The view was incredible. The boat's lounge and library were a special bonus. Owners were neighborly,.and there was a wealth of info from owner emails and all the rooms. Place was immaculate.
I suggest adding the book Stern Men by Elizabeth Gilbert.
Came home to my Father's passing (as well as my son's passing in November). This was truly a healing place.
Many thanks for this wonderful opportunity!
A wonderful two weeks in Machiasport even though after 10 years, a moose has not been spotted. Our host could not have been more welcoming. I had seen the magazine featuring the property and it is just as
presented. I love Art Deco and vintage furniture. We went to Quoddy and Lubec, Cutler and Machias, some of our favorite destinations. Tom and our little terrier Rita walked a number of trails. The best part of all was enjoying the magnificent view and reading. I think Tom read at least 15 books. Thank you thank you.
Rich and Julia have thought everything through to make this a welcoming, aesthetically pleasing, comfortable home away from home. Not recommended for energetic toddlers, though! It is smallish, and you have to be gentle with the place. Plenty of info on-site for excursions, shopping, care of the house, plus good reading on local subjects. The location is a great step-off point for excursions up to Lubec and down to Ellsworth, although we focused mostly on the Bold Coast hikes, which are nearby. Dining nearby is sparse, so food shopping and meals deserve advance planning (or time to take up Rich’s many recommendations, and get to them).
We really appreciated that the dog was allowed, although the nearest place to let her off-leash was a 5-minute drive away.
Rich was a super-welcoming, responsive, and generous host. It was a unique place and a special stay.
Perfect Home Base From Which to Explore the Downeast Coast!
We had been looking forward to our trip for months, especially staying at The Dock House. The pictures accompanying the listing were so enticing - exactly our type of vacation home. As soon as we drove in the driveway, we knew we definitely would not be disappointed. Everything about the little house and the boat were even better than imagined. Clean, bright and very comfortable, not to mention delightfully quirky (in the best sense of the word). It was easy to feel at home. We spent our evenings sitting on the deck with Maine brewed beer, enjoying the view of the coastline. The late August evening light was magical. During the days, we explored the coast, both the towns (Eastport, Lubec, Machias and Cutler) as well as the many hiking trails in the area. The hiking is challenging, but the views are more than reward for the effort. Rich was a truly exceptional host, eager to give us restaurant advice and suggestions for how to spend our days and get the most out of this unique part of Maine. If you’re looking for a “beyond Acadia” experience, I strongly recommend the Bold Coast in general and The Dock House in particular. Both are special places and well worth the long drive from … well, from just about everywhere :). We’ll be back.
This property was beyond amazing. Rich was so helpful leading up to our trip and checked in with us daily while we were there if we needed anything or to give recommendations. The boat was such a fun place to play cards, read, watch a nautical themed movie and just relax. The main house had everything we would need. There were a few nights we stayed in just to enjoy the views and relax! It is a good location with anything you need right in town in Machias and easy drives to Lubec and Bar Harbor. Definitely recommend staying here if you have the chance!!
Truly unique and comfortable home with a beautiful view & close proximity to many nature preserves.
The view from the house is just lovely, and is situated in a part of the coast that is within easy driving distance to a multitude of nature preserves, and state parks. The house itself is furnished/decorated with a unique aesthetic, and great care and attention were given to every little detail. The kitchen is well stocked with everything you need when away from home. The fabulous book selection was also appreciated. Rich was a superb host.....excellent communicator, helpful, and available for any questions. The notebooks they have compiled for their guests, are loaded with articles and information of the area. I'm not kidding when I say they must have spent days, weeks, maybe months gathering it all. Highly recommended.
This is not just a house to rent but an exceptional experience. The house is remarkably thoughtfully designed and furnished, it's in a special location with ocean views, in a part of Maine where it is really hard to find such a special house but where you want to be one of the first to explore the area, the superhosts have knowledge of the area that goes back generations and there is nothing they enjoy more than sharing it, and they are there for you at a moments notice. Sound too good to be true? It's not....I repeat, it's an extraordinary experience and if you stay here you will never forget it. This is the standard that all rentals should strive for, and very few do.
Richard was an outstanding host. Not only did he quickly respond to questions, but he sent me several "things-to-do" before departing.
We had a relaxing stay with no surprises. Always a plus!!
Thanks Rich!!

Rich and Julie live in Providence, RI. Rich is a graphic designer/teacher and Julie is an architectural lighting designer. While we live in the city, we love to retreat to the Dockhouse to read, relax, enjoy the cottage's ocean views and its proximity to some of Maine's best hiking. We spend every other day taking day trips up and down the coast, eating, antiquing, and exploring the many wonderful working harbors and waterfronts.
