About this property

Great time to detox and get away for a break.

Our romantic setting allows you to relax in the spa bath or by the outdoor fire pit, here in Valley View cabin. Enjoy peaceful, panoramic views across the Williams River valley & the Barrington Tops from the verandah.

A spacious bedroom with a queen-sized bed, ensuite bathroom with spa bath & overhead shower. Cater for yourself in the fully equipped kitchen with full-sized stove & fridge, or head into town to one of a number of eateries. In winter snuggle up in the warmth of reverse cycle air conditioning and electric blankets.

The bathroom has a spa bath with a shower over it and there is a solar hot water system, with a booster switch near the front door. A half hour will reheat the water on those overcast or wintery days, so there is always plenty to go round.

Enjoy the quiet or make use of the TV & DVD player in the roomy lounge area. Sit on the verandah while your dinner cooks on the bar-b-que nearby. This cabin is well equipped for any couple.

Visit the little creek at the edge of the property or the dam, walk the Lemon tree walk, or just sit and enjoy the views from sunrise to starlight. Dawn and dusk sees the local wallabies gather and the many birds sing and feed. At night your own outdoor fire pit gives you a cosy place to sit under the stars.

Less than 15 minutes from Dungog, 2 kilometres from the Williams River with a popular swimming hole by the bridge or a picturesque place to picnic. Have a day trip to the Barrington Tops National Park (30 minutes to the closest walk) and as one of only 3 buildings on 100 acres (mostly bush, partly cleared) means there is something for everyone.

Please note:
Dungog is a high rainfall area but whenever staying in the country and planning to have a fire it is important to check the local conditions. Search Search' NSW Rural Fire Service- Fire danger ratings and total fire bans' for current fire bans- we are region '3' on the map.

Wonderful and cosy country cabin stay
Had a great Valentines weekend here with my partner. Max and Bronwyn were great to communicate with and left clear instructions in the cabin for us to use the ammenities such as aircon and spa. Property was really clean and well looked after and surrounding country provided beautiful views and a relaxing atmosphere. Would come here again!

Ideal place for nature lovers to relax
The indoors was very comfortable and spacious with everything we needed. The best part was the windows and veranda all around, allowing us to appreciate the views of hills and sunsets and enjoy seeing the many bird and marsupial visitors. We had a lovely time exploring the property and using it as a base to explore more widely.

Two night stay
Very relaxed location - Easy access to forest etc. River appears to be on the property, but about 10mins drive for swim ( nice pool ). Fosterton bakery not open. Honey available on roadside. Everything you need in Dungog - Fire wood just off roundabout . Nice drive from Newcastle.

Perfect spot to rest and recharge
We booked the Valley View Cabin for 2 nights, while attending a wedding in Dungog (approx 15 min drive). This was EXACTLY what we needed to recharge our social batteries and ground ourselves after a busy week. Max was very welcoming and the check-in/out process was seemless. Highlights for us were the spa after a long day on our feet, the micro bat doing zoomies around the verandah, the different bird songs and zero traffic noise, Bronwyn's book about nature in Newcastle surrounds, and wallaby watching. We'd love to come back and spend more time enjoying the area in future - you should visit too!

Relaxing Peace and Quiet
Cabin was the perfect size for two people. Amenities were great, with everything we needed to cook our meals. Decor is a bit outdated, the towels were scratchy and the dye pattern was a little offputting, but the bed was comfy and there were plenty of blankets to keep warm and cosy. Heating was very efficient. Overall we enjoyed our stay.

Such a peaceful and beautiful location. Very comfortable cabin with everything needed for a wonderful break. To wake every morning to the bell birds amongst the trees and assorted other wildlife singing amongst the trees was special. The sky was clear to view the stars away from the city lights.

Fantastic weekend escape
This was perfect. My son loves camping and the outdoors and I like comfort. The cabin was the perfect answer. The fire pit was great for marshmallows and damper and scary stories. Great birdsong morning and night and lots of other cool local animals including frogs at the nearby river. We were both sad to leave and I’ll be amazed if we don’t return very soon!

Lovely hosts - beautiful space
It was truly a wonderful experience. The serenity and the quietness and the beautiful birds, and all the wildlife were amazing. We stayed in a mountain view cottage, which has a view of the surrounding forest and down the end of the Veranda. You get the view of the valley as well. Was worth every cent! One of the hosts Max was absolutely lovely. He was very helpful and he was just great to talk to.

Would highly recommend
We had a 3 night stay in the Valley View cabin. Was a wonderful experience. The tranquillity was what we needed. The cabin itself had everything you need. The bed was comfortable. You could just laze around and listen to the birds, or go for a walk through the multiple paths around the property. We went swimming in the river, under the near by bridge. There were others staying in the other cabins, but you didn't hear them It was like we were the only people there. We would go back in a heartbeat. Definitely go and try Valley View

About the host

Hosted by Bronwyn/Max Greive

Host profile image
Bronwyn & Max are both amazed with the beauty of nature and the resourcefulness of people. We met out the back of Bourke (country NSW) & been happy living in the city, but are pleased to be able to get back to the country.
As you see we are colourful people who are both artists who love to create, Max in wood and Bronwyn in paints, textiles, & lots of other medium, selling their work locally in the Hunter. Some of their work can be found throughout the property as well as Bronwyn's in the local Dungog by Design.
Max is also a labyrinth enthusiast & works as counsellor, while Bronwyn is studying & teaching in the art sector at the University of Newcastle.
We enjoy and have spent a lot of our lives helping people (ourselves included) connect with community, family, partners, and nature, all while encouraging people to be creative and go deeper.
So there are 2 labyrinths on the property- 1 marked out on the slope as you come up to the house, & the other laid into the ground on the left of the driveway down to the cabins. Feel free to walk one or both of them. Take your time.
We also run creative nature & creative spiritual workshops & retreats here & elsewhere .

Why they chose this property

This is a 30 year dream come true- we have wanted to have a country place where individuals, families and groups connect with people, nature, creativity and community. We like to gather our children and grandchildren, parents and wider family here and want others to experience that too. Finding a cedar clad place on 100 acres was amazing- there were good 'bones' in place to create a charming, welcoming and artistic feel, a place where there can be nurture of the land, relationships and the soul.
Most of the property, while secondary growth, is natural bushland with various habitats; bush, dry sclerophyll and wet gullies, creek, grasslands, steep and more gentle hillsides; so we have cut some walks through for people to enjoy and connect with it themselves. While we and others have spotted over 30 different bird species we don't believe we have seen them all yet. As well as birds the wallabies are so wonderful, grazing most morning and evenings, often with their joeys and these are less skittish the longer we are there.
Bronwyn's great grandmother was born around this area, so there are other ways it is a re-connection for us as well.
Fosterton Retreat also inspires our creativity and we want to be able to encourage this in others while providing a place and opportunities for personal, relational, communal, environmental transformation & restoration. Fosterton Retreat gives us a chance to do all this.

What makes this property unique

It's hard to go past the clean air, the great views, the wallabies grazing, the numerous native birds & the 100 acres these cabins sit in with different habitats, eg: a wet gully, a hilly grassland & magnificent views. BUT the buildings themselves also attracted us. We fell in love with these cabins as each are based on the traditional Australian settler cabin, with good-sized rooms, dado rails, verandahs to help keep it cool, & provide a place to enjoy the view or the breeze. Being clad in cedar (originally red cedar was common in this area) is a bonus.
We are putting our own touch on this place, welcoming, practical touches- like places to put your bags in each room, as well as artistic touches, that make this even more unique- like themed rooms, carefully chosen artworks and colourful doona covers that add to the effect of the decor.
As we work to establish more plants in and around the property, these are purposely chosen for their suitability for the area and to attract more wildlife, especially birds. Mostly we are putting in plants indigenous to this area, but there we have included a couple of others for their therapeutic and symbolic nature.
This is not a sterile environment and will not look or feel like every other house you've been to (maybe like no other house you've been to) & we think that is great.
