History of the Powledge House-
In 1844, Gideon Powledge moved to East Alabama from Georgia to receive title to his land on the west side of Chewacla Creek in what is now Lee County, Alabama. A Methodist Preacher, Powledge cleared the lands, set up a blacksmith shop and preached in the Methodist churches in the area. He is also credited with constructing a grist mill on the creek south of his home and later a cotton gin. In 1851 he built this federal-style historic home.
The design of the Powledge House is unique since it did not have a wide central hall as did many southern homes of the period. The style of this house could have been found in the Tidewater Virginia or the Carolinas as early as the time of the Revolutionary War or before. There are few such examples remaining today.
The story and half house originally had six rooms - four downstairs and two upstairs. The house has two unusual front windows, each section with nine panes and each window with glass sidelights. The two front doors are framed by sidelights and an overhead glass transom. The two front doors open into two large rooms which were originally multi-purposed rooms (parlors, bedrooms and eating areas). The two smaller rooms behind them were connected by a covered porch area. These smaller rooms have been restored as a kitchen and master bath. The porch area has been enclosed to provide a dining area. The original kitchen was away from the house, connected by a breezeway.
The back stairs lead to the upstairs sleeping area which was used by the children. One of the upstairs rooms has been converted to a bathroom and dressing room.
The fireplace mantel in the parlor on the right side of the house is of significant note because of its elaborate design. Perhaps Rev. Powledge felt that a man of his importance in the community needed to have a parlor that reflected his position.
The Powledge House is recognized by the Alabama Historical Commission as a Historic Landmark.

Amazing home

We absolutely loved staying at your property this past weekend. It is such a lovely home with so much character. And you go over and beyond to provide the guests with a fully stocked home and comfortable beds and furniture. We will absolutely keep you in mind if we need to rent a place in Auburn in the future.

Relaxing getaway

This was the perfect place to land on a busy graduation weekend. It is close to town, yet quiet and secluded. We enjoyed morning coffee on the deck and cool evenings on the screened porch. The house was nicely sized for 3 couples. Thank you for hosting us!

Perfect vacation spot!

The home was beautiful, comfortable and had everything needed for a great vacation. We had 7 people and everyone was comfortable and had plenty of room. It is close to the university which we easily traveled back and forth to but when we were at the house, we felt like we were in the woods and far from a city. We are already talking about returning next year. Amy is a great host and really easy to work with.

Thanksgiving

We had 10 family members from NY spend Thanksgiving weekend including the Iron Bowl game. Not one single complaint about this home and our terrific hosts. The house had everything provided as advertised and then some. We all would stay here again if the need arises. Thank you so much for this wonderful experience. WAR EAGLE- Nick

Most beautiful and relaxing get-a-way!!!

We met our kids and grandkids here for a week, we had a fabulous time! Powledge House is quiet, beautifully decorated, cozy and comfortable! We had a “goodie” sack awaiting us, stocked coffee bar, and new coloring/sticker books with new crayons and colored pencils for the kids! Accommodations were perfect for our family. Beautiful gardens, pond, and new deck. House is professionally decorated. Amy is great to work with and responded to all my questions. Wish we could’ve stayed longer, but we will be back! Thank you Amy!

Perfect spot for our wedding reception

My husband and I hosted our wedding reception here at the Powledge house. We had 50 guests, and it was PERFECT! The house was so warm and welcoming, and all of our guests were commenting on how great it looked. The yard was the perfect size for tents/tables to be set up and enjoyed. The details all around the house are so cute, from the flowers, to the interior decor. I enjoyed every single moment! It was a great memory that we will cherish forever. I would HIGHLY recommend the Powledge house and we hope to stay here again for many more years to come.

Amazing Graduation Weekend with family!

Powledge House is absolutely perfect for a family gathering (or Graduation Cookout)! We had the most amazing time celebrating our Auburn grad with family and friends. First, the setting is beautiful with manicured lawns, flowerbeds, a gazebo, pond and multiple patios around the house. The house is fantastic and extremely well stocked. There are two grills located near the gazebo which were fantastic for the family grill master to man! The kitchen has everything needed for a quiet night at home or even a larger gathering. The two main floor bedrooms are outfitted with king beds (very comfortable) and share a bathroom with large walk in shower. Upstairs has two queen beds and a bathroom as well. We had plenty of space to spread out even with two families. We also really loved being away from the busy-ness of Auburn with a quick drive in for events. Brian and Amy were great hosts and so helpful in planning our weekend.

Auburn graduation

Our family stayed her for our daughters graduation. It was perfect...close enough to campus but still far enough away to get some peace and quite, which was so nice during such a busy weekend. We hosted brunch for our daughter and a few of her friends before graduation and there is plenty of room. Loved the at home feeling of the home. Lots of room to spread out. Owner was always helpful and quick with answers for any questions. Just wished we had discovered before graduation. When we come back we will definitely stay again. Our daughters and her friends loved it so much I see them renting in the future for many happy years of returns to their alma mater.

Great Weekend (with one notable hiccup)

Overall, we were thrilled with the accommodations! The bedrooms were a perfect fit for our family of 10-12, plus a couple non-family extras. We are suckers for historical properties, and this one delighted us. Also loved the outdoor spaces and made great use of them. The one hiccup was that we had originally planned to use the grill and outdoor griddle. The grill needed charcoal, etc., which we didn't prepare for (our fault), but the griddle was rusty (and we didn't have time enough to clean it properly before meal time). So Plan B was to cook the meats in the oven, but, **NOTE TO MANAGER** the oven is not heating up to temperature. It took more than 3 hours to bake chicken breasts in the oven on 350F (which would only read out in Celsius), and the oven wouldn't actually offer any higher temp than the 350F. Then, it started giving "Error" and "Short Out" messages. (I'm trying to say that the oven is in need of repair or replacing.) The stove top performed just fine. We nonetheless enjoyed the property very much and have discussed returning!

Bridal Party Stay and Wedding Venue

The Powledge House was a beautiful home and Amy was incredibly helpful and communicative through the whole process. The owners thoughtfully decorated the home for my wife and her bridal party's stay and went above and beyond to have additional decorations available for our use for our wedding in the backyard! We loved being able to host our small wedding of 50 guests in the backyard. There was plenty of room for the ceremony up top and for the reception with 9 tables to the side of the home. We would absolutely stay here again!

Lovingly cared for historical home.

This property was certainly well supplied with everything needed for a short two days. Location was convenient and property was lovely. Too bad it was raining for both days we were there but we could visualize how nice it would be in good weather. Amy had been ill so communication was a little slow but I fully understood. January is cold and flu month! Thanks Amy for making our stay so comfortable!

Country home close to Auburn University

Amy and Bryan have a beautiful property located minutes from the university. It is very apparent how much time and energy was put into making this home a fantastic rental. The instructions are easy to follow, the kitchen and bathrooms are stocked and if you’ve forgotten something it’s probably there. The outdoor area is beautiful with the porch, pond, bbq spot, bonfire and games. If you like being minutes from the university but away from the chaos this is the place for you.

Auburn Gameday Getaway

We stayed at the property the weekend of the Auburn/MS. State game and could not have been happier. The property is located approximately 15 minutes south of the Auburn campus but we did not experience significant traffic issues as it is not one of the main arteries to get to the campus. The owners have provided everything imaginable to make the stay as guest friendly as possible with cooking supplies, coffee, toiletries, etc. Publix Grocery is located down the street along with several good restaurants. Great screened in porch and sitting areas outside as well as a very relaxing den. Additionally, the owners are very hands on in the communication process to ensure that the stay meets all your expectations. I would definitely stay at the Powledge house again.

Beautiful, secluded, historic home with all the amenities

We had an amazing time staying at Powledge House! We were a family of 6 visiting Auburn for the Texas A&M vs Auburn football game and there was plenty of room for all of us! The house is charming and clean and set back in its own private wooded lot that is serene and relaxing, but still just 5 minutes to town for groceries and restaurants. We had a great time playing games on the screened porch, sitting out by the fire pit making s'mores (which had a fire ready to light when we arrived!), cooking meals in the well stocked kitchen, and watching the giant TV from the comfy sofas in front of the fire! The beds were all wonderfully plush, with plenty of pillows and blankets to choose from. The bathrooms were spotless and cute, and the owner told me they are planning to update the upstairs bathroom this year. The kitchen had pots and pans galore, plenty of dishes and utensils for all of us, seasonings and cooking oils for our use, and even a lovely assortment of serving pieces so we could set out a dinner buffet. My husband loved grilling outside by the pond. My mom (the only Auburn Tiger in a family of Aggies) was tickled by all of the Auburn touches around the house, and that just added to our enjoyment of our visit. We loved every moment of our stay, and we would absolutely stay at Powledge House again!

Great Family Football Weekend!

I struggled with weather or not to write this review. This place is fabulous and I really wanted to keep it my little secret! Everything about the Powledge House is so well thought out. The owners have provided everything you could possibly need. Amy responded immediately to any questions we had about the property and was very accommodating. If you are not happy staying at this property you would not be happy anywhere. Kitchen is well equipped, and the outdoor area is perfect for relaxing with family and friends. Perfect family trip! I only wish we could have stayed longer. Look forward to staying again. Definitely recommend.

Charming Cottage - Perfect for a quick get away

We loved everything about this place. We stayed for 3 nights for an Auburn Football Game/Family weekend. Easy to get to, only 15 mins (6 miles) from Campus. 5 mins (3 miles) to drugstore/grocery store. Kitchen has all the appliances/cooking/dishware you would have at home. The bathrooms are updated, the beds very comfortable, and the house is tastefully decorated with quality furnishings. We especially enjoyed the hammocks in the afternoons for napping and the gazebo by the pond for our morning coffee. There is also a firepit but we did not find time to use it. The outside is as well maintained and inviting as the inside of the home. The host was very responsive making sure we arrived, providing suggestions for local restaurants and check out was a breeze. I would highly recommend staying here.
