About this property

Upscale 1926 C&O Train Caboose Tiny House Minutes to Waynesville & Asheville

Just 10 miles from the Great Smoky Mountain National Park, this 1926 wooden train caboose has been transformed into one of the most unique vacation destinations in the area. The caboose cottage itself is located in a private rural area. It is known as The Caboose at Station 451 or Station 451 for short. It is minutes to I-40, about 30 minutes to Asheville, 20 Miles to Tennessee and a mere 1.5 hours to Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge, TN.

We are very close to hiking, waterfalls, the Blue Ridge Parkway, fly fishing, tubing, kayaking, shopping, fine dining, Harrah's Casino in Cherokee, art galleries, and theater...you name it and it's a short drive away! Western North Carolina is home to "something for everyone". We feel that Station 451 offers a similar feel. If you are looking for upscale our boutique style experience in a vintage caboose should definitely suit your fancy. If you are more into a natural experience make the most of it by enjoying the outdoors, cooking on the grill and our simple yet romantic outdoor shower. At Station 451 we combine a unique caboose, bath house, patio and farm land into a tiny house you'll never forget.

This bright red story book caboose was part of the Chesapeake and Ohio Railway. It's construction was likely started in 1926 and finished in 1927. This C&O caboose was numbered as 90885. The caboose was fully functional when we purchased it in 2015. It was purchased from a local non-profit organization known as Craggy Mountain Line in Woodfin, NC. The caboose sets atop authentic 1920's railroad tracks and joins to the incredible bath house also known as the Depot.

The caboose offers a queen sized bed, memory foam mattress, premium down alternative pillows & comforter, tableware, glassware, silverware (service for 4), space saving dining table, central heat and air, luggage rack and coat rack, games, magazines, Smart TV, high speed cable internet, sink, fire extinguisher, dishwasher, refrigerator, basic cooking ware, toaster oven, coffee pot, complimentary paper towels, dishwasher soap and hand selected locally brewed beer. The couch easily coverts into a full size bed. Linens will be conveniently stored in the couch storage bins and should be used before sleeping on the couch.

Station 451's custom built bath house boasts a large walk-in shower featuring double shower heads, private water closet, double vanity with vessel sinks, premiere decor & cabinetry, cotton linens, over sized bathrobes Hazelwood Soap Company's hand-made bath and body products that use the finest of natural ingredients and essential oils, ironing board and iron, hair dryer and toiletries, arm chair and armoire. Front load high efficiency washer and dryer are also available for extended stays.

Quality and highly detailed construction in the bath house includes a strategic post & beam style, soaring tongue and groove ceilings, natural light enhancing window design, double opening french doors, additional relaxation space for extra enjoyment, LED powered mercury glass lighting, bathroom fan with Bluetooth speaker and central heating & air. The exterior of the structure includes fiber cement siding and locally harvested poplar bark and a tin roof to enjoy a relaxing rain storm. All these special features were brought together by the highest quality Haywood County businesses and contractors.

Outdoor recreational areas include an Appalachian style shower, slate rock sidewalks, paver patio, pondless waterfall, solar lighting, fire pit with complimentary wood bundle, propane grill with side burner, over sized covered porch with comfortable furnishings, porch swing, electric fireplace, outdoor Smart TV and high speed cable internet. All these amenities plus gorgeous mountain views and professional landscaping designed with a majority of native plants for your enjoyment.

Since Station 451 is located in a rural area you may be visited by our friendly goats, chickens or dogs. Wild animal sightings most commonly include raccoons, possum, deer, field mice, bats, turkey, bear and elk. Safety is our top priority so please enjoy pets and animals at your own risk and remember we have a pet free policy to insure the safety our beloved pets and yours too.

At Station 451 we strive to create an awesome experience that will create memories for a life time. We wish all our visitors a happy stay and hope you will respect Station 451 as much as we respect and appreciate your business. Please take care of this gem like it was your own. Because our structures consist of mostly wood we are very strict about our smoking policy. There is no smoking allowed in any of our structures; however, smoking is allowed at the fire pit. All cigarettes will be discarded in the fir pit only. If you fail to follow the policy you will be charged for damage.

We look forward to creating an experience of a life time and hope you enjoy your stay at Station 451!

The cutest caboose ever!!!
Is there anything not to love about this property?! The location was fantastic and the accommodations were incredible. The separated bath house was such a nice change of pace - it made me be thoughtful about just slowing down, putting my luggage in a different location and cracking a beer and relaxing. Brooke was amazing. Hurricane Helene was on the doorstep and we chose to head out early - Brooke offered potentially lifesaving advice by recommending we not continue on into Asheville due to lower lying elevation. We are planning to come back to this area for a web redemption of our original itinerary and will 100% be back at the caboose.

The location was perfect! You felt away from it all while still having the convenience of being close to major higways. The bathhouse was beautiful and the caboose was so cute and cozy. Brooke was an excellent host and I appreciated her responsiveness.

Amazing stay at the Caboose
We stayed for a few nights on spring break with our two train loving boys. Our stay was amazing and our kids could not have been happier! This is one of those rentals that goes the extra mile with little touches to make your stay amazing. From local beer and sparkling flavored water in the fridge, to plenty of firewood and a super nice bathroom with two shower heads, robes and slippers all the amenities were enjoyed by our group. One of our sons even tried the outdoor shower and got a kick out of it! The hammock swing was amazing and now I want to buy one for our home. Loved the outdoor tv area as well. And I would be remiss if I didn’t mention the waterfall that provided a soothing backdrop to it all! We definitely would return, GREAT stay!

Wonderful stay at The Caboose at Station 451
My wife and I went with our children and spent three nights at The Caboose at Station 451. What a unique and beautiful place to stay! Kids loved sleeping in a train caboose. Property had lots of trees for privacy, great outdoor space and deck with outdoor fire pit, grill, and TV. The owner, Brooke, has thought of every need. We appreciated the snacks and drinks at check in! Very clean unit. We would certainly visit again!

Station 451
The caboose and station were beautiful, peaceful, private and conveniently located. We saw many wonderful smokey's attractions but wished we had spent more time at the caboose. We really enjoyed the firepit after our late-night returns without the worry of quite hour restrictions. Thank you very much :-) Mike & Jenn

This was such a cool property. Close enough to Waynesville and Asheville, but far enough away to enjoy peace and quiet. It’s everything that the description said it was.

This property is exactly as shown. Absolutely beautiful both inside and out. Secluded but still accessible. Brooke was extremely quick with responding to any email or text. Only a few miles to entrance into the Smoky Mountains where we saw a lot of elk. Would definitely recommend staying here.

Red Caboose in the Great Smoky Mountains
This was an amazing stay. The Caboose is authentic and well equipped. Welcoming hospitality is found throughout this property. Pay very close attention to the owner’s directions for the road leads you right to the Red Caboose with its welcoming large wrap around covered porch, comfortable beautiful bath house and a natural waterfall immediately behind the caboose. This was the most comfortable sleep and time away I have experienced in a long time. I know where the world is quiet and the welcome is exemplary. I will return .

Could not recommend this place enough. The attention to detail throughout the entire experience was spot on (bluetooth speakers, double shower heads, drinks, soap/shampoo). Even the level of detail with landscaping and design was exceptional. It is perfect for something like an anniversary because it has the luxurious vibe
