Perfect home away from home
I loved my stay at this place! Perfect location and super cozy! Plus, Mark has thought of everything a person could possibly need. The kitchen is well stocked. You can find every cleaning supply necessary. Even beach towels are there! A laundromat is walking distance. The apartment is drenched in sunlight and quiet. And Mark was super accommodating for the entire duration of my stay, often checking in with me and making sure I didn't need anything. I will definitely stay there again! Thank you for providing me with a perfect home away from home!

A peaceful treehouse/retreat!
This is by far the nicest VRBO experience I've ever had, and Mark is a super host who goes many extra miles; I do hope I can come back sometime! The place was completely comfortable in hot, sticky summer weather. I especially appreciated having a well-equipped kitchen so I could cook myself meals. Bathroom, bedroom all peaceful, comfortable, well-equipped. A delightful place!

We loved our charming central home.
We had such a great experience staying at Mark’s apartment. This listing is for the upstairs portion, which I thought would be a detractor, but ended up being fantastic. Something pleasant about walking up the almost treehouse-like staircase into your secluded pad above street level. Anyways, many positives here: 1) Location As second-time Austinites we wanted to see a new area (last time was near South Lamar). This central area ended up being perfect in so many respects. First, the neighborhood itself is wonderful. Many beautiful homes, tons of charm and lots of sidewalks and grassy park areas fit for a dog or picnic. It is also walkable to a ton of great restaurants and hip spots (co-op, coffee, outdoor beer hall, juiceland). Driving to Zilker Park was ~10 min which we tried to do nearly every day. And you’re also 15-20 min each way to either south Austin or north (domain). 2) The host Mark is a sweet guy. He was communicative from the start and welcomed us with a friendly phone call on our way in. He also made great local recommendations and offered assistance with anything that we needed. You can tell he cares. 3) Comfort The memory foam mattress is very comfortable, and the place has a cozy feel to it. It has all the essentials, and Roku TV was a nice touch. Mind you the kitchen is quaint so we weren’t cooking any extravagant meals. So much takeout nearby though. Also want to mention the hot water in the shower is solid. Like very good. There are a few things that could be updated, but I’m sure Mark’s aware. And to be fair the furniture is a little more dated, but it fits the space. That said, my partner and I both telecommuted for our month stay, and it worked just fine. All in all a great stay, and we would love to come back soon. Thanks again Mark!

Our favorite place to stay in Austin
This was our second time staying at this property and it was just as nice as the previous visit. Check in and communication were easy. The apartment was clean with lots of natural light. It was stocked with all of the kitchen items, bathroom items and linens that we needed. Parking was convenient. The bed was comfortable and the living room was great for relaxing. The location is convenient for us. We will look forward to staying here the next time we are in Austin!

Clean, Great Location, and Spacious
I stayed in the upstairs apartment. It is a very nice property right near the UT campus and other attractions. The property was very clean, it had a well stocked kitchen, ample seating areas, and a nice bedroom & bathroom. I would recommend staying here to anyone. I will offer two caveats to anyone staying here: 1. If you are a light sleeper or if non-ambient noise bothers you, then the place might not be for you. The walls are thin and you can hear most noises outside and from the apartment below you. It wasn't loud enough to bother me but for extremely light sleepers, it could be a problem. 2. The shower head is about 5'8'' from the floor of the tub. Being 6'0'' tall, it wasn't hard for me to duck down and get a nice shower, but for anyone 6'3'' or taller, it would be a bit of an inconvenience. Neither of these are deal breakers and Mark was a great host, as he was responsive but also gave you your privacy. He was very flexible about check-in / check-out and nice to converse with through text messages. The bed was comfortable and the apartment was much nicer than staying in a hotel room.

Charming in an OK kind of way
This place is definitely very Austin-y if that makes sense. So if you are someone who really doesn't mind a more low key way of vacationing then this place should be fine for you. But know that it is very old, has very stained carpets, old and very noisy window units (which thankfully did cool despite the noise), all the doors stick, and the deadbolt doesn't work on the front door. Also the neighbors across the street where you have to park do not mow their yard, so passengers be careful getting out because we found out the hard way the un-mowed yard is full of stinging nettle. Fairly cute place, just not our cup of tea.

Cute Apartment Near University of Texas
Very cute and clean vintage apartment! 2nd floor of a 2 unit building, with lots of vintage charm. Kitchen was well equipped and there was plenty of room. Very sunny, but with shutters to keep out the light when you want to sleep in. Parking was on the street, but always available. We enjoyed staying here!

Good location and amenities
Great walkable location for university and downtown - clean, bright, spacious, convenient to the co-op/grocery, well-equipped kitchen, plenty of room to spread out. We could invite friends and family to visit us (instead of just visiting them)

Great apartment in convenient location
We stayed 3 nights in the upper floor unit. The apartment has plenty of windows bringing in natural sunlight which is always a top criteria for us. Yet, was very private at the same time. The neighborhood is very peaceful and quiet with easy access to downtown and if you have business at UT, is within easy walking distance. Also due to its proximity to UT, there are quite a few nice restaurants and other amenities nearby. Next time we visit Austin, we will definitely stay in this location again.

About the host

Hosted by Mark Feist

Host profile image
The property owner has lived all over the world. He enjoys people of every color and ethnicity. He settled in Austin 18 years ago and knows the city very well. He has been known to have a glass of wine and share his local knowledge on occasion.

Why they chose this property

This property is in Aldridge Place between the university and Hyde Park. It was Austin's first planned development with many of the homes designated as historic. One of the most notable features is Adams / Hemphill Park that runs through it's center. The history of Adams-Hemphill Park dates to 1912, when Lewis Hancock (1856-1920) donated more than two acres along Hemphill Creek for use as a park. Hancock, who served as mayor of Austin from 1895-1897, was an influential figure at the turn of the twentieth century. Developer of the Austin Country Club and the namesake of Hancock Center, Lewis Hancock donated the land for Hemphill Park when he began selling tracts of land in the Aldridge Place neighborhood in 1912.

What makes this property unique

The apartment has been restored to it's original state other than the addition of new carpet, electricity, and plumbing. It has all the original built ins, windows, kitchen and bath tile. This neighborhood enclave is unique in Austin and a pleasure to explore while strolling the park.
