendly. We enjoyed river tubing near by and relaxing at the lovely house. The house is furnished with everything we needed and made preparing meals easy. I would definitely recommend staying here and look forward to coming back in the fall.

Our piece of Heaven
This isn't our first trip to the cabin and it will not be our last! The sounds of nature, the fishing, the seclusion, being one with nature, the paddle boat, canoe and standing surf boards are an amazing experience as well. The cabin is equipped with all kinds of utensils, kitchen plates, bowls, towels, blankets, pillows and so much more. It is super clean and just what the doctor ordered. If the owner ever wants to sell this property, we'd be happy to purchase it and keep its love of nature, respect of wildlife, the enjoyment of catch and release when fishing, as well as the cleanliness for ourselves as well as continuing to share it with others. If there is ever the option, please give us a call. Thank you once again for sharing your cabin with us, and we will see it again very soon.

Quiet & Peaceful place to get away from it all!
My hubby & I recently stayed at this lovely cottage & it was wonderful! It's secluded & quiet in a beautiful setting. The cottage is spacious & has 2 sliding glass doors opening the livingroom up to the deck that overlooks a grogeous lake & cool breezes. We spent our days going to Antique Stores & eating at some really good local restaurants in Mt. Airy aka Mayberry, NC which is only a 15 minute drive from the cottage. I highly reccomend this place & hope to go back again soon for a girl's weekend.

Had an amazing stay with my partner and two of our friends. All though cold, the lake was absolutely breathtaking. We used the canoe regularly and also enjoyed the fireplace as well as the grill. We hope to return soon and I very much recommend this for anyone who is looking for a remote cabin getaway

About the host

Hosted by Sharon Poindexter

Host profile image
Ken Holdaway built this lovely cottage and the 6 acre lake. Ken has lived in Ararat, VA for over 40 years and is a hobby orchardist. His home and orchard is less than 1/4 miles from the cottage. Sharon Poindexter is his significant other and is managing this VRBO site.

We love people and know that we will enjoy getting to know the visitors to this beautiful setting in our mountains. Also, since we are so close by, visits to the orchard house is very possible. At the orchard house you will see several kinds of animals (peacocks, chickens, cats, etc) in addition to all the trees. The orchard has several varieties of fruit trees. There are peach, apple, pear, plum, apricot, fig trees and many different kinds of berries.

What makes this property unique

The most unique thing about the cottage is that it truly is away from it all. There is one neighbor that lives close enough to make you feel safe, for those who might not really want to be that far away from it all. You are still close to everything you need, groceries, gas, etc.
