Overall it’s a nice place although it could use some updated amenities.
Nice home in a nice neighborhood. Very clean and well kept. It is an older home so there were some things that were somewhat antiquated—the outlets and the cooktop for example. Aside from those few issues, it was a very nice stay for us.

Older house in central location
The location was all for our family as we celebrated our mother's birthday. We were able to walk to Piedmont through the lovely neighborhood and were also walking distance to Safeway. Few outlets and mustiness betray the house's age and man, that tragic child's chair in the small bedroom has to go. There was no soap in the half bath and a call and email to the owner asking if there was any in the house and for help finding the wifi code went unanswered the entire weekend. However, the linens were clean and there were abundant towels, we had fun playing the games we brought at the dining room table and hanging out in the living room and on the porch. One of us located the wifi and we took turns with plugging in electronics. The house worked for us.

Hidden Gem!
I stayed with a group of 5 ladies the weekend of March 23-25th. The house was BEAUTIFUL and such a joy to stay in. We loved cooking meals in the kitchen and enjoying the neighborhood. It was a quick, very walkable jaunt down to Piedmont and so close to the supermarket. The house itself was beautifully appointed and we never felt cramped. Judy was always very prompt in responding anytime I reached out to her. I admit, I did not read about the parking situation well-it's NOT the driveway out front, but around the side through a gate. Overall, a wonderful stay. I would recommend this home to anyone and appreciated Judy's responsiveness.

Great location, but the house is shabby. If you're looking for luxury, this is not the place.
The house was cozy, but old and shabby in areas. The heater worked great. Location is very convenient to Piedmont Ave, College Ave and Telegraph. The cleaners need to look up as well as down. Top of the refrigerator was filthy (often a place to store food), cobwebs on the walls. Some instructions for the house were given in an email, but nothing in the house. We lost power and didn't know where the fuse box was. Found 3 in 1 oil in a random cupboard to fix a very squeaky bed. Worked well for a girls weekend.

Charming craftsman
We had a nice 3-night stay in this house with our two young sons (5 and 2 years old). The house isn't updated, but there's a lot of charm in its original layout and decor, and everything functions fine. The main two bedrooms are good-sized, and the third is a tiny room off of the kitchen (it took me a couple minutes to find it), and it was perfectly cozy for our 5-year-old son. One minor complaint is that the mattresses are older and very soft, but overall, we really enjoyed our stay, and we'd recommend this house to others.

New roof...
The house was terrific, plenty of room to accommodate the 5 adults in our group, and in a nice location. We would have rated it 5 stars except for the nerve of the owner to have the roof replaced during our stay! We were contacted the day before we arrived letting us know that there would be work on the roof and that there would be "very little noise inside the house." We assumed that meant a minor repair or an assessment for future work. She said work would be Thursday and Friday of our three day stay and asked what time in the morning work could start -- we agreed to a 10 am start. The work extended into Saturday and began at 8 am Saturday morning. When work was going on, it was not possible to have a conversation in the house because of the noise. She had no business renting this home during a major repair and accepted our reservation and charged our card before having a conversation with us. We requested a 50% refund. Without further conversation she told us by email that she would refund $100. This is not someone we would do business with again.

Amazing home away from home
This was the perfect place for my family to stay on vacation. The first day we got there we walked down the street to both the coffee shop and the grocery store to caffeinate and prepare for our stay. It is also with in waking distance from a few fun restaurants we tried during our stay. The house it self was quite comfortable and had all of the accoutrements we needed to make breakfasts in the mornings and hang out together in the evenings around the dining room table or tv for relaxing. It was convenient to have the laundry right there and easy enough to get it done before quiet hours. It was also nice to have the chairs out front to sit in during our sunny and 75 degree vacation. I emailed Judy a few times and she was always quick to respond and wonderful to work with.

Owner is non-responsive and house is disappointing
Our biggest complaint would be about the owner. After we paid the security deposit, Judy never responded to any of our voicemails or emails regarding the final payment. We had to contact HomeAway with our questions. We even had to involve HomeAway to get our security deposit back. She did not provide any good customer service. With regards to the house, it is not mentioned that the washer/dryer was not located in the house, but in the backyard under the stairs. The stove is ancient. The majority of the windows did not have screens so a bird flew in while we were there and left a present on one of the beds. In general, this house is old and outdated. I would not recommend this property to anyone.

Lovely house in a convenient location.
This is a lovely, old house in a convenient part of Oakland. We had plenty of space for 6 (4 adults 2 children), parking was never a problem compared with other neighborhoods, there is a grocery store and lots of great restaurants in walking distance. The owner was friendly and attentive and we wished we had contacted her with questions more promptly. if you are staying with an elderly person, access through the front of the house includes a sturdy stair case. The kitchen is big and well-equipped. All together a great experience!

This property was awful.
Additionally, the remote did not work. Batteries were dead. Had to replace at our expense. Rear tv eventually worked but froze when trying to change the channel. This was the worst property that I have ever stayed in. EXTREMELY DISAPPOINTED AND DISSATISFIED!

The Mather Street house
We were very pleased with our two week stay in the house at Mather and Gilbert streets. The house is spacious and provided attractive spaces in the living and dining rooms; the beds were very comfortable. We especially appreciated the proximity to the Safeway just a block away and to interesting shops, and at least two book stores on Piedmont Avenue. If we return to Oakland next year, I hope the house will be available. We enjoyed being in the house and found the neighborhood a great place to walk with easy access to everything we wanted to do. I recommend the house with enthusiasm.

Beautiful, relaxing retreat
I had been looking at this house to stay at during my daughter's graduation for a year prior to renting it and was not disappointed! The description and pictures of the house were accurate and the location was great. Grocery store just a couple blocks away and Judy left very helpful notes for everything. The house was immaculate, the layout very relaxing. Beautiful back yard complete with BBQ and outdoor furniture. Washer/dryer, dishwasher, wifi, and all the amenities of home making us feel very much at home. Judy was wonderful and available to us if we needed anything or had any questions. We had family members from Florida, Michigan, Rhode Island and Boston in town for my daughters graduation. We rented a car but you would not really need one as the Bart is only a 20 minute walk from the house. Day trip to Castello di Amorosa, a day at wild cat canyon park along with the graduation were the highlights of our trip. Other members of our group also went to Alcatraz. We wished we could have stayed longer as we just seemed to brush the surface. This house is gem and would not hesitate to recommend to a friend or relative. Thank you Judy!

Great Stay for Three Generations!
The Mather House was a great rental for three generations--my parents, my husband and me, and our two-and-a-half-year old. The house is beautiful and historic, and located easy walking or driving distance to shopping, great restaurants, parks, etc. The dining room table and the front porch were great places for small gatherings of family and friends. Being on a single floor made everything simple.

Comfortable close in Craftsman
Well appointed and clean. A short walk to Rockridge and Piedmont Ave. Very spacious and well kept in a safe old neighborhood full of nice homes and gardens. Not having a car on this visit was not a problem as Bart and buses are within 10 minutes. Judy was a helpful host and quick to reply to any questions I had. Would definitely recommend this Bungalow to others.

Great House with easy access to the city.
questioRockridge Bungalow was well situated to walk to a very nice shopping area, 4 blocks away and a grocery store 1 block away. For the more adventurous a hike in the cemetery 5 blocks away provided a spectacular view of Oakland, the bay and San Francisco. The beds were very comfortable and the kitchen well supplied with cooking and serving items. The weather was perfect for grilling in the large backyard. Enjoyed the stay. The owner was very responsive to all ns and with suggestions for dining. Hope to return on the next extended visit.

Super Location!
I would recommend this home to any family traveling to the Bay Area together, as it was a good bonding experience. It is walking distance to groceries and there is a really cool Tiki Bar close by as well. The neighborhood was welcoming and we felt safe walking the streets. We attended a wedding in Berkeley so being 10 minutes away was a plus, but it also allowed us to visit San Francisco a lot since it was just across the bridge. We loved the beautiful wood decor, the comfortable beds and couches, and found ourselves lacking nothing during our stay. Judy was accommodating and friendly. What can I say, an A+ for all that we needed!

Comfy Craftsman
Very comfortable stay over Thanksgiving. We know the area well as our daughter lives close by. Very convenient to all areas including Piedmont and College. We especially loved going up Piedmont street to walk in the beautiful cemetery, where from the top of the hill there is one of the best views of the Bay Area. The house was spacious and well kept. Hope to return

Lovely,convenient house
This house is in a very pleasant area of Oakland within walking distance of Piedmont Street which has grocery stores as well as some interesting other shops and restaurants. The living and dining rooms are attractively decorated and very comfortable. The kitchen is equipped with sufficient dishes, glasses, including wine glasses and silverware to serve 8. While there, we had a small gathering with some of the family we were visiting and the space worked very well. We would use the house again if we were in the area.

Wonderful stay in Rockridge. Returning guests.
We stayed in the house a year ago and have just re-scheduled another week in February 2014. The house is well maintained and very roomy. The wood paneling is just beautiful. The bedroom was cozy and the bathroom and kitchen very well kept. Everything was in order as described. The weather didn't cooperate so we couldn't take advantage of the outdoors. The location is great...you can walk to the shopping center and have easy access to surrounding areas in Oakland. We love being so close to Piedmont Avenue also. We didn't get to meet Judy. We'd recommend the house.

Nice area, house with character, close to shopping areas and restaurants
We rented the house for 2 weeks in August/September 2013. The house is conveniently located close to Pleasant Valley Road where there is a Safeway and Starbucks. Also, walking distance (8-10mins) to Piedmont Avenue and College Avenue where there are many small stores, restaurants and coffee places and of course the up and coming Temescal area. We liked receiving the NY Times on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. You can sit on the porch, drink your coffee, read the paper and be part of life in this area. It is a safe area with plenty of parking available (our rental SUV did not fit the parking space in the backyard). The photos on the website are accurate and the house has lots of character, it is spacious and is older, which we liked. We enjoyed our stay. There were a couple of things that we did not like and that we will take with us next time we will rent a house. There was a unit below the house that was rented out twice to people during our stay. Eventhough we don't mind bumping into strange people in the backyard, we did not like the fact that we could hear the people downstairs. One night a baby cried, another early morning there was a small child talking and we could also hear when water was being used. Also, the street it is on, is a thru way for cars, during the day it is noisy, at night it is fairly quiet. The walls of the house are thin and garbage days in the early mornings on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday were annoying were trucks backing up while beeping and dumpsters being emptied. Washer and dryer are old and dirty (we went to the Laundromat). We also didn't use the dishwasher because you would have to connect the tubes yourself (we handwashed). The backyard space is large, however badly maintained and messy (we only used the porch). Windows could only open a little bit which didn't allow for a lot of fresh air which we think is important in an old house. The 2.5% taken out of our deposit for VRBO charges the owner has, we didn't like (eventhough we knew about it and was stated in the contract). Lastly, the email communication of the owner, Judy, to us was very short and not very warm and not very welcoming. I rather have someone respond to my 2 week rental request with kindness and even a bit fluff. And eventhough there were these drawbacks we did have a very nice stay. Hope this review helps others.

Central Location & Close to a Coffee Shop!!!
This was our second stay at Judy's and we were very pleased again. We have two daughters who both loved their bedrooms (one in the small room, the other in a double bed) & we were in the bedroom between them. The washing facilities are a good thing - we came from England & had an empty case to buy things, so the less we brought with us, the more we could buy! This is within walkijng distance of the shops on College & the shops on Piedmont - both of which remind me of the independant shops in Brighton, Engtland. The house was comfortable, with cable tv, wi fi & lovely original features. The shower is powerful & hot - which is a must for me. There is also a big bath. The kitchen is large with a big fridge (which does make a few noises) & a stove. Overall we enjoyed our stay & the house was like a home from home, someweher we could relax after a long day sight seeing. There is a studio apartment below the house, my daughters found themselves trying to have a conversation with a very friendly German couple. We would come back again.

Not what I expected.
The house was very old and creeked every time you walked through the house. I had my three kids look for beds/bedrooms. It was listed that there werre sleeping for 5 and that was not the case. The 5th bed was a crib and my 4 year old was too big to sleep in it. I called the owner and after repeated calls, she finally answered. I explained my situation and she offered to get a rollaway bed there in a day for an additional fee. I was upset that we paid so much to stay there and my child was not accommodated. The laundry room was out back and the stairs to get back there were so steep I almost fell. The driveway could not accomodate our mini van as it was too small so we had to park on the street and lug our luggage up a flight of stairs.Downstairs tenant was a smoker and even though it clearly states NO Smoking, the owner basically told me to "mind my own business" when I mentioned it. Needless to say, it wasn't very relaxing. Would not recommend to small children or anyone who has alot of luggage. Plus side: It was convenient to shopping and the BART.

Rockridge Bungalow close to College and Piedmont
This property is spacious and very comfortable. Owner Judy was responsive and patient in replying to our needs. We were in Oakland to visit family and enjoy a new grandchild. This gave us a home away from home and the layout and furnishings made it easy for us to keep our grandbaby overnight. We had a car and appreciated the parking space but also walked everywhere. This location is equally convenient to College Ave and Piedmont. Would definitely recommend to friends and family.
