Come enjoy your stay in our Historic "Beach Box" across the street from the beach. This 2 bedroom 1 bath cottage is just steps away from a very exclusive and beautiful beach. We have central heat/air, washer/dryer, High Speed Wifi, Smart 65" TV and plenty of off street parking.
We are up and running and are available throughout the off season with new low offseason rates. Longer term stays are available.
Our beautiful little cottage is fully furnished and stocked. It features two queen pillow top beds and two twins. We have a full size kitchen with all that's needed to cook a full Christmas Dinner!
We hope you will love the original wood plank walls and ceilings. This is the way they built these original cottages years ago. Even the cabinets are built from the same wood and by the same carpenters. A very Historic Outer Banks Beach Cottage. This beach cottage can be described as Rustic. We are making improvements to our new addition and you may notice a few minor imperfections. We hope you will love the fabulous location as we are focused on providing a clean and comfortable respite for you and your family.
Even with a thorough modernization the property is a historical home that is now over 85 years old. It has some eccentricities that reflect building standards and designs from the turn of the last century that lends to its charm as an older beach cottage. But even so, we hope that you will love our older and charming home.

First time to OBX
Kathleen was super responsive and great at communicating. The location is amazing, about 50 yards from the sand dune, up over and you are at the beach! The rate we were charged was in my judgement misleading. I have used VRBO numerous times before, and have never been “had” for extra fees like this one! I am sure we could have gotten significantly nicer accommodations for what we paid. The Pirate’s Lair has plenty of character and charm, and is also a bit run down. No doors closed in the house, bathroom was “honor system.” Roof leaked during crazy wind and rain and we had to use a towel to keep water from coming in under the door. All the appliances worked great especially helpful was the washer/dryer. Kitchen was equipped enough, we had six total so cannot hold that against them. It was nice to have access to Netflix and Prime on the big screen. I was SUPER frustrated with the property manager when I asked to have later check, she was going to charge us $75 extra, when I balked, she said how about $45. That is what I mean! I said we will leave at contracted time. We were ripped off on extra fees and she tried to screw us again for a later check out. NOT the way you treat people and get any repeat business, recommendations or positive reviews!
Exactly as advertised. Simple, no-frills, pet friendly beach house in a very nice neighborhood. When we arrived the water had been turned off (for the winter?). We messaged the host and she had the water co there in 30 mins! Great host, very responsive. Big TV. Stack W/D is great to have. Everything works. We spent 5 nights and would stay there again for sure.

Not very pleased OK
The property was not well-maintained either inside or outside. I had to wipe everything down before we could use anything there were ants and roaches. Additionally the downstairs shower was growing its own set of plants it was not very pleasant at all. Would not recommend this property
Tiny cottage but caters to everything you need for a quick short breaks. It’s location was what nailed it for us. Though not on the beachside but it was only a few meters away from it. You can have a quick swim and back to rinse. Owner was very responsive and the whole check in and check out process was seamless. We had a great stay!

No response from manager; property in disrepair
I would like to start out by saying that you cannot beat the location of the property, the AC works great, and the appliances all were in working condition. But the place is in need of some repairs.
I grew up on the beaches of NJ and am perfectly happy with the beach cottages and understand this is a rental property. That being said, there were things that are easily fixed but we’re left in disrepair. There is a missing piece of carpet trip that leaves exposed tack board that was covered by a piece of rope, which constantly got stuck in door and exposed the tacks. None of the locks worked except on one closet. We fixed the lock to our bedroom because we didn’t think it would be nice to lock our son in the closet just to get some privacy (joking). The door to the outdoor shower came off and was just thrown on the side. Easy fix to just take a bungee cord and hang a shower curtain but we chose to give the neighbors a show (again joking). We went use a glass and there was still red wine in the glass that was put away, also dirty bowls with food particles.
We didn’t complain, we enjoyed our stay regardless. But what made me angry is that shortly after departing I sent a message to the manager concerning an item we left behind. She did not respond after to attempts at contacting. I get maybe item wasn’t located but returning a message is not much to ask. We did fix a broken lock after all.
The stay was great, and the property manager was very friendly. Everything was very clean, and it was a very cozy place to stay. It is in a wonderful location, right next to the beach.
If you imagined your grandparents retiring to a small spot by the beach you’ve got the right idea for this place. It’s a quaint spot within walking distance of the beach. We all really enjoyed it. The only improve I’d say is that none of the doors (including the bathroom) had working locks for their doors. So privacy won’t be a factor if you stay with multiple people.
I really liked the cottage. It was cute and quaint. I had total beach vibes the entire time. My dogs enjoyed it as well. I couldn’t believe how close to the beach was. And when it was time for check out, there was a public beach access right down the street, so we were able to park down there and still enjoy the beach.
Perfect location, close to everything, and a lot of places were able to deliver to the cottage. Owners responded quickly when messaged.
Pet friendly friendly place with a quiet neighborhood.
Only thing I wish was functional, was the gate at the tip of the steps so the dogs could walk around and not go down.
I will totally stay here again!
Great location, clean and the managers were friendly and helpful
Everything was great. The location is perfect. The place was clean. The only thing for me was that I arrived in Feb, so the place must have been vacant for a while. It was soooo cold the first day. Even with the heat cranked up. It was fine after that. If there is something I would suggest, is that for the off season rentals, maybe check on the place the day before, and turn the heat on. Other than that, Kathleen was very responsive to my questions, and overall helpful. I would stay there again in a heartbeat.

Need of Repairs and Over Priced
Property is in desperate need of repair.
- Fire alarms missing
- Heating did not keep up on the cold nights
- Shower head is duct taped together.
- Bathroom door does not latch closed (must hold with foot).
- Bedroom doors do not close.
- Gate at top of stairs is off hinges and set to the side.
Accommodations worked to stay out of rain, but wasn't very welcoming. Property manager answered questions promptly.
This little cottage by the sea is full of charm. We spent 2 nights here with our grandson. We ate in for several meals; enjoyed Netflix on the TV. The weather was super cold, so we didn't do much outside, but we did walk down to the beach just over the dune and picked up a few shells. It was a nice quick respite for our little family. Highly recommend it!
No wife, kids, dogs or cats - just me for the first time in 20 years. If you’re expecting The Four Seasons keep scrolling. If you want an exceptionally clean, accurately described beach cottage in a great location look no further. It’s about 300’ to the beach access; Under 3mi to Publix or Walmart; tons of restaurants close by. The house itself is small. Typical for the layout of that time, bedrooms and bathroom are small - if you are a big person (tall or wide) the shower will be a tight fit. Full kitchen (incl. microwave and enough stuff to cook a meal. LR seats 6 and had a 60”(?) Smart TV. Also a big plus was a covered porch running the length of the house. Enough space for 2, maybe a third car. If I had to list one complaint it would be the Internet doesn’t reach the west bedroom with any degree of reliability - worked well enough for me everywhere else. Communication was superlative - got replies within 10min without fail. Checkin/checkout was easy - lockbox on site. Bottom line? I would recommend without reservation and would certainly rent again.
Amazing location, cute cabin with basics. Charcoal grill, no microwave, if that’s a problem for you. We would stay again.

About the host
Hosted by Kathleen
Kathleen and I are very new to the hospitality business. We are so proud to share our little beach cottage with your family. The beach is wonderful here and I hope you will come and make lifetime memories here in our little Pirate's Quarters. It will be fully stocked, clean and comfortable - We will stock it with all bed linens, towels, paper towels and toilet paper - just bring your tooth brush!
Why they chose this property
This beach cottage is just across the street from the beach, in between the highways. The beach itself is very seldom populated with crowds. It's a great place to fish and surf or just relax and enjoy the beach and sun!
What makes this property unique
If you love the original architecture of the "Original OBX Beach Cottages" you will love our Pirate's Quarters. Perfectly constructed with moisture and insect resistant Birch Wood, these cottages are being lost to the large Modern Vacation Homes. This is one of the few remaining originals and we hope you will love the character and stress free living as it was intended here on the OBX.
