Like a park

Wonderful location, the key deer made it super special with just a short drive to all that the lower keys offer. The house was perfect.everything was clean and up to date.we did not need a thing.thank you so much for letting us use your park access card, that alone saved US a lot. .

Wonderful rental, excellent service, highly recommend

Our second stay in the Florida keys, but our first in Big Pine Key at this rental. The rental was comfortable, well furnished (we cooked and baked a lot and were pleasantly surprised with all the supplies available.). The rental had a nice wrap around porch with a view of the canal and frequent visitors of Key deer. But Leo (the owner) really took care of us-- the last group who stayed at the rental lost the guest pass to Bahia Honda State Park (our absolute favorite part of the keys) but Leo has reimbursed us the entry fees for all the days we visited. We most highly recommend the rental on Big Pine Key and hope that we stay here again soon!

perfect in every way!

Like to start by thanking the owners (Leo & Diana) for being wonderful hosts and allowing us to enjoy their beautiful home. Located in a quiet setting that's close to all the best the lower keys has to offer, a short drive to key west and just down the road (us1) from one of the nicest beaches in the country Bahia Honda's sand spur beach! The home offered every comfort you could ask for and it's very clean and inviting. We have been renting vacation homes in the lower keys several times a year for over 15 years and this was one of our best stays. Don't forget to try the pizza @ no name pub while enjoying your stay (it's great). To Leo & Diana, THANKS AGAIN!!

Centrally located for all we wanted to do!

House was perfect; was as described; very comfortable and clean. Took several walks around the "Deer Park" area; loved watching the upside-down Jellies in the canal; had a fresh coconut and would have had more, but too hard to open for novices! Went to No Name Pub for dinner and had a ball, snorkeling at Bahia Honda State Park (perfect place for my Granddaughter to learn how to snorkel); went on a cruise to Dry Tortugas/Fort Jefferson and did more snorkeling, and spent a day at the Dolphin Research Center on Grassy Key (which I am a member of); my Granddaughter swam with the Dolphins and I played with them; what a magical experience. We want to thank Leo and Diane for their great hospitality and the use of their Winn-Dixie and State Park cards. We will be telling all our friends about our trip and, if we ever head back that way, we will again stay at Captain D's Hideout!

picture perfect

The pictures of this place don't do it justice. Leo and Diana, our hosts, keep this place very well maintained and sparkling clean. The key deer are everywhere and we saw them almost every night in the back and the front yard. This was the perfect place for our group to relax or if we wanted to go to key west that was only a 45 min (beautiful) drive. Free wifi let us map out places to go and things to do (fury ultimate adventure in Key West was fun). The grocery store was close to the house so we cooked in the kitchen a few times. Little geckos and frogs were around the porch and docks which we enjoyed watching as we slipped into the canal with the canoe and paddled towards the ocean. Bahia Honda beach which was only a few minutes away, was beautiful. Overall a great value, worth more than we paid. Big Pine Key was a perfect jumping off point for exploring the lower and middle keys. Perfect hub and great vacation.

Vermonters loved February on Big Pine Key!

The property was consistent with the description and the great reviews. Very clean and well appointed. We brought bikes, Kayaks and a 14 foot Jon boat which were all good choices. The waters are shallow, but with charts there are plenty of awesome places to explore, we enjoyed going right out of the canal following the markers to get in the channel between big pine and Howe. The palm shrouded back deck is very quiet and relaxing, we ended each day here. Happy hours are fun and cheap, our favorite was KiKi's sand bar on Little Torch, but the Bistro and Springers on Big Pine were also good. A short walk to the West end of the Island where the neighborhood has a common area offers a great sunset each evening and a chance to chat with other visitors and residents. We went out reef fishing with Captain Markus Hot Rod Charters on Big Pine and caught 18 great Yellow Tail Snapper, several over 5 pounds. We appreciated the full service cable and DVR, we did movie nights frequently. The Keys are so laid back and the people are extremely friendly, definitely a great place to go and unwind. Thanks Leo, you have a great place!

Wonderful home close to nature!

We really loved our stay at this unique property. The house was just as good as presented on the description and better! The home itself was well equipped with everything we needed for our stay including plenty of dishes in the kitchen for home cooked meals. We also loved that we had the option to grill or cook indoors depending on what we preferred that day. The bathrooms were well appointed and the beds were comfortable with plenty of storage for luggage and clothing. We loved having the DVR for recording a new episode of Game of Thrones while we were out one day and the WIFI was also nice. The wrap around porch was great- I loved watching the wildlife and napping on the breezy hammock. Even though the house was great my favorite part about this property is its location and the outdoor features. We brought our kayaks and this location was ideal for heading out for fishing and paddling. The steps at the dock made it easy to get the kayaks down although one should be prepared to be able to lift the kayaks in and out of the water as there is no ramp. There was a boat lift that looked nice, although we did not use it. I also really enjoyed the outdoor shower and the fish cleaning station. While we did not take advantage of the outdoor cooler for bait and fish, it was a nice touch for a fisherman. We went kayaking almost every day from the canal and caught tons of barracuda, snapper and even a four foot long shark! We also paddled out several times just to watch the sunset. Our favorite part of this home was the location in the National Key Deer refuge. Although I had been to the Keys several times over the years, I had never had the chance to see a Key deer. Not a problem at this house! The deer were all over the backyard, front yard and all around the neighborhood. It was nice to have them walk right up to use as were sitting on the lower level porch. We were also careful to observe state and federal laws regarding the deer, no feeding and following the speed limits. We also saw lots of adorable spotted babies! The location of this home is ideal, it is off the beaten path and close to nature but also close to several attractions and of course Key West. Bahia Honda was only a short drive and we also loved driving up to Marathon to go the turtle hospital and Crane House. Key West was a short drive but after dealing with the noise and parking issues were glad to come back to the peace and quiet of Big Pine. The owners were great and we would stay here again!

Quiet property

We had a relaxing stay at this property. The area is quiet and peaceful. Leo is very responsive and helpful with questions and requests. We enjoyed launching our kayaks from the backyard and seeing the key deer that would visit daily. The location was convenient for day trips to both the key largo and key west ends of the islands.

What a great place

The two most important things: The property was very clean and the beds were great. We stayed here five years ago and the property was just as nice then as it was before. Absolutely love the location, right next to the Key Deer Preserve, with many deer visitors stopping by to make our day; they are just so beautiful. This is a very quiet neighborhood and we enjoyed sitting outside by the canal in the evenings marveling at the stars, which I never see at home. The property owner was very responsive and easy to deal with. The kitchen was very well stocked with more frying pans than I've ever seen in any rental and many incidentals. Alas, that did not include a mixer, but since I knew the kitchen was well stocked, I didn't even ask and I should have. We love this place and will come back again (and probably again).

A great stay at Captain's D's Hideout

We had another wonderful time on Big Pine. This was our tenth trip to the area. The weather was near perfect, the house was well suited to our needs--we were four adults--even the fish were obliging, working out of kayaks out along Howe, Cutoe and Annette Keys. We would stay here again in a heart beat and are now trying to find time to do so.

Captain D’s hideout is a great away from the city vacation.

The house is very quiet cozy, comfortable and clean. The kitchen is well stocked with dishes and appliances making it very easy and pleasant to cook there. It is in a great location away from the hustle and bustle of city life. We enjoyed having our boat in the backyard for daily ocean excursions.

Off the beaten path and beautiful

Captain D’s has everything you need to have an enjoyable and memorable stay in the lower Keys. The place was immaculate when we arrived and I think the area (natural areas) in general is well on its way to recovering from Irma. The Key Deer are plentiful and are roaming the property daily. My only negative is that it is now a 28 day minimum stay which puts me out for ever being able to stay here again until we are retired! It’s a shame because this place is great!

We keep coming back!

We have stayed at this property a few times in the past year and after many years of vacationing in different parts of the Keys, I think we have found our favorite spot. The house is quite comfortable, is located in a very quiet neighborhood at the north end of Big Pine Key and is absolutely perfect for us. We enjoy the Key Deer that wander through the yard and the fact that we can launch our kayak right from the dock at the backyard. It's also far enough away from much of the light pollution that star gazing is fabulous! We usually have our bicycles with us and it's an easy ride to the Blue Hole and a nature trail. Big Pine Key also has many trails in the Key Deer Refuge that you can hike or bike on. Having the Winn Dixie / CVS / Walgreen's only 5 miles away is also a bonus! Leo, the owner, has been wonderful to work with; he responds promptly to messages and goes out of his way to make sure we have everything we need during our stay. Hands down this is our favorite place to stay and we will definitely keep coming back!

House was very clean, cool, comfortable, surrounded by nature

We were at the house the first two weeks of July. We arrived with our boat, scuba equipment and paddle boards. It was so perfect for all our water sports. It was a short boat ride to either the Atlantic or Gulf. Paddle boarding was amazing from this location. Each day I paddled into the Gulf and felt like I was in an episode of the National Geographic. There are so many pretty birds, deer, fish, stingrays and lots of baby sharks to see on a paddle. Big Pine Key is a rural non touristy location. By boat we went to Picnic Island several times to see the sunset and swim at the sandbar. We look forward to staying at this house again really soon.

Beautifully Decorated and Close to Everything :)

This was a lovely property and the decorating was gorgeous. The porch was open and inviting and the family loved to sit up there and watch the key deer and look out at the canal. We brought some kayaks with us and were able to take the kayaks out on the canal. It's a very short ride to the channel. We even kayaked to a small island! We loved all the wildlife--the deer and lizards--that surrounded the property. We also loved the short drive to Bahia Honda State Park for snorkeling and to Key West for some exciting night life and shopping. We had such a fun time and highly recommend Captain D's Hideout.

Very clean and well maintained. Kitchen has everything you need.

This is our second year staying here and we just love it. It is soo quiet and peaceful, but only 5min to the nearest shopping center. We bring our boat and can easily get to the contents for fishing, swimming, and diving for lobster, or we can go to Looe Key for even better diving! The owner is very responsive and very helpful. Big Pine is close enough to so many unique places to visit but without the large amounts of people that visit the Keys during the winter months. The owner keeps the house updated, clean, and well stocked. The bait freezer is a great thing to have if you like to fish. Our favorite place to hang out with friends is the back porch....we started everyday out there with coffee and ended each day with drinks and great conversations. Love this place and will be back next year! 😊

Why they chose this property

We like to think of this house and its location as "fancy camping". You are right in the middle of a deer preserve. There is actually a wooded area right across the street.

What makes this property unique

The house is located on the northern most tip of Big Pine Key. It is remote enough to be surrounded by uninhabited islands that are just a short boat ride or kayak away. Despite that, shopping and groceries are just a short drive from the house.
